I bought the 570s and 580s during the holiday sales with the thought of auditioning the 570s for yuks then sending them back, but I sent these back and kept the 570s. Had the same issue you had with the 580s - had to keep turning them up and up and up to get them to sound smooth and balanced. In the end it was just too loud to be practical for everyday listening. Sounded great though. I have a pretty big space but maybe they need more room to sound right. The 570s on the other hand are pretty amazing speakers for what I paid for them ($400/pr). Plenty loud when they need to be but able to resolve a lot of detail and sound balanced and satisfying at lower volumes. They’ve put to rest my tendency to want to horse-trade speakers (for now).

I own these and have been listening to them for over a month now. Bought them on sale in November. IMHO they can reproduce tone very well. They are finicky, which I didn’t expect with horns. But when you get them right the tone and space is great! Not halo-graphic but pure. To those that play or have heard someone play an instrument, these can fill that void. They throw sound about with ease. They are not analytical but they are at the same time. I thoroughly enjoy the tone and presentation of the 580’s. The sound of brass, wind, vocals and acoustic for better my Elac’s. Going with your “vision of sound” the Elacs place and separate better, no doubt. But in going so they loose the tone IMHO. Love them both but very impressed either 580’s. It’s a spotted flood light vs a shop light. Running Emotiva ERC 2 AES/EBU to Schitt Modious , Schitt Freya +, PS Audio Stellar 300. All balanced connectors. Love your vids, thanks for all you do!

Bought a pair of 580s during the sale, along with a pair of 530s, a pair of 550P subs and a 520C. Figured I'd just go all in. Incredibly, the JBL Studio 5 series were the ones my wife MOST liked the look of out of these, Infinity, Jamo and KEFs so it worked out well for both of us. She's a damn fine lady. They're the only speaker line I actually like with the grill on more than grill off. I outfitted an entire 5.2 home theater for $1600 during that sale, then threw two extra Micca MB42Xs as rears to make it 7.2 (still debating if I want to move them to front heights). Other than JBL taking FOREVER to ship the 530s and 550s, I couldn't be happier. I originally only did the 530s and 520, but then decided screw it I'm going all in and I'm so glad I did. The 580s are BEASTS. I never even missed the sub while I was waiting for them to arrive. I don't think you could do better for the money. Hell, I'd be happy with the 580s and 530s only for $1600, never mind the two subs and center. For the price, you cannot possibly do better. At full price, ehhhhhh, you could do better but not a lot better. I will say that the 580s really benefit from being put on risers unless you're sitting ultra low to the ground. My seating area is much lower than most couches and I still needed to raise them. I know the tweeter at ear level is the base line, but these really need the space between the tweeter and the top driver to be at ear level. I built 5" risers, then leveled them out with the built in screw down levelers, which are incredibly useful. I have them toed in so the tweeter is "aiming" just outside of the main listening position and again, that is the wheelhouse. Direct to the MLP is overwhelming. I'm also about 10 feet from them, which helps. I spent way more than I wanted to during that sale, but I'm glad I did. The 580s, at that sale price, are the best speaker value you could ever hope to get. Easily. I would also highly recommend the 550P subs. They wouldn't do you any good Zeos, but anyone who needs small form factor and sealed, they're beasts. I got lucky in that the sub crawl put the two subs on opposing walls, right where my surrounds are in the home theater so I just built a 550P and 530 surround stack. I don't have the room for it now, but in the future if they have that sale, I'm going to go fully insane and put a third 580 as a center and grab some 570s for surrounds.

@Z Reviews you might as well do a surround sound review with the whole set. There’s a diagram in the manual and everything for how you’re “supposed” to set them up. I don’t do Patreon but I’ll make an exception so you don’t have to move back into that apartment

If you're after accuracy and you're using a studio quality sub or two, there is no need for the 590's. You should achieve higher fidelity with the 580's 6.5" midbass drivers. I imagine the 580's render a more favorable mid range at the crossover point with better holographic like imaging and soundstaging in a way the 590's might not resolve because of the beaming effect of their larger diameter 8" woofer. Granted the 590's---like the rest of the Studio 500 Series---utilize a relatively low crossover point (1.5 kHz), they are still within the range of beaming with a shallow 12db/octave slope. When a speaker is "beaming", the reflected sounds have a very different frequency response or "tone" to the direct sound. This is alleviated with a narrower driver or lowered crossover point with steeper slope. The 590's are a little more efficient and possibly play lower in frequency than the 580's with less distortion at volume but that pretty much gets tossed out the window with subwoofers actively crossed at 100Hz with a higher order LR 24db/octave slope. This scenario substantially reduces THD and more importantly, IMD, which allows the 6.5" midbass drivers to open up the magic even further as they focus on the musical spectrum for which they were designed to excel---the lower midrange and upper mid-bass. Now, block the ports from the inside. Why the inside? Blocking the port from the inside reduces internal enclosure volume, which will increase Qtc of the now sealed bass reflex speaker system, thereby, reducing mid-bass rolloff. Why block the ports? Blocking the ports reduces IMD (i.e. port resonance, audible enclosure resonance, etc), which will improve the clarity of the critical midrange, increase power handling, and substantially reduce group delay effects that occur with ported speakers and subwoofer integration. Let's face it. With subwoofers, we no longer need the deeper bass extension (f3) of a bass reflex speaker. Lastly, place them on solid stands to effectively improve the overall sound experience by centering your ear between the top midrange driver and the throat of the horn. I imagine the 580's are the sweet spot in the 500 series lineup with better dynamic range and lower distortion at higher volume levels than the 570's, while still maintaining their soundstage and holographic like imaging, especially if one has the budget for good subwoofers---sealed for small to medium sized rooms to take advantage of room gain and ported for larger open spaces, like Z's great room. PRO TIP: stagger your subs both vertically and horizontally in relation to the room dimension, yet keep them within coupling proximity center of your L and R speakers to achieve a smoother frequency response curve. This minimizes the effect of room modes while also minimizing group delay, which destroys bass articulation. This setup also lowers distortion by increasing dynamic range due to the coupling phenomenon (+3db), and adds greater stereo imaging. 💯 Interestingly, the 580's are on sale right now at JBL for $299 each (09/28/22). I cannot imagine a better HiFi value in consumer or even DIY speakers at the moment. Toss in two Studio 550p or 560p subwoofers (or the like), and you'd have to spend over $5,000 on audiophile tower speakers to get slightly better sound reproduction in most living rooms. At that point, investing in room treatment and setup knowledge would likely do you more good.

Just ordered the 580s for $700/pair. They join my 590s and 520c. Only need to get my SVS subs to complete the system.

I got my 580's earlier last year when you called them out for $600 a pair. Money well spent. In my medium to medium/large, weird shaped room, I do like music louder than I can listen to when there are people around.. But I don't think that they sound bad quiet. I use them for 95% movies, anyway. Sound stage and overall presentation is wonderful. Once or twice, I've felt that a sound comes from directly beside me! I stand them on a pair of cheap, 12" Dayton subs, you know, to get the tweeters up above my ear. I did adjust the feet to lean them forward a tiny bit, since they tower over me. No problems with stability. I also toe them in just a little. Basically so the outer sides are parallel to the side walls. (Spoiler, the subs are not as good as the speakers, but I let them do a bit and it helps.) I'm still powering them with my SMSL AD18 and it seems to do very well. I did drag out my Denafrips Venus and Audiovalve Solaris, but the Solaris doesn't have enough power to wake up the 580s, to my ear. Either that or the ~$145 AD18 is just as good as a $9k stack and everyone should buy one. (In the Solaris' defense, it is a headphone amp first. In OTL mode, it drives my LCD-4 to very high volume at 2.5 out of 11.)

Grrreat review Z. Liked what you said about room size vs speaker size. I would love the 590's but my room of 25L x 15W x 6.5 ceilings of a listening distance of 10', I think the 590's would be over kill. At almost 50" tall those speakers would be over half the distance of the drop ceiling height, but those 580's may be Goldielocks, "Just Right" (?) and with a tube amp...Mmm. Curious where you save all your music. I love that you use your TV as your music interface. How the hell do you do that? Where do you save your files? NAS? Congrats on the new home. Beautiful. I think you should do a mad science hour and build some really nice stands for those tube amps instead of just blocks. I don’t know if your going to keep them but you’ll get another pair even if your just borrowing those. I really like the way they look infront of the fireplace behind the speakers.

The Studio line looks very interesting. But I found to my chagrin, that JBL does not offer ANY home speakers in Europe at all... anymore? Only the cheapo BT and the party ones. Leaves me with my pair of Control Ones for now.

9:36 "the frequency response changes depending on volume" I think that's what Denon's dynamic EQ thing does. Boosts the bass when quiet but slowly takes the boost away as volume increases?

Yo Z-- I bought the 520's because of your review a couple years ago. I found they are best for near-field listening (at least in my opinion), do you find that the 590's are better suited for 2 channel listening from afar? Love your reviews bro!

Are these speakers equivalent to the Stage 180's? Similarly, are the 590's equivalent to the Stage A190's? Love JBL speakers, but the Studio range does not seem to be available anywhere anymore. Please advise, or, even better, feature the Stage A180's and A190's on your channel. If they perform the same, good, because they are still available on-line.

Love my 590s that I got for $1000. Just got the 520c for $140 but haven't hooked it up yet. Waiting for the 580s to go on sale for sub-$600 a pair. I tried my friend's 570s and they sound great, but they aren't tall enough to reach over my couch, and just look too small. So I'm going for the 580s which I heard a couple years ago at my friend's house.

I'd love for you to check out my wharfedale pi 30 towers. Got em free as a curb find. Reach down to 30 Hz, smooth silk dome, Kevlar cones give good weight. They don't have the fast attack or paper cones or Klipsch speakers but still nice.

I love to watch Cobra Kai my dad,my brother and I have been watching it for a while and it's awesome. We watch it in the living room on the hiesens smart tv.the ampe that we are using is a Sony home theater. the ampe is put in surround mode. The speakers that we are using for the front is two Fisher speakers and for the back is two Sony speaker casees that have new woofers and tweeters in them and they sound awesome

wtf i literally felt the rumble in the beginning using my lsr305s. I can only imagine how infinitely better it was actually hearing it.

On Black Friday I bought 3 yes I said three 590's for my fronts and I bought two 530s for my son for his computer but he said they won't fit on his desk so I took them back for the movie theater then my wife left the house and 3 days later I got divorce papers served to me. Would I buy them again hell yes all 5 speakers less than $1,700 hell yes and divorced.( just means more money more money for me) if anyone is in the brink of getting a divorce by these speakers!!!!!!! With Emotiva's ( 200 watts per Channel baby cake) you have to have the house to yourself.

I've ended up splitting the drivers in mine, I think they sounded better after that. But I never get close to pushing mine, -19db on my 120watt / channel receiver max. And I bought them for AUD $800 a pair 😎

I wonder why JBL opted not to implement a 2.5 way crossover in the 580 and even in the 570, as I'm reading they did in the 590. Is there no benefit for some reason? A 2.5 way can be as simple (and as cheap) as hanging a large coil on the lower mid-woofer, assuming the two are wired in parallel. My understanding is with two mid-woofers playing the same freq range up into the crossover region, a blurred image will result. The great thing about 2.5 way crossovers is the lower midrange and midbass has serious authority with a very full and rich sound due to the coupling effect. Many crossover designers will roll off the mids from the bottom mid-woofer in this TMM design because there are lobeing issues or some sort of destructive frequency interaction that occurs (phase cancelation perhaps?) if not implemented.

The question of the century for these speakers, is if you already have subs, which speakers do you get? Are the 570s enough? Are the 590s then overkill? Are the 580s perfect?

You have the rest of the line - how can you leave the 550p sub out? See what one or two of them do to the 530’s and 70’s. I have 2 and they we’re easy to integrate with the 530’s since they are voice matched and make one sweet package.

I bought a pair of the studio 530 and 580 plus the center channel for home theatre. was wondering if anyone could give me recs on what receiver to get. This will be my first home theatre setup. i wouldn't need an amp or anything else with the receiver, would I? any help would be appreciated. I looked at some forums and saw people recommend the denon x1500H which is discontinued. Would the x1600H work?

We don't get these speakers in Australia either, the towers we do get have crazy import fees. Sony towers are literally five times the price down here. You go into a home theatre shop and it's soundbars everywhere... hurts my soul.

Got the 530’s, 570’s, 580’s and will get the 590’s down the road. Z was right on all fronts. These 5 series JBL’s are ridiculous for tonal value and listening satisfaction in real world set ups. Behringer A800 amps make these babies sing thru my Marantz 5014 as a pre amp.

Great left and right speakers, but JBL doesn't offer a center speaker worthy of them. As you've always said, Zeos, get a center that's as good or better than your left and right, assuming you're going to get a center. I figure just any center isn't going to have that JBL sound signature.
