You know what? I appreciate that you never pause during your reactions, but I can forgive pausing at that spot.

Yep that's polyphonic singing and not many can do it. She's voicing several notes at the same time. Singers can sometimes do it when they have a head cold. But Lalah can do it at will. Oh and this won them the Grammy.

She's alien bro, I couldn't believe what I heard! I didn't know it won them the Grammy. That's Wild!

It’s otherworldly. The only other artist I’ve heard do polyphonic overtones is Avi Kaplan from (ex) Pentatonix. Knocks me back every time.

@@greggary7217 Check out Stitch - Feels like nothing, its beatboxing and it's got some insane polyphonics in it. Lalah and him and Avi are definitely the best polyphonic singers I've ever seen.

She said in a conversation with Robert Glasper, that she doesn't really know how to control it. Sometimes it's two and sometimes it's even four! That's amazing. She just stumbles upon this thing that people have to TRY to get or people can never do. It's like the singing gods just favor her.Lol

If you’re unaware of who Donny Hathaway is, please look him up. Especially his work with Roberta Flack and his early live albums. He’s basically the man that if he stayed around before his untimely death in his early 30s would have been giving Stevie Wonder a run for his money! This is his little girl Lalah channeling her father’s magical energy. And YEAH, that was such a heart stopper of a vocal move! A well deserved Grammy win for everyone involved.

I was a middle school music teacher and received a big box of CSs free as some CA court settlement. Most were junk nobody would buy, but one was a Tibetan Monk singing with multi-phonics. There was a low growling, drone note with two (and sometimes three) high notes "whistling" and changing against the steady low note. Fun, but glad I didn't pay for it. The added "spice" Lalah added to her improv was both surprising and appropriate. Your reaction wins the internet,

Her artistry is next level, even just the way she sings the note at the end of her solo scat/chord-singing section to signify the return of the full forces of the band (the coda I guess?) is wow. She sings 2 same notes, but the 2nd one has that extra zing of intensity and change of tone that drives the energy into the next section. And her range, my goodness. You should listen to Jazmine Sullivan too (in case you haven't), another singer with outrageous vocal talents, incredible tone, range, control, the lot. Like Lalah. Although she can't sing chords so....

You've been opened up to lalahtones.... Scientifically, with a little practice, you can manipulate your upper and lower vocal chords to vibrate independently. Thus allowing you to sing 2-3 notes at one time. It's kid of similar to tuvan throat singing, but she's actually controlling the interval. It's literally amazing watching and listening to her do this. I have a music degree, and literally only one person I know can do this. I can personally sing and get the beginning squeaks of a second note out. Janis Joplin is an example of someone that did this during some of her tunes by screaming. Lalah can do it in any dynamic. Which is scary. The third one she did on this is a tri-tone mixed into an octave. If you listen real close she sings 3 notes. Truthfully sick.

Future of music articles be like, "this person sang every section of the choir all by themselves..." I have a bachelor's degree in jazz piano and a lil bit of drumming from school. But maan, this is something i've never heard of... i was also in a choir in the academy and was learning some Bass singing technique that gets your voice an octave lower. No surprise there would be techniques where you can do something so astronomical... :O

Larnell is still not here :) - he joined in 2014 for the recording of the album “we liked here” . Robert “Sput” Searight shines on this record :) p.s. I think it's time to enjoy Vulfpeck for starters with "Dean Town" as well as Dirty Loops with for example "Songs for lovers- coffee break is over” .. and then we'll come back to Snarky Puppy with more great suggestions: ) Greetings!
