This generator was listed over a month on Craigslist for $20. It was a bit of drive from me, but after watching it for over a month, decided to hop in the car and go get it. Not expecting much for $20.

Another outstanding class. I've Comme Ted in your tecumseh video, a 2005 tecumseh 11hp. I taped/ordered a breather tube, new air and fuel filter, new gas lines, new spark plug, cleaned the fuel plastic tank several times, sprayed the whole generator and washed, no ethanol gas, found a plastic covered torx10 screw just hidden- unscrewed that blew it out with carb cleaner and back. Cleaned the carb - all after watching many of your videos - and after several days of no starts to 30 seconds, it ran 1.5 hours with 1200w load and I'm pleased. THANKS, hopefully it'll crank successfully more.

I'm glad you said those Vanguard engines are good! I like them too, and 100% agree on the Mikuni carbs running lean, but also, there seems to be slight design variations between one Mikuni and and another, though they all seem to run lean. Spark plug gap also grossly affects running, and an apparent misfire can often be cured by closing the gap by a couple thou. My personal favourite generator out of the ones we have on hand is a 3.5kVA Stephill with a 9 horse Vanguard. Unless of course we're talking longer running outages, then it's either, the Lister-BKB 6kVA, or the Perkins-Stamford 32kVA, depending on anticipated demand. Yeah, we have a lot power outages! But, generators are also fun to work on, as well as keeping the lights on!

Those older Briggs Vanguards are truly power horses, and very reliable. I had a generator just like that, the only problem was everyone complained about how loud it was. I thought about making a muffler to quiet it down, but ended up selling it. I didn't care that it was loud, it was reliable and could run for hours with little maintenance. I probably logged over 1,000 hrs without malfunction, I ended up painting the metal laminations due to it rusting up, more cosmetic than anything. The only real pain was the filter cover would interfere with the side of the frame on the one I had.

I want to get a small electric powerwasher about 1200 PSI or so for jobs like this, and still have a larger gas one for bigger jobs. Thanks for the idea to use a plastic bag to cover the air intact the way you did, I probably would have just covered the outside with it, and then duct taped it. LOL! I like yours better. Great job James,as a tip for you, when drilling steel or even stainless steel it is better to use short bursts, rather than holding the trigger, this allows the bit to cool between drills! In other words , trigger on one second, trigger off one second, and repeat until the bit is through the metal.

Well done as always. I've seen the poor running and/or bogging when revving power equipment, even small quad engines, due to the slightest change in air/fuel ratio, with either really dirty air filters, or missing air filters. Many small engines are factory tuned to just the right amount of air/fuel. It's getting harder and harder to sell these small 3000-7500W traditional gas generators, as everyone wants the inverter gens now. And with the inverter gen market becoming so huge, (and cheap) these older gas generators have a much lower demand. It's great to save and bring these back to life though. And while the demand is lower, it's still there, for the right price. I'm guessing you can get about $250 on that unit. What do you think? Keep up the great work, and great videos!!

Runs like a champ, with exception of the wimpy fuses you can’t hurt this thing. My only complaint it the L14-20 amp plug. It’s not very common to come across these cords and adapters (yes Amazon has them). I’d wish the bumped it to a 30amp rating with 30amp twist lock then I could power my RV entirely. In a pinch I did the old tin foil wrap fuse and it held til I was able to get a new one.

I can't believe you haven't purchased a hydraulic lift table yet! My back would have given out a long time ago working on the floor.

I ran my whole house on that exact same model for years without issue, then I put in a new condensing boiler that was frequency fussy and would go into hard lockout if off by more than 1.5 hz. Never a single issue with the generator though, even in the winter.

stuck parts release with PB Blaster and hot tap water. avoid pressure washer on generator. damp rag and elbow grease saves your stator.

Wow fantastic purchase and fix. Glad you got the miss out of the engine. Was it just the filters or did you make a jet larger? Certainly runs great now. Thanks for the video.

With respect to the muffler, why not grab some hitemp exhaust/firebox black paint? It’d at least last long enough to get a few extra bucks at resale. Another good job, well done. 👏👏👏 👋👋👋 🇦🇺
