JBL Charge 4: amzn.to/3StGmOO
The JBL Charge 5 portable bluetooth speaker was just announced in 2021 but it's predecessor still has plenty of power. In fact, the main driver is fed with the same 30 watts as the new JBL Charge 5, which also has a separate 10 watt channel powering it's newly added high frequency driver.
Video showing how to disable the DSP aka activate "Low frequency mode" plus a short bass test illustrating the effect. The new JBL Charge 4 is part of JBL's 2018 lineup which consists of JBL Go 2, JBL Clip 3, JBL Xtreme 2 and JBL PartyBox.

Video showing how to disable the DSP aka activate "Low frequency mode" plus a short bass test illustrating the effect. This can be done for fun to watch the driver and passive radiators showing extreme excursion or to achieve low bass response at lower volumes when used with an equalizer or bass boosted songs. With normal songs you don't get any benefit! *Beware this is not a safe mode for the speaker, it can excessively heat up, bottom out and get damaged. Use with caution!!*

Honestly, it sounds worse when I enable it. I notice the passive radiators definitely shake more without it enabled, I am using an equaliser with some bass boost and keeping it off gives better low end and mids. This is listening to fabriclive 37, a classic dubstep album with a lot of subbass emphasis. Not sure if I'm doing it wrong or what, but someone else said that turning the speaker on and off resets this function, is that true? Cheers in advance for the video and your response.
@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 4 жыл бұрын
Your results are correct. The reason why it sounds worse is because you reach the drivers limits way too early and the passive radiators are not tuned for such a low frequency. The default tuning cuts all the low frequencies below 40 hz and has a boost around 60 that's why it sounds fuller than the LFM which is basically a flat response down to 1 Hz. And yes, turning off and back on the speaker will reset it to default sound profile. LFM a popular thing on YT just because it makes the drivers and radiators move like crazy not necessarily because it improves the sound. It can, but other mods should be made on the speaker to achieve that.

@@AudioCuriosity thank you I was hoping that way. Do you think is this can be usable as a playing speaker with daws? Im Ableton user I thought I can use my own DSP so without pushing to much it can maybe survive right? Also how about the Charge 5 , in my local 5 is more cheper? Have you ever tested?
@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 2 күн бұрын
Yeah you should be able to use your own sound processing without issues as long as it's not some crazy 24dB bass boost and high volume. Also, for better bass extension with dsp disabled, I recommend sealing one of the passive radiators, hear the effect in my video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNagiJN0tLDDo6M.html . About the Charge 5, I don't think it's possible to disable it's DSP like with the 4. Might be achievable something similar with the phone set to Mono output but I'm not sure. So if disabling the DSP is important to you Charge 4 is the right model.

Yes, mine resets after turning it off. You can check by using a tone generator app set to 20 hz and slowly turn up the volume. If the passive radiators move a lot then the DSP is disabled, if barely moving then it’s in default mode.

From what I know it only disables the sound profile applied to the sound (DSP) so it will sound flatter (less bass hump in the 70's region and more in the lower Hz). But it might change other things too that I don't know of.. with my speaker I didn't have any issued after trying this.

Because this is *Not* a feature of the speaker, it's a *service mode* they use to troubleshoot the speaker. You shouldn't use it basically, so do at your own risk. I don't recommend it if you don't know what you're doing because you can damage your speaker. And this "mode" won't give you more bass because the speaker wasn't designed for it. It simply disables the bass filter so the driver moves more, but doesn't actually make more bass.
@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 4 жыл бұрын
It also might void the warranty too, so if something bad happens they might not fix it for you, that's why I don't recommend it. I've made a video about it because it was a popular topic on YT.

You can use LFM but just for fun. I tried and just.... basic. Keep in mind that your volume should not pass 50% (60% max) to ensure you dont damage the driver

if you're careful with volume level and EQ the sound yourself, you can get very nice audio with the speaker in LFM

I think it can if you play it loud and for long.. I recommend against it if you're not sure what you're doing, there no real sound improvement from this.

@AudioCuriosity

yes LFM it flattens the bass but also allows low frequencies to pass, that's why if you try heavy bass boosted songs you'll see the radiators move a lot more than in "default" mode

To connect multiple JBL speakers you simply press the Connect+ button on each, but first you need a master speaker connected to your bluetooth device.

LFM does flatten the bass response, but it also disables the high pass filter which allows very low frequencies to be played. so if you'll play a heavily bass boosted song with low bass you'll see a lot more movement from the radiators
