SUPERTRAMP: The Story So Far

begins with a quite interesting and thorough band documentary, from sources as diverse as talk shows, formal interviews, and what seems to be casual band discussions. Then what follow is live footage. The shows themselves are quite good, with only minor sloppy playing, and decent sound quality (though drums are way too low in the mix!). The production is good, and the videos in the bonus features are alright as well. The Supertramp fans will be really eager to watch this, and hearing about a band's history is only interesting for huge fans of that band.

For me, Crime of the Century is one of the most outstanding recordings of all time. There are many moments on this album that send shivers down my spine, an occurrence that I like to call an 'eargasm'. There are not many other bands that do that to me.

Bob Siebenberg is a hell of a drummer with such a classy touch. I´ve been a drummer for 30+ years and he is and he will always be one of my favourite drummers. I´ve learned a lot from him. Thanks Bob!

I agree totally guys, the band was so great live on top of the great success in the studio. An enormous part of that, was Bob on drums and Dougie Thompson on bass. Live they were beyond even the Pink Floyd live because of these two rhythm powerhouses!!! The power chords were just so pure and powerful that I would give almost anything to see and hear that again.

Taken near where it was recorded at Caribou Ranch, Nederland CO, 13 miles west of Boulder. The band's crew dragged the grand piano to the top of Lake Eldora Ski Mountain and covered it with snow. Iconic cover to an amazing album!

Fully agree. Songwriting is outstanding. Musically gifted. Great voice and lyrics. Often overlooked. They are underrated. A staple of the soundtrack of my life. I’m sure it was for millions of others, as they were a fixture on FM radio for 30 years. Music for road trips, mornings after an all nighter, a band to listen to with headphones, or to make love to.

It never fails. You get that much talent concentrated in such a tight space, it just implodes. Too bad really. This band could’ve made many more incredible albums together. But I’m glad we got what we did.

A Major piece in the soundtrack of the lives of teens/twenties/thirties in the 70s and 80s....and I still enjoy it as much now in my 60s.....thanks for al the great music and memories!

The use of so many different chords to change the mood, dynamics and feel of their superbly crafted songs is really great with the harmony of their voices, the drums and amazing sax. They haven't received anywhere near the recognition they so richly deserve. Keeping together and being so professional for the sake of the quality of the songs is an achievement in itself. They must be put into the rock and roll hall of fame. So many other bands have entered that aren't a patch on Supertramp.

I absolutely love the duality of Roger and Rick. Their approach seems to be completely different and unique. Musically they add much to each others writing and performance. The last Germany performance is spectacular and beautifully crafted.

Saw the twice. Once in a theater on the Crime of the Century tour and then in an arena for the Even in the Quietest Moments tour. Both were the best sounding shows I had ever seen live. Even though Breakfast in America became the most popular album, I didn’t like it as much as Crisis, Crime and Quietest Moments. I will never forget when they first played Fools Overture live. Great band. Nothing like this anymore. Glad I lived when I did. Thanks guys!

Roger lived in this small norcal town for some years and what a pleasure to have him go into a pub and play a few songs, no one bothered him here--one time i bought a used blank cassette, and it was 90 minutes of him and his mates just playing, imagine how cool it was when i realized what i was listening to

If Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies didn’t constantly treat each other like they didn’t exist, then I’m sure Supertramp could have lasted longer after Breakfast In America came out.

SO much talent and so many amazing songs. Breakfast in America is in my top 5 albums of all time. Just love it so. It's too bad this group couldn't have stayed together .......the combo of Davies/Hodgson was remarkable. Neither as good without the other.

I own all their albums but missed my last chance to see them live. I did get in the front row of one of Roger's concerts in St. Paul. How fun to sing along every word of every song!

Saw Supertramp in Philly in ’83 at the Spectrum. One of my 10 best rock concerts , though we missed the first half hour or so. Band supposedly waited to take the stage to allow fans to arrive in ridiculously bad traffic. The Eagles had a preseason football game across the street the same night. Had to park near the I-95 on-ramp and walk to the arena. Great, unforgettable show!!!

While working at A&M Canada I was fortunate enough to meet Supertramp both with and without Roger who I also meet at a meet and greet as a solo artist.These guys are great people ,there band,manager and roadies.Great shows and great memories.

They were my first concert. Maybe 1975? Four of us young’uns, maybe 16 yrs old, we paid ten dollars cash to a doorman and got in. In retrospect the whole event was so overwhelming for my young mind I didnt appreciate the show quite as well as I wish.

Great video btw - The likes of 'The Logical Song' and 'Breakfast in America' were pure Roger, but then you would be treated to Rick's 'Bloody Well Right' and 'From Now On' etc - Supertramp, the Glory Years - Never to be repeated!

Here's my opinion, this is the most intelligent band of all time , all of them has a special creativity, the construction of every song are so intelligent they know the exact moment to do the guitar solo, the piano solo , saxophone , the drums , the bass , the 2 voices , GOD!!!

Graduated high school in 1983 with an A.M. frequency on a transistor radio. Their chemistry and genius talent was truly amazing, their music is the soundtrack of my youth. Fourteen years is a long time for anything let alone that arena, near 40 years later I enjoy it all on a deeper level and appreciate their talents, characters and contributions to my life journey every time even more!

My senior year, class of 1976, I got my first loan from Retail Clerks Credit Union … I bought Bose 901 series 3. Also a Sansui 8080 DB Tuner And a Technics turn table… Boston, Kansas and soon Supertramp we’re the BEST!!!! I sure I still that system!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss it

I was only 13 when Crime of the Century found me in 1977 & soon bought the two following albums which I played to death in spite of most kids my age being into punk or disco . It was a very exiting day when I first heard Breakfast & loved it to bits but for some reason I’ve never been inspired by the Paris album or one single live bit of footage ! I’m forever greatful though for the impact the lyrics had upon my take on the ‘ grown up world ‘ as a nipper . ( Supertramp & Zappas’ first two albums which I’d gained at the same time as Crime ) 😃❤️👍

The sax playing on logical song really stood out and was very complex and brilliantly played and his professional way of playing through a slight blunder was so well done that he just carried on as if nothing happened. The saxes together really makes Supertramp stand out and be different, original and brilliant but the pressure to do follow ups to crime of the century and breakfast in america must be hard to cope with but to play such a brilliant show so well really takes some doing and they really are a great supergroup and i really enjoyed listening now on my 63rd birthday as this brings back happy memories in the late 1970s entertaining 2 sweet swiss au pair girls in Wimbledon😂❤

Absolutely killer in Bloody Well Right. Hodgson may be more known for the voice, the wurlitzer and the 12-string, but he is a very good electric guitarist...always such tasteful parts esp. on Davies' songs. They knew things were splitting up but love how on stage they are all in the zone as performers, clearly enjoying themselves. I've heard both Hodgson and Davies' say how touring was "easier" and the enjoyable part (interesting as its the opposite of many other bands). Course, who couldnt enjoy being in such a band of incredibly talented musicians, all 5.

I met my wife of 43 years listening to Crime of the century and Supertramp has been a huge contributor to the soundtrack of my life They played in Kelowna in 2011 and was freaked out they used the star screen with the crime of century album cover jail bars as the did in Toronto in 1983 ❤

In my mind, I was thinking about seeing this tour when I was a teenager - 17, I think... made the trip from Montreal to Toronto to see it w/ my cousin, who was a couple yrs older... we were so young, so stoned .. crowd was wild .. everyone looking at the GIANT screen as the hat started flowing down to earth and the stage lit up!.. and then, 14:22, the screen says 'TORONTO, 1983' .. THIS WAS THE SHOW!.. Wow :)

If Rick and rodger could just put thier issues aside and reconcile they could reform the band. Everyone is still here and to be honest that would be a HUGE reunion tour and probably would sell out at every single stop they came to. I know if they hit Milwaukee wisconsin I don't care what my wife says I would be there to see it.

@@georgeshaw8925 This comment is jazzy. Let me elaborate on it anyway. They say play in a band or play at a concert. In actuality, it is work that members get paid to do. It can be difficult to do that work. Employees won't always get along. There will sometimes be friction. At other times, Roger will start crying and run off high up top onto the mountains where he will pout a lot, start looking down on everyone, and write his own songs. Yet, the whole idea is to take a boring orderly square and turn it into an interesting spontaneous circle. To do that requires friction, not getting along, lots of shouting, and throwing tantrums.

The best group, it was for me the sound I love immediatly, from their beginning. I'm french, from the south west. During the seventies, I was a teen, their sound went everywhere in the country. We loved definitly Supertramp.

I know I'm in the minority but I've always preferred Richard's darker songs to Roger's lighter songs. Love the contrast though. Great band.

Me too. Altough Roger wrote several great songs but I do not like the most of big hits of the band and a little bit "stupid " pop songs as Crazy. Rick is underrated and Roger's did everything in order to sell himself as a only 1 reason of Supertramp's' success. Unfortunatelly he could manipulate his fanbase( sect) with it. Rick Davies was Beethoven for me , while Roger is Mozart, but I always prefered Beethoven.

Of course Roger was a "hitmaker " but I have to say his best songs were never ranked on the charts . And just for your info the first and last US " hits " belonged to Rick ( Bloody well right and My kind of lady , or Cannonball after Roger"s departure ) .Cannonball was a big hit per example , it was no9 in US dance charts . Rick also wrote additional amazing songs as Rudy, Crime of the century, From now on , Downstream , Another man's women , etc. They aren"t " obscure " songs. Both songwriters were genius.

I still think that Famous Last Words, their final album with Roger, should have been a double-album set, the second following their 1980 live album, Paris. These plans were shelved after Rick and Roger disagreed as to the direction of the album, and I think the fuel crisis also played a part in making FLW a single album, as A&M believed marketing two double albums in a row would be expensive; this is also when you consider that Paris was initially supposed to have been a triple album (3 record) set. Among the original plans for FLW included having Rick's "Brother Where You Bound" and "Ever Open Door," both of which eventually appeared on Supertramp's 1985 album Brother Where You Bound, as well as those songs Roger wrote that later graced his 1984 solo debut In the Eye of the Storm, including "Hooked On a Problem" and "Had a Dream (Sleeping with the Enemy)."

When I first started dating my loved one 4 years ago… we had just made love and she asked me what music was playing in my head , as we are both huge music fans…. That’s right, I said SuperTramp,. 😮. Well as soon as I said it, I knew made a small mistake ….. well needless to say I had some explaining to do…. We are both children of the ‘60/70s…. She remembered Super Tramp, but it had been years since she heard them. So, I turned on my killer vintage Marantz stereo( which she loves), blasted some Super Tramp…and explained my way out of trouble and into her heart ❤️. I told her that after making love to her, my mind was sparkling like a SuperTramp song…. When she heard “give a little bit of your love to me”…. We looked at each other and knew we were right for each other. We still chuckle about how deep that foot went into my mouth, but we have never looked back… I have a wide range of music …. But maybe only a few bands can cause my mind to sparkle like SuperTramp …. And of course my special woman can top them all. True story….

I think in America, Breakfast was the best sounding. Are you overseas? Over here it was on A&M records, which was a standard pressing affair until Breakfast came out and the vinyl formulations were altered. Nearly all big label LP's, no matter who, were largely handled by CBS pressing plants. Aside from RCA, which had their own... But there were contenders all of a sudden. An audiophile release of Breakfast was available, then the others released by MFSL, BREAKFAST was released by their own label not MFSL. Also, at the time I would listen to albums I liked using phase cancelation, sometimes called "stereo difference" to dissect the production. BREAKFAST, was well produced regarding that, as everything was meticulously placed in the stereo sound stage with a light halo of ambient reverb, and no phasing errors. Those really stuck out as distortion in recordings that had that problem. Or ones that had off center mono sources. Taken apart like that, Breakfast held up well and sounded just like a live performance. The ones before had a less live sound and as Soundstage goes, certainly not bad, but like seeking a 3-d picture made up of several 2-d flat images. The images themselves would have depth and texture, where in the older productions, they were well-rendered 2-d images, or for the sake of this, individual mono recordings, assembled into the Soundstage. Every sound on Breakfast seemed to eminate from a stereo source, as in live.

I had tickets to see Rick Davies Supertramp back in '97, but they cancelled at the last minute. I got to see Roger in 2014 though, and that made up for it. I've avoided watching live Supertramp recordings until I could actually see the live. It's been a long wait and I'm not going to live forever, so here I am. Thanks for posting 'Total'. Great to see these guys at the height of their game.

Can I ask which concert was cancelled ? The tour in 1997 was very succesful in Europe , every concerts were in front of several thousends of people . I saw them in Hungary on this tour , they were great

@@Chordonblue The Gorge Amphitheatre was mentioned by road reports , cca.17.000 people ( in Aug of 1997 ). I saw them in Hungary, Europe in 1997 . For me it was the best concert I have ever seen.

I was living in Paris for the first time. I went with this lovely young woman, smoked a spliff, and I was so high that I never got the courage to ask her out again. We went home in the same train, and to this day I wonder how her life turned out. We were at that Paris Live show...

It doesn't really matter much, selection to the R&R HOF often has more to do with music industry politics than merit. I don't need an organization to validate whether a band is great or not.

Supertramp is the British Steely Dan. Their lyrics are quaint and cynical. They both try to capture the late 19/early 20th century dull greyness

The source of the live videos are from Live in Munich 1983 (Roger Hodgson's last show with Supertramp) and the Live At The CNE Toronto Television Special that same year that was simulcast on Toronto Rock Station Q107 and Global TV.

In my opinion, I think Supertramp had four great albums which are: Crime of the Century, Breakfast in America, Even in the Quietest Moments, and Crisis, What Crisis, in that order. They were easy to listen to all the way through...

Rick wrote his best songs on Crime of the Century... Asylum, Rudy and Crime of the Century is probably the best songs in the Supertramp Catalouge!

I love Supertramp. I have loved them since a friend introduced them to me when I was 14 in 1979. I've always been interested to find out much more about them, but it seems they are a band who had very normal individuals producing amazing music. There is no scandal, sex or drugs, just Rock and Roll. So therefore there is no "amazing" story to tell and nothing of real "interest", apart from 25 minutes of fairly normal interviews out of 80 minutes of footage in this "documentary", which is mostly made up of live shows. Don't get me wrong, I think that's great. Why does it always have to descend into drugs and debauchery? Why can't we just have five normal guys making amazing music? But it does seem to me that they are largely forgotten in the general music world, because sadly, in this world that we live in, you can't be quiet and brilliant... I hope they are happy and content with all of their achievements and their lives in general, because they deserve to be...

I associate supertramp with rodgers singing and songwriting. Without him the magic piece of the puzzle was gone forever.

I and a friend became band groupies when they toured around our area- Toronto, Buffalo New York and even went to see Roger solo here in Vancouver at a very small venue-all shows were well produced, sound extraordinaire. And yes each concert is a Journey of the mind. I took up Alto Sax with John Helliwell's multi instrument talents inspiring me. I also play piano, any musician can appreciate- their 'pure' sound without programmed tracks- Except for Fools Overture etc. Miss them much, still play their records.

'School' was always my favourite song, but loved to hear Rick and Roger singing 'Rudy' in the four or five 'Live' Concerts I went to. 'Another Man's Woman' would always be a highlight later. Ironically the crisis began during 'Crisis, what Crisis?' Very sad end.

I saw super tramp in the 1980s when they were touring for breakfast in america and they sounded fantastic. I wish I could see them again together and touring with michael hutches. I would go even in my wheelchair.

Saw them Live in San Diego 1979. Just an awesome show musically. No back up band just 3 hours of Supertramp. Tickets were $20.

I saw them in Vancouver on the same tour, August 11/79…last show they did that year in North America. They played outdoors at the end of a near perfect summer day. The show was every bit as goods as the weather.

Roger was the heartbeat of the band, when he left Supertramp died. Don't believe me, go watch some of his performances after he left. Close your eyes and your back in the old days!

Amazing interview with the two songwriters- they were different and they knew it. The band's song writing was prolific clear-eyed soulful magic, but their their days were numbered .Like all great art it must be grasped, realized, then relinquished...

I've been to one Supertramp concert...back in 2002 in LA...but also 5 or 6 Hodgson concerts....the first with Ringo and All Starr Band in vegas in 2001.

I followed Supertramp from their very first concert at the High School of Commerce Auditorium in Ottawa, Canada. Saw every concert in Ottawa and Montreal, QC. A British friend of mine had turned me on to Crime of the Century. Then purchased the self titled album and Indelibly Stamped. I have everything the band ever released. It's unfortunate that Canada receives such shant attention to the success of the band. They were more popular here than they were in the USA. They only became popular there with the release of Breakfast in America. Shame on you Roger and Rick. We helped to make the band the success that it was. I wish there was more on the creative process. Who are the songwriters? Who composes the other instrument's music? The instrumentation is so amazing. It's got that classical style, so much going on; changing rhythms, keys, multiple vocals, and the inclusion of horns always makes for so much musicality. And check it out, you can hear the words! Wow!

Scott Page really wore his mullet to the next level, as the 80s wore on that mullet just kept on growing, by the time he toured with pink floyd even David Gilmour had entered into mullet territory but David couldn’t hold a candle to Scotts barnet. 😆

Io amo entrambe le voci, la loro personalità e il loro talento, la loro profonda diversità, penso sia stata la loro differenza a farli grandi, infatti appena nel '83 Roger andò via, per trovare successo da solista, purtroppo, lo dico con tanto rammarico, nessuno dei due ebbe più tale folgorante success! Quindi per voler essere due "Primedonne", li abbiamo "persi" entrambi. Ma li amerò per sempre😢.
