@AtticsTV
@AtticsTV 4 жыл бұрын
Im sure part is counting, but I know when I play guitar myself to weird time signatures without a click or a drummer, I can keep it all by just muscle memory and feel. I might not be as tight with timing but I have the timing down that way. So I imagine part is counting, and part is just super muscle memory and comfort, and just knowing what the groove sounds like in your head.

Also regularly see him at The Baked Potato where he sometimes does little jazz gigs. Everytime he carts in every piece to his kit and sets it up. A lot of those nights he played jazz he had also played all day with tool writing the new album. He's legendary but doesnt act like it.

@@ltrzepalko Don't confuse inconsistent time keeping with "tHe HuMan ElEmEnt" - some of the best drummers are capable of keeping time to a machine-like level of consistency, even without a click. It's their ability to work fluidly within that time on the micro-level without actually affecting its consistency on the macro-level of a song that separates actual live 'unassisted' if you will drumming from today's horridly quantized(you better be staying up on your Rick Beato content!) recorded drumming/music. It's the ability to insert a fluid fill inside of an utterly ridgid time structure, it's not a constantly wavering time due to a drummer's variance without a click vs with a click. If a click changes the way you sound, that isn't the click's fault - [assuming that the song fits within one of course] Danny Carey isn't just miraculously going to sound 'inhuman' or like a 'robot' just because you put a click in his ear Different tools for different music; what matters is the MUSIC, NOT how it's made or how it's played. Make it/play it however the hell you want, however best works for you. You've gotta find out if someone is using a click before you can criticize them for it after all...

The "pad" with the drumhead on it is a Korg Wavedrum. It is electronic, but it's not a trigger-based solution. It takes the actual tone of the drumhead and processes it to make different sounds. This means you can play it with hands, brushes, sticks, mallets, etc and get completely different sounds. It's a really cool unit.

His power and physicality are crazy good for his age. 58 isn't really "old" these days, but it's still pretty damn unusual to be doing what Danny does here at nearly 60. Most drummers will experience something of a drop off in some facet of their game once they reach their late 40s to early 50s (akin to how someone in their mid-to-late 30s will often begin to noticeably drop off in combat/contact sports) but Danny is still killing it and doing so much better than a lot of aging drummers....
