I can't begin to explain how much I love this- a clarinet player not trying to blow out eardrums with the extremely high notes. I play so I know those high notes aren't really talent, but people for whatever reason are impressed by them. You are so much better!
@paulclarey46693 жыл бұрын
Me too! I agree. Been getting into using the lower register more. After hearing this I'm definitely going to use it more.
@squikymouse36023 жыл бұрын
I thought they played the high notes because it's one way to stand out when soloing, the clarinet isn't known to be the loudest instrument especially when surounded by tenors and trumpets.

What kind of clarinet does he use in the video?

Only problem is when playing with other naturally loud instruments like trumpet or trombone, in which case it's usually the only time you can stand out

This is sweet. For those of you who don't know, that clarinet is playing a variation of one of the rhythms in the Essential Elements for Jazz book. If you're new to jazz, get that book, it's great. I just love how the melody is still there, but not the same.

I played Clarinet in middle school. I quit because my band director wouldn't let me be in Jazz band. He said Clarinet wasn't Jazz.

That’s great! An amazing instrument. A million years ago I used to take flute lessons from a guy who played clarinet. He lived in an apartment and couldn’t really let loose there. He’d come over to my place and give me a lesson and then blow some clarinet. I used to be amazed at how loud it could get. It sounded beautiful. Good luck to you on your journey to learn it. It should be amazing.

This is fine .... I am 78 and my favorite jazz clarinet was legendary Johnny Dodds. Oh what a feeling HE could get out of his clarinet. I have always loved the lower tunes on my clarinet. Once I could play petit fleur ... and even wild cat blues ... but I think - at least I should - rehearse and rehearse to keep it up. Sorry I did not do that, but I still have my instrument and sometimes I get joy by my self playing a little bit now and then. And I am still crazy with saxophones chorus when they are swinging. That is from swinging jazzbands up to Fats Domino and other bands like that. Good music thougths to all of you.❤

Y’all killed it. That was amazing and I love the fact that there is a clarinetist here on KZfaq with some actual talent. I feel like it’s always kids trying to play pop songs when it comes to clarinet and they are great at it but they sound like they are in your average middle school band(not exactly the best sound you can get out of a clarinet) I have upgraded my clarinet since middle school however I did so because I could afford it and I wanted a wooden one. Once I got it I decided that I would actually take the clarinet seriously and so I looked into studies and what not and discovered that overtones are the way to go. If you can hit the overtones whenever you want, then your sound will be immensely better than that of a middle school band kid.

@sydmccreath4554 you have probably more experience in clarinet & listening to different clarinet player/sounds. Maybe that’s why it didn’t sound unique to you. It was a personal opinion anyway. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Cheers
