One thing about Carol Channing, she is the furthest thing from dull or boring. You just cannot take your eyes off her while she is on stage. She steals scenes by opening her big luminescent eyes, smiling that teethy grin, and then there is that unique raspy voice. She can't help herself. Behind all that, there is that incredible comedic sense and timing. On stage she was an experience.

She has such incredible charisma and presence, and she is also so generous with the spotlight. Whenever she performed with anyone, you can she was gracious with her performances, never to overshadow her co-performers.

I am so glad there is a film that captures the magic of Carol. In time, her stage presence will be forgotten. I was lucky enough to work with her on a project years ago. I hired her for a print ad for American Express. She WAS Carol Channing from the moment she walked into the studio. She wore a full-length red vinyl coat and handed out faux-diamond rings to everyone. Larger than life. A true delight.

So joyful and exuberant, it’s a shame her version of Dolly Levi was never captured in a feature film capacity because she’s totally captivating here.

@Hwilki: Unfortunately her voice and presence come s as cross as a cartoon. Perhaps if there was a scene where he voice sounded more natural than she wouldn’t have been crossed off the list to play ‘Dolly Levi (born Gallagher)’. Still they were older and better actresses than Streisand.

I saw this for the first time at 6 years old after watching it just went to bathroom mirror impersonating her singing the line “ Jazz Baby”. That was my memory 51 years ago !!! Seeing this second time in my lifetime just couldn’t believe how I remember the song. A few Years ago at my job In Beverly Hills was lucky enough to see her shopping for a cocktail dress trying on a Naeem Khan and she looked glamorously amazing in it! All these years since I was 6 never thought to see her in person but it happened! I was 🤩 starstruck !!!

I watched this for the first time a couple days ago. Husband loves the Broadway show, but never saw movie. The movie was good, but Carol Channing was mesmerizing. As much as I know her, this performance was a revelation to me, and made me angry, even more so, that she was snubbed for Hello, Dolly. She is magnificent on film. Some times great stage performers don’t translate to film (which is what I always assumed was reason for her not getting Hello, Dolly movie) but Carol does! She looks, sounds and performs amazing!

@@roxyshow123 : Hello Dolly was a flop only because of its $25 million production cost, which was incredibly expensive for its time. It still made $26 million, which was an impressive box office for 1969.

1967, pretending to be 1927. The clothes in the film set off a short 1920's fashion fad in early 1968. I still have my mother's department store 1920s-style dress.

That Carol did not get cast in the film version of Hello Dolly -a role she created on stage- just two years after this smashing performance remains a frustrating missed opportunity. The film version of Hello Dolly is totally missing the sparkle that only Carol Channing could give.

@@laerwen Unfortunately, it will. This was a popular play with high schools and dinner theaters, but was pulled from the market and retooled for modern audiences. If you see it (I did, at a thrift store over the weekend), buy it. It is unlikely to be shown on TV or available to stream. It will be a SAD day when Julie Andrews leaves us.
