One of the best-written songs of all time. Anyone who has had some struggles, done some drifting, messed up a good thing with a good woman- or just had a wild one we couldn’t hold onto- and those of us who have made some bad choices will attest to how well this song is written.

I remember when I was 14, back in Madrid, Spain (my hometown), and the English teacher played this song for us. We used the lyrics to learn English. I learnt life. "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." Seger wrestled with and stressed over that lyric. He asked a friend if it was any good, and whether or not it belonged in the song. He thought it was bad grammar. However, his friend said, "Who cares? It's the best line in the song!" So Bob kept it.

Indeed, my friend. So many things learned over 63 years that I wish I never had to know: the man I loved and later married turned out to be a major disappointment, beloved friends and family lost to time, distance and death, loss of a sense of freedom to obligations and responsibilities, the end of innocence, rapidly approaching sunset of life and so many more.

Minutes after the birth of my first son I was with him when they took him to get washed and cleaned off. I was at a little nurses station when they handed him too me, it had been a long and difficult day for him and his mom. As I sat there holding my little man this song comes playing out the little boom box. I asked the nurse to turn it up a little and at 3am this is the first song my boy ever heard. I’m not perfect now, but I was far from it back then. I’ll never forget that few minutes as long as I live. Trying to have fair and following winds now and days.

"Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" There are things that we experience in life that mold our personas, some for the better, some for the worse. The cumulative impact of those "life experiences" make us what we are as we move through time. Whether it's a person, a breakup, an accident, a death or one of the many life events we are never the person we were when we were starry eyed, naive and young.

I was listening to Bob Seger on Alexa earlier this week ...I had been listening for over an hour and my nephew (21yrs old) came out of his bedroom and said .."you're listening to Bob?" ... I said "Yep"....about half an hour later I yelled at Alexa...."Alexa...stop!!...I'm done rememberin'".....My nephew came home last night and said...Bob Seger came on his car radio when he was coming home from work...and he was laughing to himself about His Aunt Bridget being "done with rememberin'"

"With the radio playing low". Remember the days when we had the radio on in the bedroom, the radio on in the kitchen, in the car. Miss that....among other things. Burnt that youth up at both ends - that's what Bob's song reminds me of.
@donaldgilbreath42004 жыл бұрын
The line, " I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." Bob Seger didn't want in the song. He felt it was out of place. But the band insisted on it. Turned out to be the key line of the song and probably the one most quoted of his catalogue.

I love Main Street. Did ever since the first time I heard it. The melody and the sax and the rhyming, everything about it is beautiful. But, once I started to really think about the lyrics, I realized its a song about a guy who's acting much like a stalker, which is pretty creepy.

Ah, man! You keep bringing up these songs - the music that shaped our lives. People who wonder why we boomers are so, so disappointed with the last few decades of this current musical wasteland have never spent the time to really listen to the music from our youth. Thank you for listening and reacting to this. It truly was a golden time for music. The best part of it was, songs like these weren't something that happened once or twice a year the way it is now. This type of song; the incredible musical arrangements, the storytelling, the poetry inherent in the lyrics, the truth at the core - that was the standard. Every week there would be a song just as good, just as profound and heartfelt as this one. God, I miss it.

@grubby1244 жыл бұрын
@@axfn93 It truly was. It was a golden time for music, from the mid-sixties up to the eighties. Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Cream, The Beatles, The Who, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Simon and Garfunkel, Santana, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, too many more to name. All of them musical icons, with lyrics that rolled off the tongue like fine wines and music that cut straight to the heart They spoke the truth of the times. They all filled stadiums and fields as far as the eye could see. Simon and Garfunkel's final concert drew a crowd estimated at 500,000 people. Two people, one guitar, holding half a million people in the palm of their hands as they performed one hit song after another for over two hours. The Beatles on-line performance of 'Let It Be' was listened to by one and a half billion people all over the world. I doubt we'll ever see a time like that again. Sorry you missed it.

Bob Seger has an indirect hand in Purple Rain. Back before the Album/Movie, Prince was on tour with them crossing paths and attending each other's shows across 15-20 cities, so was watching him play several dates. Prince was moved with his way of telling a story in a 3-4 minute song, something that shaped how he wrote Purple Rain to tell a story like no previous Prince song had done.

The storytelling hits hard in his songs. "Hollywood Nights" and this song are two of my all-time favorites. So vivid is the picture of a young man running against the wind as many of us have, then seeking shelter from the opposing wind during possibly middle age when the pounding from fighting invisible opponents begins to take its toll. An older man then adjusts to his age and environment but in many ways is still that young man running against the wind. Beautiful song.
