The JBL Stage A130 measures and performs better than speakers costing over $1,000+, these really are giant killers. Typically can be found for $180 but even at full MSRP of $300 they still can't be beat. Goes to show when a company like JBL that KNOWS what they are doing a great speaker can be done without a huge price tag. High quality audio doesn't have to be expensive, many of these pretentious snake brands just want you to think so.

The JBL team must be like a top level sport team. The signature, and technicalities of the speaker make it maximum performance for it's price point. No gimmicks. Just good expertise resulting in great engineering.

great review, how is the sound barrier material inside ? maybe change it out with some no rez or high quality stuff ?
@iowaudioreviews
@iowaudioreviews 3 жыл бұрын
Its typical poly stuff, I'd say its ok. Its a tuff decision to mess with these because out of the box they measure and perform very well. Better than some speakers like B&W 607 coasting way more. I'll probably add a brace on the inside, some acoustic foam (no rez is too expensive and not necessary for these), and upgrade the xover components. But I'm not really expecting it to make much difference with these. The improvement is more noticeable when correcting speakers that have lots of issue's.

The only problem is, according to Erin’s audio corner, they “don’t measure that well”. But according to ASR, they measure decent enough. It’d be nice to get some NFS measurements from another batch to see if there’s any consistency in the data.

I have a pair of these I bought in 2020 for $189.00, and I'm driving these with a Denon PMA-600NE integrated amp, which is pre-amped with an Ayima A3 Tube Pro with 5654 mil spec tubes. I'm pretty happy with this set up, yet I have to agree with you on the banana plug issue, and I'm using 14 gauge speaker wire with Crutchfield plugs. I do have some $600 bookshelf speakers that will remain nameless. Are the more expensive speakers nicer? Yeah. Do they sound nicer? Well, it's comparing apples to oranges, really. The JBL Stages are way less sensitive and 6 ohm. I actually prefer the A130s (I can't help it). I'm actually thinking of buying the JBL L52s as they're 4 ohm. I think my ears prefer lower ohm, tougher to drive speakers. Why not? I've got the juice for 'em. Great review, by the way.

At only 86db sensitivity, would a small dac/amp like the loxjie a30 with a sub be enough to get the most out of this? Or maybe an old AVR to use the high pass filter with a subwoofer

I powered these with the SMSL SA300 in testing and it had plenty of power to drive these in a bedroom sized area maybe even a bit bigger. I agree if you want further control a used reciever with LFE is a great option to pair a sub at about 80hz.

Hey man, tks for your time doing that. I´ve just bought a pair of these speakers. Did you have done the crossover parts mod? Do you recommend keep the capacitors values or would change those too? Would you recommend the specs of new parts? I can change this by myself but don´t know much about parts names or specs. Tks so much. Best regards.

This is just my opinion. I've become a big fan of DSP (digital signal processing) and prefer to use it along with EQ to improve or correct a speaker in any room you use it in. I'm not aware of any improved xover designs as the stock ones are decent and the speaker already performs quite well out of the box. It does suffer from a little bix resonance so a little bracing inside could help. But the room and position you place them will effect them the most. I highly recommend getting a calibrated mic like the UMM-6 $70 on PartsExpress and use the free REW measurement software to measure your system in the space it will be used. This will allow you to look at a basic frequency response graph so you can see where corrections can be made with equalizer software like Equalizer APO. It may seem complicated but really isn't, its also much cheaper and easier than taking a speaker apart and messing with the xover. Some speakers that are way outta wack may need this but I don't think the Stage A130 need it. You can also use this equipment to correct other setups around the house or if you move the speakers to a different area or different room. I really need to make a video of this process sorry. I think Joe N Tell did one 🤔.

More similar than they are opposite of each other. I have both and was expecting a little more difference. JBL has tighter, more focused, and deeper bass. High end needs some slight taming ( -3db 16k on an eq), where the sonys are bright but not fatiguing by default. Similar soundstage with the Sonys having this X factor of air that I like, but I'd say the JBL is objectively the more well rounded speaker. At $180 sale price, the JBLs are still a fun AB alternative to the Sonys, but no way at $300, especially if looking for a truly different speaker.

Does the treble on these sound extended when listening? Not brightness, but extension. Thanks for any comments
@iowaudioreviews
@iowaudioreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but in a good way. I'd say detail even in the upper end of treble that some music does have 15khz to 18khz is clean and articulate. I've never been a fan of metal domes BUT JBL proves here when done right with a well engineered wave guide they can be very pleasing. Because of their low distortion these speakers remain surprisingly friendly even when turned up. This may relate to how well they take power and get loud without screeming at you and losing composure. I power mine with a Harman Kardon HK3490 which put about 150w into these and they take enough for me to throw the towel in. Here the ASR link, I know measurements are only part of the story but these speakers measure WAY above their price and far more expensive competitors. www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/jbl-stage-a130-review-speaker.18260/

In my expierence its a bad thing to have ports in fullrange speakers that are in a direct path with the back of the woofer it makes the midbass and a few midrange/highrange tones bumpy, especially if they are close to a wall (on a desk etc etc) Making it harder to set them up correctly. (i always try to avoid such designs when building my speakers) Iam wondering if you had any trouble setting these up corretly in a room with a little or no sound treatment Seems like these need to be further of the wall than floor standers with back ports that are not in a such close range direct path with the woofer I also like front ports more, the only disadvantage i sometimes hear with front ports is that it has a smaller sweetspot making them a bad choice for 2.1 setup in a room with 3 listening positions or more (example: livingroom infront of the tv) In certain setups i prefer backports more for better spread depends if iam listening alone or in a group setting Anyway thanks for the review (not that iam gonna buy these just being curious)

I have the studio version of these, and like them very much. They call these "bookshelf speakers", but you need to make sure the port on the back has plenty of room to "breathe" so air pressure won't restrict the woofers.. I also have the 10" down-firing subwoofer, and they sound very good together. Mine have controls on the back and built-in amps, and certainly were not budget speakers, and the woofers are black. The horns do have a wide "sweet spot". Then again, they are on my media table feet from where I sit. The main speaker monitors have 56 watts each of built-in power, and the sub has 200 watts.
