"Autumn Leaves" by Joseph Kosma is one of the most frequently performed jazz standards of all time. It's required learning for every musician from hobbyists to professionals - and it's also a great tune for learning several different concepts of harmony.
In this video I demonstrate 5 different 'levels' of practice - methods you can use to develop your jazz vocabulary and improvisations over this song.
There is no easy way to play jazz at a high level - there are a lot of things musicians need to internalize to be able to do it. Figuring out what to practice first is sometimes the biggest obstacle, and that's why I've organized these five different levels.
If you enjoy these videos please subscribe, like, turn on notifications and all that other jazz.
Thanks!
-Tim

Thank you for being one of the few that analyzes Autumn Leaves in MINOR! Too many people look at this as a tune that is in major and modulates to the relative minor. Keep it in minor! Also, this video is a great prescription for CST-osis. Symptoms of Chord Scale Theory-osis include: playing disconnected lines, ignoring the melody, and excessive urination from drinking too much from the Berklee fountain. I see your video as layers/steps to improvisation instead of levels of expertise. Too many start with chord tones, I like the idea of starting with Gminor (or G pentatonic) and laying in everything else as you go deeper into the tune. Improvising is like cooking. You gotta start with garlic and olive oil in your improvisation, than layer in the veggies (and meat, if needed) and THEN spice it up. Same with improvisation, you gotta play in layers--for what it's worth. Anyway, Tim, I emailed you at your business email. We both grew up in the same state, gotta love the fall season over there! Let me know if you got my email.

Thanks! Yes I agree it’s easier to keep it in minor. Less thinking - more playing.. that’s my motto. I’m not sure I got your email- when did you send it?

@@TimCollinsVibes You've DEFINITELY got me thinking about how to spice up G minor pentatonic over Autumn Leaves - Brilliant stuff. Especially love the altered harmony licks over the minor 2-5-1...

Great video. I feel it would be even better if there were time codes inserted for the different topics/chapters, so we could go right to them without having to scrub the time line for them... Once again, it's a great video. Very helpful and packed full of useful information...

Good old Eric Clapton should watch this. He might learn how to spice up his G minor pentatonic licks, though since he's got £300 million in the bank, I wouldn't have though he'd be that motivated...

Sure, I guess..but that’s not a bad thing. You can play great solos just using level 1. Some would argue maybe that they are the best solos.
