"With autumn closing in." Wow. That one line adds a whole dimension to this song, which is otherwise about carefree teenage horniness. But that line is a cold-water reminder that those times don't last forever.

He writes such descriptive lyrics, poetic really. " I woke last night to the sound of thunder , how far off I sat and wondered. started humming a song from 1962 , ain't it funny how the night moves , when you don't seem you have as much to lose , strange how the night moves , with autumn closing in" . "I woke up last night to the sound of thunder. How far off I sat and wondered. Started humming a song from 1962" This to me is the pinnacle of the song. I love that it is so quiet talking about....thunder. I also love that the thunder is suggested to be as far off as "1962". The distance is almost palpable yet somehow reachable.

Simply one of the greatest songs ever written. I am 56 years old and this reminds me of my early thru late teenage years. It reminds me of the summers and falls as I grew up. Makes me very melancholy.

Totally agree. Just a spectacular song. No one tells a story like Bob. It's a shame "Like a Rock" was sold and run into the ground by Chevy. It's a masterpiece in being a teenager and early 20-womething.

My dad actually said when Bob broke down to the speaking part , " Nice how he did that. " my Dad was not a rock-pop guy so it floored me he was even listening. A quiet military officer who let us control the station selection in the car. A good dad, indeed. Missing him since 1995. One of Bob's personal favorites...He and 2 other musicians recorded this song in Toronto,Canada after the rest of the band had gone home..He played the acoustic guitar and piano, the drummer, and the bass player all wrote the music to lyrics he had been writing for months. The producer brought in the background singers from Montreal the next day, and it was a huge hit. Wound up being the title of the album...🔥🔥🔥

Over half a century ago, and I can still see the glow of daahlights shining across a beautifully sordid scene, while the AM radio filled the cab of Dad's 47 Ford pickup. Her name was Donna, and she smelled of honeysuckle. Our tryst was more primal than love, it was the Unexplored Country where youth is always aiming. But somewhere along life's path, the colors faded, and the heat slacked with jaded time. Then one day someone said "You look good for your age" and they frown at your tears. They never see that it's not yourself you're teared up over, but for the boy who couldn't hold the rainbow.
