No other jazz musicians have captured the hearts and imagination of musicians and jazz fans around the world as those of the Bunk Johnson and George Lewis bands. In the late 1940's, throughout the 50's and up until the present day, aspiring musicians have tried to emulate the playing of these men. Also,as jazz fans, we were all in awe of the classic jazz masters such as Oliver, Morton, Armstrong, Bechet et al, and of of we still are. In my case and for many others, when I first heard that tone and soaring clarinet of George Lewis, together with Big Jim Robinson's gutsy and rhythmic trombone, my life changed forever. It was not about the technique or flashy embellishment of an instrument, but the SOUND and feeling of collective improvisation that came out of their horns. Their music, was in fact, very primitive and archaic sounding, but once you heard it you were hooked. Of course, the one common denominator of all these New Orleans bands was George. His beautiful tone still sends shivers down my spine.
Kid Howard had the technique and was often described as an Armstrong imitator, but when it came to building a climax on the last chorus he was your man. He was exciting to listen to and he generated a lot of fire in those ensemble improvisations. Big Jim also provided the punch and excitement that we all love to hear. Together with my favourite rhythm section, viz; Marrero, Slow Drag, Watkins and Alton Purnell, I am in my musical heaven.
These three tracks are not the best of George, but typical of the period and I was able to fit them into my 10 minute allocation for a video. The picture do not necessarily match the tracks, but are representative of the New Orleans musicians around at that time. Because of the number of takes( recordings) for each tune by the band, it is tough to not make a mistake in dates and personnel. I know I screwed up here and I apologize, but at my age I don't care. It's the music that counts, so sit back and listen to some great music. Enjoy !!

When everybody tried to imitate Louis Armstrong, Arthur "Abraham" Tester told me: "Just play like Bunk Johnson". Eventually, this was not easy at all.

Perfectly expressed Jazzbobill-you captured the essence of the spirit and soul of how this music moves one and transforms one's aesthetics and life appreciation with absolute precision. Thanks too for the choice of tracks-George's clarinet makes them 'come alive' as if recorded just yesterday.

Thanks for your comments "Planet Earth". This very low down blues version of Careless Love (1943) is indeed exceptional and is one of my favorites. Usual front line viz: George /Kid / Big Jim, with Marrero on banjo and Chester Zardis - bass & Edgar Mosley - drums. On the 1954 recording of Walking With The King, it's Marreo & Slow Drag with Joe Watkins on drums. He is also doing the vocal. You can't beat that sound that George and his 'mens' create. I will add more tags as suggested by you.

Hi Peter, I'm fine, thanks for asking. Coming up to 90 next May, but still enjoying life and, of course, that wonderful New Orleans music. It still sends shivers up my spine. Are you still playing ? The last I see of the Alabama Jazz Band is a posting by"Kliko" 5 years ago. Glad to see so many young musicians keeping good jazz alive. Keep swinging ! Bill

Hi Bill, yes Alabama Jazz Band and New Orleans Hill Jazz Band still alive plus Riverboat stokers (since 1977). And since approx. 2012 WIZARDS OF CREOLE JAZZ with no Trumpet, Trombone and Drums, dedicated to the music of Sidney Bechet, just Google it. KliKo sadly left us 2013. Next May coming up 79. Cheers my friend.

Hi Peter, I have just heard the Wizards. That's a nice group that you have there. George is my favorite clarinet player, but I am also a huge Bechet fan . I have most of his recordings. You have certainly got his tone on "Roses Of Picardy" and you play a nice "Wildcat Blues". I am surprised at how young your appreciative audience is. It's nice to see !. Keep up the good work. Signing off now to go back to hear more of your band. Take care my friend ! Bill

I tried to play this stuff with various trad outfits for years on trombone, trumpet and vocals and never came anywhere near this standard. The fading in and out is instictive and shows guys totally in synch with one another. Just so enjoyable. Bob Thomas ex South Coast Stompers Cyprus.2000 to 2013
