Great looking speakers and I bet they sound as great as they look. I've been saving my pennies to buy a great pair of classic live sounding speakers like these JBL L100 -75 or something in the Klipsch Heritage line. I wish JBL would do something similar to a heritage line. They have made some legendary designed speakers over the many years and it would be an awesome thing to see these classic designs brought back and updated. Great video!

I became convinced about the 4311’s overall sound when I worked at a show in an approximately 10,000 square ft auditorium. It was the Kodak road show, they provided their own sound system, only four JBL 4311’s. The sound was so full and clean I couldn’t believe it. I ordered a pair for myself, I still have that pair of JBL’s and the continue to provide great sound in my secondary sound system. No regrets.

As a studio musician in the 70's and early 80' , every studio had a least one pair of 4311's in the engineers booth. Some of the audio youtuber's don't think much of the L100's. Thank you for being so positive about them. People also talk about wanting to get the "original sound" that the band wanted people to hear. Well they were all mastered on a set of 4311's. Sadly the musicians of today do not take the time that we did back then to listen to hours of playback. Thank you for the history info as well. I lived through those days, JBL made much of it possible. It amazes me how many young people listen to the same music I did growing up, 40 years later. I have a set of L100's on order.

The original 54 yo design may not be accurate by todays standards but it was a great studio monitor by 1968 standards. The new L100 has nothing in common with the 4310 (L100) of old other than the external cabinet dimensions. Nothing. I’ll bet you dollars to donuts the new L100 is more accurate than anything you have actually heard in person.

I have a pair of these and love them to bits. I only drive them with a 90wpc 5.1 amp atm but am VERY keen to find a nice stereo amp for them.......ideally with VU meters but only want to spend £2000 max. I have some vintage PA gear too and my JBL 4550s (a design almost 100 years old) are still outstanding for low-mid range. I have 8 of them in my mates lockup, 4 x 2" big radial JBL horns, 4 x altec 1" horns. All horns are loaded with JBL PRO compression drivers. 4 x martin audio MH212 "philishave" high-mid range horns and some Motorola piezo tops for a Bit of up close tweet. I have some old martin y bins and 8 x wattco 18"folded horns and 2 racks of very old crest audio pro 8001 and 4801 amps and a modern MC2 amp for the mid-top Ive not plugged in any of my PA kit for about 10 years now but it used to sound so so good - really lovely warm sound from the 4550 low-mids.....they may look archaic but I love those speakers so much. My ancient JBY PA sounds far nicer than modern stuff like Function one, Void etc.......just has a lovely warm inviting sound to it. JBL and old Altec gear is second to none IMO anyhow. can you recommend an amp for the l100s for less than £2000???? VU meters or not

In the 70's and I was there audiophiles were much more into Advent and AR speakers on a budget. If you liked the west coast sound JBLs were for you. Let's get one thing straight the sound at live concerts sucks no matter whose equipment is used. The spaces suck the speakers are rarely placed well for decent sound. The only requirement is that they play loud and clear but do little to reproduce the actual performance.
@edwardgonczy3170
@edwardgonczy3170 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, sadly, some of us are on a budget. I first got into audio in the early 70's and for my money and a small dorm room, the EPI M100 was the ticket. But I could live with The Smaller Advent or the Dynaco A25. And I had one friend that actually preferred the JBL L26 Decade over the L100. He felt the mid range driver overpowered the sound and was more fitted to a recording studio than a home environment.

@@edwardgonczy3170 You see everyone hears differently and have different taste. My first misguided attempt at audiophile sound was the Bose 901 S2. My next attempt was the Spica TC50, an SAE amp and, Counterpoint preamp. Probably the most musical system I ever owned. I know people who sweared by Klipsch speakers until they heard my JM Labs speakers. That's the beauty of this hobby.

Jbl always disappointed me in the end. Gross shop friendly sound, but at home , problems arise, turn up the volume in my treated big room and they just can't handle it, no bracing inside, cheap X over full of electrolytic caps, with serious music they are finished. No classical, jbl is intent in saving 30 bucks in the production line, that same money could make a huge improvement in sound with bracing, simpler and better X over, and silicon gaskets. Not so many people can afford 20.000 bucks a piece 6600 s, but c Mon JBL make more decent items and keep them in production, don't change every six months. For that plastic gadgets too !!!!

There are terms that we use and jargon, that we, speak. In the world of Pro Audio. Which I have been directly involved with now for over 53 years. At the highest levels. At the hit recording studios. At the major radio and TV networks. The first, the best, the original RCA. NBC, Scully, Ampex, MCI, 3M, API, Neve, Auditronics and so on and so forth. I mean it's crazy. And so the point is? We use the term Phase and Polarity. Which most people think means the same thing. Au contraire they do not. Though they are based on a similar, premise and theory. There are indeed, 2 different types of that. One dealing with, low voltages, small timing errors i.e. phase correlations. And the one, that takes a lot of power. To move a lot of air. You have that Absolute Polarity. To be aware of. And the problem here. Is that, no one was able to think deep enough. To get this Absolute Polarity, correct. And where do you find this? You find it at the tail end of the process. Called the audio power amplifier output. That is then connected to the speaker drivers. And everyone has gotten this backwards. Except for, JBL. Now I discovered this anomaly. Back in 1978. When I designed and built, Baltimore's, 2nd Largest, Music Recording and Commercial Production Facility. When we were being entertained, by another speaker manufacturer called Polk Loudspeakers. Owned by Matthew Polk. An old friend of my recording studio business partner. And he wanted us to use his speakers. So Matthew came over to our brand-new studio. I had a multi-monitor switchable configuration. To accommodate up to 3 pairs of separate monitor speakers. And I discovered the Polk speakers were " Out Of Phase ". To our 4311's. Which I thought strange. And wondered why he got those terminals backwards? So I connected his speakers, backwards. To match the Absolute Polarity of our JBL's. And they sounded much better! But they still couldn't compare to the sound of the, JBL's. Then my partner Philip turned up the volume. Where we were really Rockin'. And he blew the tweeters on Matthew's speakers. Matthew was not happy. He gathered up his speakers and left.. Philip was laughing his ass off. I felt bad for Matthew. I felt bad that he didn't figure out the speaker polarity thing. Because his way with obviously, sonically and acoustically, wrong. Over the years. I've discovered. Everybody's speakers are in, Negative Absolute Polarity. And personally. I cannot monitor on speakers that are in negative polarity together. It does not register correctly in my brain. I need my speakers wired for Positive Absolute Polarity. Which means. You have to invert the polarity at the power output. Not at the input to the power amplifier. That merely flips the phase. That does not change the Absolute Polarity. This is what everybody missed. What everybody got wrong. With their stupid college degrees. I don't have a college degree. I'm just naturally very smart and rather brilliant. And I figured out what's happening and why this is. The problem is one of, religious doctrine. The same way people can prove to you. That Jesus exists. Which, they can't, exactly, deliver, Jesus. Because he really doesn't exist within our time. And he is someone's, construct. And the same with audio. And why this has happened. This has happened for a couple of reasons. One being ignorance. The other a religious belief. Neither can be convinced they are wrong. As they can prove they are right. And then I can prove they are wrong. And they finish saying. But I'm used to using it that way.. Which is only a sad excuse for having been clueless all of these years past. And college grads are taught mathematical equations from their textbooks. And they do not question their Bible called a textbook. It is Gospel! And they have their tests. They can prove. That there left and right channels are not only both in phase together. They are in positive polarity. Yes but they are not even though they are. And here's what's happening. This came both said they did not want to have any out of phase information in their signal chain. And that was provided for them. That's what we have here. They think they are in positive polarity. But they really aren't. And here's why the polarity not the phase needs to be inverted at the power amplifier output to the speaker input. That moves the air. (More better sound in following post)
@RemyRAD
@RemyRAD 10 ай бұрын
When they get everything in phase together. Your speakers are now, Mimicking the Motion. Of the microphone diaphragms. And correct me if I'm wrong here? When a sound pressure wave hits the diaphragm of the microphone. It shoves it, inward. In to the body of the, microphone. And would you want your speakers doing that? Sucking away from you? No you would not! But that's precisely what you have been listening to all these years. The joke is on you. No one could think this through properly. You have to go from the microphone diaphragms. All the way through. Until it comes out the audio power amplifier. And what is Absolute Polarity? Positive or negative? Everybody is wired negative except for JBL and me. And it's an absolute, Game Changer! So I have fixed recording studios radio and TV stations, big and small. Because the, Electrical Engineers and the Acoustic Engineers. With their college degrees. Have all gotten this wrong. Because they cannot think through the recording process? And how do you want your speakers responding? Convince yourself they are wired correctly when they are not? And so this is a free fix anybody can do. If you have a pair of speakers with your stereo hi-fi. Simply flip the, plus and minus or red and black. On the back of both speakers. Invert both at the speakers. Or at the back of the amplifier. As long as you invert both at the output of the audio power amplifier. Not at the input. And nowhere further upstream. As that inverts phase it does not invert polarity. And so in the land of Pro Audio. Phase and Polarity take on 2 different meanings. As both speakers are in phase together. But both can be in either positive or negative, Absolute Polarity. And nobody thought about the, Microphone Diaphragms! It's like they are all a bunch of lamebrain audio hillbillies who cannot think. I mean what happened to them? Was it their college degree or the mathematical formulas? That they could get this concept that totally wrong? I mean they all flunk! This includes, numerous legendary, studio equipment design guys. Everybody knows. More than one guy I've approached. And I think they are a bit dumbfounded. And feel sort of stupid. Along with their gold and platinum records. As it's easy, apparently. To get this wrong at the highest levels of Electrical Engineers and Acoustic Engineers. It's kind of funny but not exactly. As I consider this to be the Biggest Audio FUCK UP. In Pro Audio History! As nobody could think this through except myself and JBL. I first heard the 4310 in 1968 when I was only 12 years old. But I had grown up already in studios like Motown. And United Sound Systems Studios in Detroit. My dad produced a bunch of stuff. And I got to sit in the control room starting at age 7. And so I got real fucking good at this. At a very early age. Like, write a book, age. One day. And being able to think through the process. I realize how much sense this makes. And those ignorant people that said they don't want any out of phase anything! They are like trying to tell your doctor. What kind of scalpel you want your doctor to use. To remove your appendix. And it doesn't work well that way. You chose the wrong scalpel.. And your recovery time will be extended by an additional 3 months. So you will be out for a total of 6 months. And that really wouldn't work out. And so flipped the polarity on both of your speakers. At the input to the speaker. Not the input to the amplifier. Such as if you have, what we refer to as: Self Powered, speakers? The kind you have to plug into an electrical wall outlet. And then plug the speaker into your stereo,, line level/low level, output. Because the speakers have the power amplifiers built into the speaker box. Usually 2 amplifiers. One for the tweeter and one for the woofer. And you have to remove both. With a screwdriver. And you will need a soldering iron. To flip the connections on both your woofers and both tweeters. Then screw them back into the box snugly. Do not over torque. Not a death grip but snug. And take another listen to your favorite recordings. You can thank me later. Yes this free little fix. Changes lives and makes people happy. Give it a try. RemyRAD
