Also a tip for working with foam, specifically finishing it off: you can spackle the parts you want smooth with a few layers of joint compound or spackle paste, sanding in between layers until you get the hardness/shape/smoothness you want, then prime that and paint it. That way you can fill in any dents or rough edges that are inevitable to get while making it, and the surface can look as smooth and hard as you want it. Plus it’s more durable that way. Takes a buttload of time though. Source: I’m an industrial design student and this is how we make fake plastic or metal looking models without fabrication capabilities 👍🏻
