THREE DAYS IN THE FROZEN CABIN

I spent 3 days in my cabin. This is the first time ever here in winter. It's very beautiful, but I have lots of work to do. I have to slowly fix this place up, expand it, and make it my own. I purchased this cabin with my girlfriend in the summer of 2023. Our plane is to really spiff it up over time. In this video, I am installing the permanent woodstove, taking in the northern lights, eating amazing food, and going for rides on my snowmobile.

As someone who has been a subscriber from the early beginning, I can agree the wall tent videos are the core of your channel. This channel has that "je ne sais quoi" surrounding it. The extreme temperatures, the snow, the woodstoves for heat, the fresh cooked meals. The all around survival. It's amazing to see how far you've grown. Not only as a channel, but in experience and expertise in these environments. As the channel matured, the addition of the RBM tents and the cabin have a been a welcome sight, as it allows us to see more of what made this channel what it is today. Even your spring and summer travels to the wall tent are fantastic. Keep on doing what you're doing Jay. I think I speak for most of the fans and subscribers that we'll continue to watch and look forward to new videos.

Just a small suggestion. When frying potatoes, the stove doesn’t get the grease hot enough and the potatoes really soak it up. I recommend a portable propane camp stove. It heats the oil faster and more evenly so the potatoes are crisp and not overly greasy. Unless, of course, you prefer them over the stove.

HI Jay, enjoyed how you survive in the really cold. I have a off grid cabin north of Williams, AZ, 45 miles south of the Grand Canyon. It gets to single digits,F°& 60 mph+ winds at times. So what your sharing, I've been there also, just not as cold weather that you have . Be safe & warm.🤠

@@jaylegere suggestion, improve heating, on wall behind, to side of wood stove, get some 30 inch by 48 inchwide CORRUGATED galv steel, like used on roofs, with the corrugation running the 4 foot direction, then space panel 3/4 inch off wall, holding about 1 1/2 inches of floor...and attach. The Steel as the stove heats it, will create a natural draw off floor, sending warm air up...creating an efficient natural circulation and staple some mylar to your ceiling, that will help dramatically, help with cooling in summer too

*1. EcoFlow Delta Pro 3.6 kW Solar Generator. 2. 4 x 400 Watt Solar Panels for your Roof Deck. 3. EcoFlow Smart Propane or Gasoline Generator. The Propane genny is plugged into the side of the Delta Pro and only comes on if the charge falls below the percentage of the internal battery which you can set. Normally, the Solar Panels will keep your solar genny charged up, but for those days or weeks when you're getting very little Sun, then the smart propane genny will kick on and charge up your Delta Pro. The smart propane genny will never come on unless there's not enough charging current coming in from your solar panels. There's no need to be running a noisy gas genny unless there's no other alternative.*

Hi Jay - my wife and I just recently discovered your channel, and we really enjoy it. We are in the early phases of planning our next adventure in life, moving toward a more self-sufficient, somewhat off-grid life. What we love about your channel is the feeling of remoteness and survival blended with coziness. We love to camp, and my wife loves to "make do" with whatever gear/food we have available at the time. That's what we enjoy about your experiences...you are too remote to just run to the store to get something, so you have to plan, bring what you need, and do with what you have. Whether that be in a tent, a cabin, or something else, doesn't matter to us...we just enjoy watching your process!

LOVE your videos!! Regarding the generator -- motors need 3 things: fuel, air, and spark. Use only ethanol-free (ie, "rec") gas, check your air intake and filter, and change your spark plugs every year...even if you don't think you need to.

Awesome video, as usual, Jay. As a long time Honda EU2000 and EU2200 generator owner you’re in for a wild ride if you’re using ethanol fuel. The jets clog easily when using ethanol. Do your best to not use ethanol fuel. If you must use it, the only remedy is to have the tools on hand to quickly clean the carb when needed. It’s not difficult but is annoying.
@andyfunke9484
@andyfunke9484 8 ай бұрын
As a small engine mechanic, I have to agree. But all grades of fuel in Canada have ethanol in them. Premium has the least. I recommend to all my customers to run premium, whether it's a snowmobile or a snowblower, you'll run into the least amount of carburetor issues.
@nbco55
@nbco55 8 ай бұрын
You could put it into a carboy and let the alcohol separate out using about one cup of water per gallon. Or you can get a device that has a valve at the bottom called an ethinator. You still have to add water and shake it to make the gas and ethanol hit what's called phase separation. But after that you have pure gas

Making homemade bread in the wood stove worked better than I could imagine. Hopefully, you can get the wood stove oven to fit. Good luck with all the renovations you have planned. It's a work in progress that will be fun to follow. Safe travels on the snow and ice.

Cabin is new place. Beautiful and interesting. Different approaches when ice road opens. Lot to do. Yeah some remodel work. make it yours. Curtains for summer light block. Tent shack is ok, only so much you can do there. Arrive get wood eat go to bed. Days are so short and you can't get out much. Some ice fishing with a insulated tent would be good. Add to it. You lakes in front yard. RB tent is good for one off weekends maybe when it's super bad out to test yourself. Always fun. Northern lights. Get an atv in there for running around this summer at house. small trailer. Stock pile some serious wood. Build a wood shed. Things you need. Take care Happy Holidays

I'd like to know how feasible it is to either replace that particle board siding with logs, or put up a log exterior affixed to the boards for structural support. That cabin just looks like a powerful winter wind would knock it right over, and not only would the log reinforcement help, it might add an extra layer of insulation against the cold.

Suggestion. When you bring the gas line in through the window try putting a cut to length pool noodle on the edge of the window(s) to keep the cold air from coming inside. Also, the space between the outside window and the inside window can make a reasonably good refrigerator to keep food cold without electricity. We used to do that in the dorms at college during the winter. Great way to always have ice cold beer ready for consumption without it taking up a lot of room in the fridge.

Seeing the grey plywood floor reminds me of our camp. I haven't seen -23 in quite a while now. I am almost 63 and the cold is harder to deal with. I used to do what you do all the time. I spent many trips at our camp in the winter. About your different choice of tent...camp...etc....it's all good to watch. The next time your propane bottle is iced up, pour hot water on the valve. Hot water can work miracles. Many years ago my dad and I got nearly stranded at our camp in late November. It went down to -20. I had to put my 6.5 hp outboard next to the sauna wood stove to defrost it. The ice was 10cm thick by morning. It was a crazy boat ride across the lake busting ice.

In my head I was thinking "that bread is gonna burn" and then Jay pulls out a really good looking loaf. I really like seeing you experiment out there with camp cooking. For a first time loaf cooked in a wood stove, it looked perfect. I can't wait to see if you catch and cook anything through the ice.

Hi Jay, I would like to comment you on your video's because for a long time I watch them all. I want you to know that you bring joy to my life with every video you post. Not to long ago I found out that I am quit ill and probably will not recover from that. It won't take my life but will leed me to a wheel chair. I was always a tough guy like you. Thinking in the snow in the Austrian Mountains.....ice fishing all the nice stuff. And now it's not possible for me anymore. A few surgeries are coming in the new year. and I hope they bring me something. But every time I look to your video's it brings me joy and pleasure because I am in that moment with you on the snowmobile. Every time you take me with on an adventure. And that I am very thankful of my friend. So keep them coming and I'll be with you every time. Happy Holidays and warm season Greetings from Holland Johnxxx
