Fascinating to hear how the straight shape of the horn gives it a warmer and rounder tone, exactly like the straight sop vs the curved one. Very nice film and music by the way.

Hi Randy ,Superb Job on this track! and the players are wonderful as well . i am interested to know what signal chain did you use for the Sax ? i can see 2 amazing oldies mic's beside Al ,is it 44BX and a CMV563 (which capsule?)? preamp ? not sure ...anyways what did you end up using in the mix? its definitely the most natural sound of a saxophone i heard so far.period.i also liked the idea you did not use any reverb on the track and if i am not mistaken all i hear is the room ,this is how jazz suppose to be. keep on & Best Regards.

Hi, thank you for your positive comments. The German mic is actually a pre-war Neumann CMV-3A with M7 capsule that has been very nicely restored by Leo Schaal in Germany. It's not in the mix unfortunately, I would have needed to place it further back, and as the drums were in the same room, it was capturing too much bleed. What you hear is the RCA 44-A through a Neve preamp. There is some reverb on certain instruments.

That was a 1927 Buescher straight alto, they made a tipped bell C soprano as well, the two were offered at the same time in the late '20's. A bit of a novelty, but very nice sounding instruments too. Al rebuilt it from the ground up.
