Here I am, after 2 years of his passing I finally started playing drums, and I now realize how talented he is, he's been an amazing inspiration for me now

He didn’t keep the beat, he took it out, showed it a special time, and then did things with it that are beyond the imagination of mere mortals. Heavenly music just got cool.

Zora Xye I am flattered! I will sadly tell you that my writing tends to be scientific or technical, rather than poetic. Although the best of this type of writing CAN be poetic, like when a mathematical proof is labelled “elegant”, or when a scientific journal article tells a story instead of being just a dry recitation of facts. Instead, I will recommend my brother-in-law, David K. Leff, who writes very amazing free verse, and what I like to call “inner travelogues”, about how travel and experience lead to a “spiritual” voyage (spiritual in the broad, not religious sense).

Even when he played traditional jazz records, you can hear the Afrobeat. Blending genres and transcending any single one. We’ve lost a giant.

This is how you become a legend - most of what he does is in the realm of technical ability of a lot of drummers, but only he can do it. Also, I forever love how much he's choking up on his right stick.

Tony allen is one of the reasons i picked up the sticks 23 years ago. Still trying to learn how to put some of those rhythms down nicely today. It ain't easy. Sounds it, sometimes, but it just ain't easy! He was master and pioneer. R.I.P.

The word genius is often overused. Not in his case: he practically re-invented drums, with a delicate and complex web of polyrythms, pulsed by an implacable groove

We are literally losing Music. I know the Recordings last always, but if all the Musicians are gone, then what? Most schools don't even have Music class anymore. I wish I had kept playing past 6th Grade😔
