This is so interesting. Much of it is over my head but it gives me something to reach for. Thank you!

These lessons are great! Humbling too, since it lays out all the stuff you need to know to be really fluent.

Well this was mind-bending. That progression, in all keys, is getting woven into my practice routine. This video is an example of things I used to see on this channel that left me inspired but also a bit frustrated. I was in the foothills looking up. at, maybe not the summit, but something far over my head. Now I know exactly what I need to do.

Awesome. I'd argue that likely both of us have changed: I've learned to make better videos, and you've learned to be a better player.

I'll try, but honestly the response to the series was underwhelming so I'll probably take some time to rethink how to proceed/rebrand.

@@MangoldProject If you were to continue with the series and, say, stop at 20 lesson , what key 'chapters'/lessons would you add?

@@stevesandgroper3241 Having mostly finished functional harmony (maybe in one or two lessons), I'd first have maybe 1-2 videos of examples and analysis. Then I'd dedicate the remainder to non-functional harmony - modal, some bebop, some Barry Harris chords, chromatic harmony ... You know, an assortment of so-called "advanced" topics one might encounter after completing their grounding in functional harmony.

@@MangoldProject Thank you. I understand the effort required to make quality tutorial videos like yours should be rewarded by viewership. There is no doubt jazz piano is difficult to master and many beginners probably get discouraged if they aren't able to play "Autumn Leaves" after a 15-min video. I, myself, have been practicing the 2-5-1 progression in all keys and shell-guide tone combinations for months with microscopic improvement. In any case, I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and your style of teaching which likely comes from your academic background.

At the end when you describe practicing using 2, 5, 1 and playing the so what chord as the 5, it will be interesting to see/hear the scales applicable; such as the Mixolydian, HW-diminished, Aeolian Dominant. Very cool. All this is going to keep me busy for weeks and weeks/months.

That's very difficult to answer without knowing something about the melody. The So-What chord, used as a m11 chord, fixes the following degrees (relative to the major scale): 1, 4 (or 11), b7, b3, 5 (or, in order: 1, b3, 4, 5, b7). Without knowing anything in addition, you could in theory use any scale that doesn't clash with these degrees, so you wouldn't use the harmonic minor, but, e.g., Dorian and Aeolian would both work. To make a concrete decision you would need to know more about the melody, the preceding/subsequent chords, and the "mood" of the piece.

@@MangoldProjectThank you. If you are ever motivated to put this entire lesson series into PDF/digital form, complete with relevant scores, videos etc., I have no doubt that there would be many of us that would be more than happy to contribute monetarily to its production. In my case, I have downloaded all the lessons to my hard drive and have numerous screenshots saved as references. My personal goal is to be able to simply play as if a lounge musician wandering through medleys and the circle of fifths improvising as I play and just getting lost in the music wherever it takes me. I am confident that with your help I’m going to accomplish my goals.
This will change the way you think about music theory
