"I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday" is one of the most poignant lines in any song ever, made all the more so by the fact that this song was released after Janis Joplin had died.

Merle Haggard - I'd trade all my tomorrows 1965. It is a line she shouldn't have repeated unfortunately. Its is why she is no longer with us.

@@whaymeyeevil Kris Kristofferson did write it but he said himselfJanis made it hers. I usually prefer the artist who wrote a song to sing it however in this case I make an exception. She was a beautiful soul. Kris Kristofferson is a song writing legend. 👍

Sometimes, it can be hard to know if reactions on KZfaq are authentic or just someone putting on for the camera. Seeing the smile that came across your face as Janis started to sing makes it obvious that you are for real. 👍 It’s fun watching someone who truly loves music discovering some of the best made. I was a young girl back in the late 1960s. Janis and Jimi Hendrix were good friends and a lot of us were on top of the world listening to the best music ever. I think there are two sorts of folks in this world, those who don't like Janis and those who really love her and her music. Hi JBL, I believe you would agree with me that, in the modern era of popular music (1955 - 2020), Janis Joplin joins Karen Carpenter as possibly the 2 most original female American singers ever. Their voices are instantly identifiable and connect with the listener on many emotional levels. Truly two American legends. Giants taken from us far to soon. I am old enough to remember them their first time around(with The Holding Company and Richard C respectively) and Lord, do I miss 'em. Great video!! Sir, you recognize greatness. @@paphinphan Complete agreement on Patsy Cline also being recognized on her "Legendary Female American Singer" status. There is Ella F, Aretha F and Billie H as well. I guess what I am trying to convey is that Karen and Janis were unique for their time. These other great singers we're the greatest among their peers. In there times, and for all time. But I don't separate them from there contemporaries in quite the same way as I do with Janis and Karen. In their time, there was no one like Janis Joplin and Karen Carpenter. Hence, the 'Unique' intangible. Just one guys opinion. RNB

Awesome!! Fabulous redition of Kris Kristofferson's amazing song. He was an amazing poet and songwriter. They were lovers for a short while, and apparently when he heard that recording he said "that's her song now". Listen to him singing "Sunday Morning Coming Down", that's another poetic story I think you'd love. Great reaction, thank you!

I think when she says "freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose", is in a sense that you are only really free when you don't have anything tying you down, I think that's why on the Beatles song "Free as a Bird" there's a part on the lyrics that says "free as bird is the next best thing to be" because like is good to be free but it's better to have things you can't afford to lose, things that matter to you. Great reaction as always, you should check out another Janis song called Maybe, it's amazing. Cheers from Brazil!

I have been so fortunate in my 66 years so far. I grew up with (and still enjoy) the best music - Joe Cocker, Janis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Led Zepellin, The band, the list of genuinely talented performers goes on. And now I get to watch and listen to a new generation reacting to those same people. Please continue with your honesty and enjoyment of my life's soundtrack.

You are so correct. Hey, I really enjoy your reactions to the songs you play. They are thoughtful and one can see that the music really affects you (and I personally really appreciate the fact that you don't curse when you're talking about the songs). I got to see Janis three times back in the day, and she moved me then and still moves me today. I suggest that you listen to "Down on Me", one of my all-time favorite songs by her. Might I also suggest two other songs, one because of of your depth of feeling and one because of what we are going through today. The first is "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian and the second is "Trouble Every Day" by The Mothers of Invention. It should be the anthem of the Movement today.

I have probably listened to this song hundreds of times since I first heard it, which was when she first released it. Every time is like the first, just overwhelms the listener with Janis' voice combined with those Kristofferson lyrics. I think this is the best Janis Joplin ever sang. Great. In Don McLean's song, "American Pie" it's her death that he's singing about in the lines, "I met a girl who sang the blues... and I asked her for some happy news... but she just smiled and turned away..."

the actual bajmahal Don McLean has never made such a statement; in fact, he intentionally avoids discussing the meaning behind the lyrics, except for the reference to Buddy Holly. McLean said, “As you can imagine, over the years I've been asked many times to discuss and explain my song 'American Pie,'" McLean wrote in an open letter to fans in 1993. "I have never discussed the lyrics, but have admitted to the [Buddy] Holly reference in the opening stanzas. I dedicated the album American Pie to Buddy Holly as well in order to connect the entire statement to Holly in hopes of bringing about an interest in him, which subsequently did occur... You will find many 'interpretations' of my lyrics but none of them by me. Isn't this fun? I saw Janis in concert in 1969 at the Baltimore Civic Center. She was a great performer and she was so funny. She always had a bottle of Southern Comfort on the stage with her and Southern Comfort liked all the free publicity so much that they gave her with a lynx coat

In her time she was completely unique...but in the end she influenced the greatest rock singers of the 70s. The imperfections of her voice when she approached higher notes opened the door for many singers who would have never believed in themselves. She proved that heart, not perfection was the key to vocal greatness.

She meant that people are imprisoned by their fear of losing whatever they have. When there’s nothing left to lose there’s nothing left to fear. Only then can a person truly be free.
