Just to briefly note the version of "Sunlight" (by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays) I analyze in this video is not a 1-1 rendition of the original, but preserves the main ideas related to key modulations. Next week: Polychords!

With the holidays over , i have finally gotten to this lesson. It's really great information and truly pleasing to the ear. I'm not sure if I get the melodic motifs, but this series of lessons has been exceptional. Thank you for talking the time to do this. It provides a solid base on which to move forward. I have found I have already incorporated eome of these techniques into my playing

It seems like there would also be a lot of cases where one would want to AVOID playing chords that might give a sense of modulation or change of tonal center, for instance if you want to play in a certain mode.

The explanation of Sunlight is amazing! Could you do the same on James for the next lesson if you think it’s appropriate?
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 8 ай бұрын
It has to fit to some theme. Next in line is polychords which is not exactly related to James. In fact, not sure what topic James would fit under ... hnmmmm I'll give it some thought!

In 4min, you modulated to Eb, how did you go back to C by just playing Dm? I cant find a connection of Dm to the Eb key, does it matter? Should we just follow the 25 or 251 rule?

Another great lesson man! Thanks for sharing. I have one question though! In you own experience. Are there modulation more smooths than others? I imagine that some modulations (via 2-5-1 for example) sound smoother/nicer given the relationship to the initial key. I know in orinciple we can use this technique to modulate to any key but I guess some are nicer than others, whats your take on it?
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 8 ай бұрын
251s will always sound the smoothest, regardless of ending or beginning keys, especially if you do your voice leading right.

@@MangoldProject I have to practice voice leading then! Thanks for answering
@MangoldProject

@@albertosierraalta3223 Voice leading is everything in jazz. You can voice lead complete nonsense into complete nonsense (in the sense that it has no formal theoretical explanation), and if you do it smoothly enough, it will sound awesome :)

What modulation is this one : It sounds Great C -> F# -> Bb The 3 are major
@MangoldProject
@MangoldProject 8 ай бұрын
I don't think there's a special name for that. It's also hard to say which chord is a tonal center or not without listening to the melody and full progression.
