Peter won 19 awards for sledgehammer video and he swept at the Grammys. He filmed much of it under glass for about 21 hours to film it. He's a musical genius. 👍👏

No CGI, No green screen, this was filmed. With a camera. Frame by frame, and his lips had to sync with the music the whole way through, this is next level dedication. I remember being blown away when this came out.

This video, when it came out, was so groundbreaking. Nobody had seen anything like it, because it was filmed and was basically stop-motion. MTV was like five years old and Peter Gabriel immediately elevated the art of the music video with Sledgehammer. He's still an amazing performer and creator. He's just amazing.

Unfortunately, in modern times people more more have accepted and got too accustomed to mediocrity and lack of originality, it is almost an expectation now. I am a musician and when I learn songs from pre-early 2000's back to the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and on, there was so much variety and creativity and talent. Now one can learn 4 chords and know about 90% of the music today. Same chords, same progressions, same generic melodies, same boring song structures, the only difference between songs is the key it is in and the type of singing voice.

I don't think any of us realized just how special a time we were living in at the time. Those first 3-4 years on MTV was one of the most creative periods ever. You had a brand new format and artists were trying EVERYTHING. Every week there was something brand new, never seen before. I would come home from school in 8th grade, turn on MTV and it would stay on all evening until I went to bed. The 5 VJ's were like friends. The next day at school were would talk about any new videos that debuted the night before. We just took for granted it would always be that way.

I think the internet is making everyone the same. In the old days things happened in little pockets. there were different 'scenes' in every big town across the UK and sometimes even in different parts of London. people aren't so cut off like they used to be which allowed trends, accents and slang to develop more autonomously
@lucidloon4 жыл бұрын
Fuck that. Plenty of people still have the passion. Record companies just aren't as willing to take a chance on the outliers anymore.

Paul and Jamal......So profound. The deal is.... is now you have the option to be lazy and not really learn how to play an instrument anymore. Bands like three dog night, Chicago, Doobie Brothers and so many more were playing every instrument. I don't expect everybody to understand the difficulty lvl these band had mastered from years of hard work and practice, until you do it yourself. Those songs from the bands that I listed above are so difficult it is unbelievable. 💝😇🎼🎶

Great song, one of the most iconic songs not just of the 80’s but in pop music history. I would like to add that when people say they don’t make music like this anymore, you have to remember we’re listening to the best of the best. There was plenty of crap made back in the day as well (and that applies to whenever “back in the day” is for you). And so in another couple of decades we’ll be listening to the top, massive, hits of today and saying the same thing (“Uptown Funk”, anyone?). There’ll always be great music. Thanks, Jamal, for bringing the older stuff back for those of us who remember when it was new and for those of you for whom it’s new now.

Are you kidding Peter Gabriel let loose on MTV, I'm sure they had to keep him restrained. This is such a direct extension of all his stage acts from His past live performances.

I went to the Atlanta secret world show. It wasn't an original tour date. The show was added to the tour after an overwhelming letter writing campaign demanding an atlanta show. That arena was electric that night. Top 5 live music experiences for me.

Vincent Schmitt their most pop albums are Little Creatures and True Stories, the earlier albuns are more experimental. The last one, Naked, is practically a world music album. Regarding videos, I recommend “Nothing but flowers”, “Once in a lifetime”, “And she was”, “Love for sale”, everything from the live album “Stop making sense”, mainly “Psycho Killer”. And, last but not least, “Wild wild life”, that contains scenes from David Byrne’s movie: “True Stories”.
