Similar problem, I removed the wire winding (counted the number of turns), rewound it for $8 worth of wire, and it works like new. It was a pretty easy fix.

Don’t forget about the generator safety rules: Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your portable generator. This is only a reminder. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. It is important to keep your children safe especially little ones. The portable generator can be hot during an operation. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the safety rules. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5eah5Zys6uypn0.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. It’s important to keep our little children safe as well. Make sure your little children are kept away from the generator at all times especially when it’s running. Hope this helps. It works well, though we prefer to use veggie oil in stead of water! - Same method can be applied to most tapered shaft applications, and is a common old mechanics trick for getting clutch pilot bearings out crankshafts.

With a armature like this, if the coil can be removed, used a heat gun to carefully soften the varnish and wood or plastic tools, pull out a desired length of wire (1 coil. ) Use a good brand of 5 min epoxy to seal the area of removed coil. Reinstall. Hook up wire, trim... If the coil cannot be removed, carefull unwinding as to avoid scratching the wire on core laminates, use tape to protect areas from abrading it, also to dam areas to re epoxy the coil area. With a light amount of epoxy used, it won't effect the balance. Remove the tape of all possible areas afterwards, as this doesn't have the proper insulation value, and might cause an issue if the coil gets hot...

I would still attempt to solder the wire on while protecting the coil. Possibly getting a hold on the wire tip with pliers and tugging left or right without damaging the coil and getting enough to put a dab of solder on the tip and getting a thick copper wire soldered to it protecting the coil with plastic and then when electrically correct hot gluing it into place so centrifugal force doesn't pull on the windings to short it out.

I think the rotor is fixable. When I work with enamel coated wire, I first burn the end to soften the enamel and anneal the copper. Then scrape off insulation. Tin the ends of the wires individually first, using solder, then twist and solder. Insulate and epoxy for mechanical strength. If you have to fish out a turn, it will still work fine. The hydraulic trick is amazing.

This is a good reason to check any equipment as soon as you buy it, so you can return it if it does not run as expected. I put an new piece of equipment into a program I call APM. I run it every day for a week and then every week for a month and then, every month for a year. After a year, I feel it meets its desired operation standard and if it breaks during this program it is still within the warranty period.
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 3 жыл бұрын
That is smart. Most breakdowns due to a manufacturing error or poor quality control do happen early on. Happens to me any time a buy a new computer. The first year is fought with multiple breakdowns. Once the parts are replaced under warranty it will last me 10 years without issue.

Just stumbled on your page. Interesting seeing a Predator generator repair. I'll have to remember the water trick, that would never have occurred to me. I bought an electric start 7Kw Predator in 2016. So far it is working fine but have only fired it up for quarterly testing. Buying one seems to have kept the power outrages at bay. Here in NH typically have a week long outage every few years. Supposedly Harbor Freight has gotten better and is now selling some spare parts. But I agree probably not cost effective since you seem to have access to lots of dead ones probably better to make a Frankenstein generator out of scrounged parts.

When you come across generators that have a large bolt you could cut down a bolt that fits and slot the cutoff end for a slotted screwdriver to screw the threads all the way in and still do the bolt on the end of the shaft with little to no chance of dan aging the threads of the bolt stud or the crankshaft.

Really appreciate the video, have an older model 4k that runs well, been neglected and bought it refurbished during a parking lot sale. I do believe the stator wire like yours has corroded and is toast or maybe o can heat it up and solder a new jumper in as a last ditch effort to make full power. After I freshened up the stator block, ground and checked all the connections you mentioned, it still fails to put out above 5V on each 120V outlet. Worst case scenario I make out like you did but the frame is toast, rusted severely from rotor bolt height down.

Unbury the wire end, unwrap 1 wrap on the wire and then repair as normal OR just solder to the end and then epoxy it all up in place with JB weld. It will insulate and provide a secure and heat resistant mechanical connection to secure the solder connection.

Electrical safety when using portable generators: Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your portable generator. That would be great! I have fixed them in the past, but was never satisfied with my soldering and end result (although they worked). Spinning at 3600 rpm, the repair needs to be good. Unfortunately, I have already used some of the parts on other equipment and pretty sure the rotor was recycled. Will double check. Otherwise will reach out on the next one. I get one or two like this a year.

@@jcondon1 Unless they have used an epoxy it's quite fixable, I would say. Lacquer it's fine. Personally I would rip about 7 cm (-+ 3 inches) of the wire from the rotor, than I would use a razor blade to scrape the laquer off and splice and solder a new wire in. After soldering it´s good practice to cover the wires with something to fix them in place and reduce material fatique (Cu really suffers from it). Only possible issue is balancing the rotor back up. Even an slight imbalance will shake the heck out of the bearings. In the past, all stacked wiring (transformers, rotors etc.) were dipped in thick shellac, later it was replaced with laquer. For the comutator connections an epoxy is used, but I would say that electrical silicone should work fine as well. (Maybe even ATC silicone; just don´t use the sanitary - acid curing - one)

That is exactly it. I have soldered them before and got them to work. But selling to someone does not make me comfortable. Especially since the rotor is spinning at 3600rpm. The slightest imperfection in the repair and it will break again.

Electrical safety when using generators: Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your portable generator. I find it incredible the number of comatose generators you find but not surprised you can repair most of them. At least you have a supply of good parts this time. I assumed there would be an unlimited supply of sick Y2K generators in my area but not so. When stuffing a cylinder with rope, be sure the piston is coming up on the compression stroke so that both valves are closed or a valve "could" be bent when applying rotation to the crank. Could a smaller diameter rod have been used to avoid removing the engine and using water? That water trick is VERY cool. Tnx for more good lessons.
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 3 жыл бұрын
Smaller rods would probably bend and get stuck. But if the rod was hard enough then it would probably work. I don’t know sure. I do set the piston in the compression stroke. That makes it safe for removing the rotor bolt. But torquing it back on rotates the engine the other way and will push on a valve. Was thinking about getting a piston stop, but not sure I like that idea any better.

@@jcondon1 Thanks for responding. With all your wrenching on small engines, I think you would find a 1/2" impact wrench VERY useful for removing rotor and flywheel nuts. But invest in a good one, not at Horrible Freight. Drill rod is more stiff and harder than cold rolled steel. If using a drill rod, apply reasonable pressure and then try a sharp rap on the bolt head with a hammer might shock it loose. Keep up the GREAT videos.

Jimmy, you need a 500 volt meggar for your tool box. The hand crank model is fine, and cheaper than the plug-in models, and of course, more portable. This will give you a resistance. Reading of the winding and field's insulation. Useful for determining failure due to high heat. Biddle, is the best name in meggars. I would check out ebay It's a diagnostic instrument made for what you do. We used a 1000 volt model at work, but our machines were higher voltage; they produced 40 mega watts for the Long Island Power grid....

@@jcondon1 yes, we used to do a yearly "annual inspection" and check all electrical, contacts on relays, pressure switches , etc. Biddle is the foremost name, they are made in England, or at least were. We would meggar the field, and stator, run a 10 minute test, take readings every minute, but that was due to the large amount of windings. This would be filed, and could paint a picture of wear on the machine Good for any device, especially where windings are involved; motors of all kinds, car alternators, vacuum cleaner motors, blender motors, etc. You seem like you'll put one to good use. Hi James. Very good video. I have a Predator 4550 which is only a couple years old. I haven't used it much, I pulled it out tonight to power the lights in my barn. The generator has two banks of 120v sockets each. The left set is not putting out much power and shows .9 volts on my meter. The right set of sockets is putting out a healthy 125v. Would you have any idea why this is happening? Than you very much. .

A golden rule of anything bought brand new, or even a refurb if it comes with a guarantee, is to run it regularly and reasonably often during its guarantee period. That way, if it's dead from the factory, or likely to fail through a manufacturing defect, you can root it out while it's still under guarantee. To be realistic, it's always a good idea to run machines of this nature on a regular basis because you can almost guarantee that if you don't, then on the one night/weekend/etc that you need it, it will let you down.
