In this episode I sleep in my new tent for the first time. It's turned out better than I could have imagined. There's still a lot of work I need to do on it, but for now, I am so happy with what I've accomplished.
--
Where do I live?
Northern Canada.
How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the KZfaq training (watching) over the years.
What gear do I use?
Canon 80D camera
Rode videomicro
Sigma Art 18-35
Canon 1.8 50mm stm
Canon 18-55mm stm
Canon 10-18mm stm
A cheap 15 yr old tripod
I do not live at the tent. I just visit whenever I can.

Hey Jay i work in construction! There is a very easy way to make your tent very rigid and sturdy! Add pieces of 2x4 halfway down horizontally on your rafters, about 6" above your head! You will be amazed at the difference it's going to make!

Always put up a tent with the zipper closed. 30 years in the Canadian military with multiple arctic deployments. If you forget this rule, a thick flannel/wool blanket over the door will suffice at keeping the wind out/heat in. Good job though, really enjoying the progress.

I wonder if placing a sheet of metal (the kind you can get at a big box store) under the stove, then bending it up, so it is between the tent wall and the stove could also act as a reflector and conserve some heat. Or maybe it could be attached to the stud wall. Just a thought.

You need to get a fan on the stove to move the heat around to tent. This way it circulates to cold air towards the stove and moves the warm air out from the stove,

We use a 14x16 wall tent for our hunting camp in the Adirondack mountains, same tent for 50+ years . What we did was built 2’ high walls of 2x2 ‘s and metal roofing . Took 2 flat concrete blocks one at east end got steel pipe and made ridge pole with screw together parts and feet. Then we put tent up and built like horse railing on both sides to tie sides to , once we had tent where we wanted it then we built 2x4 frame and peek fasten tent to walls on outside with hooks and tent grommets horse rails cemented in and eves tied to that . Took steel ridge pole out and shorten it up for fly to make cover porch . Stove is a barrel stove laid down so can put long wood in and up to 10” in diameter,we can load it up and lasts all night if needed but there is always someone up and checks it . Bunk beds can sleep 8 people, cook stove is top part of apartment stove , table, milk crates for chairs , nice saw dust ( planer shaving’s ) for floor
@shackman9566
@shackman9566 4 жыл бұрын
Use some logs to build a bunk bed to put yourself up were the heat is. Build it stout the logs will absorb heat and then give back to the air as the air temperature falls. It's called thermal mass. Anything you add table or chair can be made with logs even a stack of bricks or blocks between the stove and the tent wall will heat up when the stove is hot and then give back the heat as the air temperature falls. Ultimately insulation in the walls and ceiling would roast you out of there. But adding framing such as log timbers to the frame will definitely add strength and thermal mass. I sure wish I could pitch my eureka Summit tent nearby and give you some schooling on timber framing. Have a wonderful day and thanks again Jay.

Love the oven. Still think you need cables to tie the walls together. The cables will prevent the walls from going out under snow load and you can use the cables like clothes line.

You need to leave that "temporary" 2x4 in the middle of the tent, two of them. To hold the ridge pole in position, especially under snow load. Trust me I've pitched canvas tents a thousand times over decades. In 40 mph winds, driving sleet; lost tents in tornadoes. And put some wind lines over it, or you will be sorry. To keep warm in those Temps you need a double wall tent, add a second layer of canvas inside those 2x4's.

Another great video my friend! Keep em coming as I can only play so many games! I love the plywood on the sides...super move as I did the same type of thing. On the front door, I used plywood on both sides and left a 40” opening in the middle. I then took another piece of plywood 50” long and put on a handle on the middle part and created a slider. I kept in place by putting 2/4 on floor for a trac and then just added hooks at the top on both sides. The overlap was 5” each side! Stay Safe! Stay Healthy!

For the front of tent cut some plywood at 24" get some hinges and make braces to slide over ends. Brace is 2x4 ( 2 pieces) with plywood strip in middle. Stand the board up slip it on. Or no hinges and more braces. Ounce built stores in corner. 24" so you can use only need one sheet.

Hello and Good Day Jay ☺☕ nice work on your tent ... I've been showing your show to some of my friends and we all are in agreement with what your doing ..... and we think you should continue building it till it's a Cabin .... add more 2x4 s on all walls till you have 16 in centers so you can install insulation as well as finishing the walls and roof with with plywood and adding more rafters ..... soon your tent will become a true cabin .... with this type of framing you will be able to put cabinets in as well ..... have fun Brother and keep up the good work .... for you to have done this in such extreme weather speaks Volumes of the man you are .☺☕🏆

A few simple things could improve things quite a bit. 1) Add a thermal fan to your oven. It will circulate the heat inside the tent and it uses no power. 2) Add a reflector behind your oven. You could even see some improvement with a simple space blanket! 3) Add some thermal mass to your oven. Get a few bits of flat steel and some brackets, and you can make a rack that can hold some bricks along the sides of the oven. 4) Fasten the bottom of the tent to the frame/platting. 5) Get some cheap insulation (anything is better than nothing). Put it on the roof and walls and put some cheap canvas on the inside. 6) You don't really need the full width opening in the front. Make some more framing on both sides of the opening, leaving a door in the middle. You can of course also make a simple door on the inside of the tent. This will both make your frame more solid and avoid the heat leaking out! 7) Bring a lot of wood and cut it up next time you are going to the tent. In the future you should have a large stack ready to go for any visits, as it can be deadly if you have to gather firewood in an emergency.

Loving the progress so far. It’s really coming along. Here’s a thought for your doorway, use the folding door method that you can lock into place on a night and fold it away to the sides during the day. Basically like a room divider. It would keep the cold out from the bottom of the doorway. Also attaching it to the frame would be good. Keep up the good work

First off the tent looks GREAT! Secondly, I've been baking in the Coleman oven for probably 25 years. I love it. I've looked to see if there is anything better out on the market and have never found anything better. I put two fire bricks on the bottom to hold heat in. One mod I made to mine 2 years ago was I bought a fairly cheap welding blanket and drape it over three sides of the oven to get more even heating. I'd highly recommend the fire brick or a small pizza stone, the blanket was because I've used my oven so much it just wasn't tight anymore. Please post anything else you bake. I've enjoyed going on this journey with you while sitting in front my wood burning stove!😊

4x8 sheets of foil backed foam on the ceiling would go a long way to keeping heat in and wood consumption down. I know in an earlier video you said you weren't allowed a hard roof. If that's a concern with foil backed foam, then the foil bubble sheets may be a better option.

That's pretty strong coffee you're making - gave me chills ... your tent frame is crooked - one side bigger than the other so off sided. If you put it too high, you'll have opening around the tent at the bottom & will let cold air in at night ... don't make it quite as high & you'll have a little to turn under at the bottom to keep cold air out ... if there still is snow, put it on top of the excess to hold it down & keep the cold air out.

What happened to the tent in a tent idea ? Like I said I must have missed something here . What ever you're doing it looks good . The plywood will certainly sturdy up that frame . Get a bigger propane tank . Those small bottles are very expensive . Good for a backup if the bigger tank is empty .

Those temps are extreme, you need to partition off half the inside of the tent for nite time sleeping purposes. It will stay warm while you sleep that way and in the day you can roll it up out of the way. That's a lot of square feet to heat up in a large tent in those temps. Get you sum extra canvas or a tarp to divide the tent in half inside.

Love the tent! We have the same one 12x14, staying in it while we build in Northern Vermont. Gotta keep the fire hot or it gets cold real quick!
