Greetings! I am a Brazilian admirer of Jaco, I have few stories about Jaco, because unfortunately he died prematurely. I love his way of playing, as he has inspired bass players from all over the world to this day. Please tell me about the moments of friendship you had with Pastorius, did you have the opportunity to meet him when Jaco was an adult?

Yea, I saw them in Osaka on their Big Band Tour and it was magical, amazing chemistry and energy between the two. Toots thanked Jako for inviting him on the tour and It was kind of ok until Toots came out and sat on a stool and rocked the placed. After that it was 33 guys ripping their best solos all night and the crowd went wild...and Toots was the surprise star of the show...

+Jennifer Vincent happy a piece like this really demonstrates his ability to arrange. Jaco was a master arranger and it becomes easier to see why his family, his original choice of instrument all contribute to as masterful a player, a composer and an arranger, let alone one of the most innovative players in the genre of jazz, as Gil Evans or Duke Ellington. Miles for that matter. Man alive i screwed up my thumb playing this this morning. you know when you hit 50 and you jump on the kit without lots of warm up you can hurt yourself quite bad. all these old guys who still tour, I don't where they get the energy. I have to start warming up at 10AM if I want to play jazz by 2 in the afternoon. But with all that warm up you get other problems like carpal tunnel which is deadly to an instrumentalist as my self. I play some guitar and piano my self. Good to see Jaco has nice young people adore him for his playing. I will never forget the morning I was headed off to school and I heard that he had died the night before. Well to my generation, in a strange sort of way that was like our Hendrix dying. OK don't hate me for saying that anybody. It is a contextual thing. When I arrived at school some of my friends were quite glum about the whole thing. I guess that is the considered difference between a fan and a colleague. He does look happy though doesn't he?

+Bella, Yes he met somebody that cherished him... and that one amazing thing about Toots, you truly get the feeling that he loves and cherishes everybody. cross train vato. train you supporting muscles. all your muscles. ride a bike. walk. eat better. don't sit for hours in front of the tube. get up frequently and stretch from any sitting "activity" or in front of your kit. lots of breaks. you lose energy flow getting old because everything turns stiff and hard. if you want to keep playing, you have to stay loose and relaxed. yoga. all that. you know what you need to do . just do it. i am 62 and still playing 4 hour solo piano/vocal gigs, 5, 6 nights per week, I am exhausted by it, but i can still do it cuz i eat right, stretch, exercise. good luck. steve gadd is still playing in his 70's because he is taking care of his whole self.

A truly amazing clip. I came here from a Peggy Lee and Toots video...clicked on the thumbnail and was totally blown away. Toots, I happily, know something of him. Until 9 minutes and 9 seconds ago, I was not familiar with Mr. Pastorius and his muscianship, but may have heard him and was not aware of him by name. In any event, The young man in this video, sort of knows his way around a bass guitar(said in jest, with high, high respect). Jaco smiling as noted by others...who could not smile when in the company of that smiling, bespectacled, humble., harmonica, playing gift from God. Thank you Toots, and thank you Jaco. Jaco, I'm 73 and "discovered" and became an instant fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn a few years ago, after he had passed away. I just "discovered " you and became an instant fan. Man, my timing sucks:). Thank you gentlemen, for what you left behind and rest in peace.

Great piece of jazz history showing two of the greats at work. This kind of "conversational" improvisation is common in jazz. I think it's interesting that there seemed to be a few times where Toots would "say" something and Jaco was "at a loss for words". As awesome as Jaco was, he couldn't keep up with Toots. I'm not taking about speed. I'm talking about complexity. I would love to see Jaco play with Vic Wooten.

"I do not like the harp for the almost ever sqeaking sound" You obviously haven't heard many good harmonica players. Also, they generally refer to the chromatic harmonica as a "harmonica". They refer to the smaller diatonic harmonica as a "harp" when playing blues or pop/rock music. Toots was definitely a "harmonica" player.
