In this series of videos I cover jazz piano voicings. I'll go through a number of different voicings which will make any jazz song sound strong and professional.
This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about the So What Chord Voicing. This chord voicing derives its name from the song 'So What' by Miles Davis. In this song the pianist, Bill Evans, plays a particular chord voicing which has become known as the So What Chord.
The So What Chord is two handed chord voicing made up of 5 notes and built up out of 3 intervals of Perfect Fourths and a Major 3rd on top. So for example the D So What Chord is: D-G C-F-A
This D So What Chord can function as a Dm11, BbMaj13, EbMaj13#11 or G9sus chord.
Chords built largely out of fourths rather than thirds (such as the So What Chord) are considered much more 'modern' sounding. They are a bit more ambiguous and do not sound like they need to resolve to any particular chord.

This musician is so good in explaining. All the other guys were making it very difficult to understand. And what I like most is he avoids using phrases like, today I am going to teach you, or the lesson, etc... Very humble and very good. Excellent job.

This is awesome, thank you so much for doing this. One thing i want to add as a bassist is that on the 4th phrase when the bass line drops down to the low , the rhythm is a dotted quarter the D note before. Somehow this got lost from the recording when people started playing this at jam sessions and such. Just a note, but thanks for the video.

So that means this chord is a first inversion 5-quartal chord.

Walk That Bass I find it interesting that that inversion gives is a completely different feel. This doesn't just float to my ear. I instinctively hear it as a V9sus chord (unless I play other chords around it). But if I play it as just quartals, it does just float. I'm glad you're past the more basic stuff and into stuff I haven't heard before.

Sorry for the late reply. I was away on holiday for the last month. I used the So What chord voicing on the CMaj7 essentially to demonstrate that you don't always have to play a chord with the melody note on top. I played the melody note (E) separately, and then played a So What chord voicing for CMaj13 and CMaj13#11 (as per the graph at 4:00). You can, of course, play a chord voicing with the E as the top note, but this is a lesson on the So What chord voicing, so I tried to play it as much as possible. In practice you would generally pick a different chord voicings to get the E at the top. Does that answer your question?
