A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.
I'd recently been inspired by the emergence of so many great live performances on the Moog semi-modular units, thanks in part to the "Moog Sound Studio" bundles now being sold. While most of my favourite tracks were ambient (see AB85's amazing stuff on KZfaq if you haven't already!), I can't help myself. This ended up being a fun groove that I just wanted to bring over the top.
To help, I used the Zoia Euroburo for reverb on the Subharmonicon and Mother 32. I had originally thought I'd use the Euroburo as a modulator as well, but I was happy with the sound and did relatively little patching. Maybe in the future! In any case, the Euroburo did a great job on creating some space for the synth sounds in this track; its "Reverb Lite" algorithm is supposed to be a CPU-friendly alternative, but I find it just sounds pretty great in general.
For the DFAMs, I wanted something to leverage their weirdness and wildness. So for the kick sounds, I used the Valco KGB Fuzz (to get it buzzy and wild and droning at the end) and the UA FX Starlight (to add some energy and stereo space in the finale). And for the cymbal sounds, I added the Erica Synths Zen Delay, which is such an amazing and performative effects pedal, and it became another instrument in its own right.
Overall, this track is a great reminder that good analog boxes can get you 90% of the way there. I love how these semi-modulars sound.
