Ryobi Generator Blown Head Gasket - Fixed

This Ryobi generator has a plastic cooling fan that shattered and broke into pieces. The generator was left running and overheated until it lost compression. The engine is not seized, but there is little to no compression. The head gasket is blown and the top end is a mess with baked on oil and the oil low and like tar. Will walk you though breaking down the engine and repairing the damage.

UPDATE what I think happened to this machine:
1) The ground wire was unplugged from the magneto.
2) Engine was low of oil and could not shut down due to the magneto ground wire being unplugged.
3) Governor broke due to lack of lubrication and engine raced.
4) Increased speed caused excess voltage caused the digital meter to melt.
5) Cooling fan came apart.
6) Engine overheated and head gasket blew.

The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

I only let you know. I got a new generator here in Panama and it didn’t start. So I searched online before giving it back, 3 months after I bought it. Anyway. I watched some of your videos and got some good information. Cleaned the carburetor and it runs now. No power was produced (I thought). 2 days I lost my hair over it, checking everything. It showed 120 volt but no power on the outlets. It’s actually a Honda Gen/ welder kombi. After 2 days searching I switched from Generator to Welder - and I got power on my outlets! Turned the switch by 180 degrees and now I actually have power when the switch is pointed to Generator. That was another head shaking experience with tools bought in Panama and assembled in China or Mexico! Thanks for your videos.

Watching your repair videos has taught me a TON of good info about small cc 4 stoke engines. Pretty universal knowledge. However ive been binge watching your vids as they’re so satisfying and calming to me. Feels like im in the garage with my dad again. Always a good time and love seeing the problems solved and repairs done correctly. Always appreciate content that shows/teaches proper techniques and not in a condescending manner. I am going to be on the lookout for a honda eu2000i or 2200 now just for the rare blackout here in AZ and for camping. :) thank you!!!

I bought a Gentron just before Christmas, used but only used once for 4 hours. When I got it home it and tried running only ran for 4 minutes and shut down. The oil looked like what you drained out of this unit. The fan was in in pieces like this one and the valve guide plate was almost wore thru on the intake side. I've replaced those items and changed oil 6 times. I do have a new head gasket if I decide to pull the head and have a look there. Very great videos and I've learned a lot in just the short time I've been watching. Thanks James!!

Had my woodspliiter with the same problem. The cooling fan disintegrated. Since I heard it fly apart the engine was quickly shutdown without any over heating. Keep up the great videos. Have learned a lot of repair techniques from you.

Whenever I'm working on something my car's lawn equipment motorcycles pretty much any thing with an engine and things are not going as I plan. That's when I put my tools away clean up and then something hits me that might work. And I will go back out and finally fix what was broken. I enjoyed your video look forward to watching more.

As a mechanic for 40 years it’s great to see someone that wants to correctly complete a project. One note. The longer the extension on a torque wrench the less accurate it is. Always try to use the shortest one possible. And put oil on the threads and under the head.

You do nice work. Like your step by step process.The chongqing 420 is the same company that makes predator 420 from harbor freight. I think this is a slightly older version of the current HF 420.

Back in 2012 the month before hurricane Sandy Hit us we had some weird weather come through in August of that year. It wasn't a name storm it was supposed to just be extreme downpour and lots of wind. Right at midnight we lost electricity. So I go out immediately in the rain get to generator set up and then ran power to the house. After 24 hours we knew this was going to be a long blackout. So since I had 2 generator I was switching back and forth. Four days later when the electric came back on I left both of my generators in the garage. By the way a detached garage I don't want anyone to think you can run a generator especially in a garage attached to your home. The next day I ran up to the store came back and changed the oil on both of my generators. I even checked the plugs in the air filter and all that was fine. When we got it by hurricane Sandy we lost electric for 2 days. Even though a month earlier I changed the oil I did the exact same thing again. I'm a strong believer in taking care of your equipment.

Changing oil on low end in small engines (25-50 hours), longer time up to 100 hours. For example, many zero turn mowers say 100 hours on oil, 200 on oil filter.

Wow, great video with a lot of very helpful tips! I kind of figured they were talking Newton-meters in the manual but I don’t get how they came up with 10 ft lbs, that’s some bad info. When it was over-revving I initially thought the plastic stem on the governor gear had melted, glad that wasn’t the case. Someone was probably tinkering around with the carb trying to get it to run.

Well I admire your tenacity. Well done. Either that screw on the carb was set wrong at the factory or by the owner. There were too many things that seem to point to really shoddy quality control issues. I do understand that over heating can play havoc but what caused it to happen in the first place? Again it points to crappy workman shipp at the factory or possibly inferior parts. This is one brand of generator I would run away from. Ryobi needs to rethink their mission for a better genset to sell their name on.

Just found your channel and have started binge watching. I have a couple of points to make (like you really need them, wink, wink...). First point is that your calm demeanor and logical troubleshooting technique is wonderful. The second point is to stop working on the floor. Your knees and back might be good now but putting these machines on a lift table will save those joints from pain in the future. That said, let me get back to my binge watching of your channel.

I have no idea who makes Ryobi stuff, I do know you don't want any of it. I have had 3 different Ryobi things, None ran good . The first one was so bad I took it back and got a different one. (that's 2) Sorta worked, I got a new Ryobi back pack blower, had to adjust the carb pretty much every time you started it. I finally got a clone carb ( $9.50 free shipping) so far it's been good. But no more Ryobi anything. (ever, personal opinion ) I had a Coleman generator I used for the 12 volt battery charger at the race track. It was only a couple months old when the plastic fan exploded and took out the circuit board., which they fixed. Still works good.

My former boss and I have had very good luck with their One+ 18v electric stuff but I too have had issues with their weed eaters etc just never being quite right and constantly needing tinkering.

For the bolt type and the composite head gasket type, 25-30 tq ft lbs seems spot on. Rota service manual is available online in PDF format.

In over heated engines it is a good ideal to replace the rings. They are responsible for a large portion of the heat an engine creates. While they may be good for a while they loose their tension. Some from the heat, the rest from wear as the oil breaks down. Probably not a huge deal for these little engines. In large equipment where we monitor fuel consumption, and oil analysis. We can see repeatable evidence the engine has lost efficiency. Some engines we replaced cylinder liners (based on taper and out of round measurements). Others we chucked a hone down the bores and new rings. Both had acceptable improvements.

Good point. Excessive heat will cause the rings to loose tension. Unfortunately these small engines are not worth much. I was surprised it came back as well as it did.

Thanks! Just pull the spark plug, put the piston to the bottom and fill the cylinder with rope. That locks up the engine. Goof for removing the flywheel or rotor.

Just to make it clear from what James said: when you're removing the flywheel you need the engine to not turn over. If it does, then you can't loosen the flywheel because you're just turning the engine. With rope in the cylinder the piston compresses the rope as much as it can when you turn the flywheel, then it stops moving because it can't compress the rope any more, so the engine is not turning. Why rope? Because it's easy to feed in, easy to get out, and it's soft so it won't cause any damage.

Your videos are excellent - high quality teaching and production (thanks). I did laugh @16:45 though "I these things are all in millimetres?" reading a manual showing "mm" as a measurement - c'mon it's not that hard for an imperial guy to recognise metric is it lol? I also think you were spot on converting the "40" (presumably Newton Metres or nm) to foot-pounds. As you said, 9 foot-pounds is ridiculous for a head torque measurement.

Judging by the way the valves looked when you took the cover off, I think the governor is all sludged up and isn't moving correctly.

I think we can agree the engine lubricating system was contaminated. No doubt there was still sludge left in the crankcase. I would have set the carb at idle and briefly run the engine with diesel fuel in the crankcase to clean out the molasses. Then drain the diesel, fill with 5-20, warm it up under a moderate load and then change the oil again, refilling with the recommended oil.

Its actually a good design that has a failure mode like that to stop the engine before the piston welds itself to the bore, making it a total write off.

Hi James. You alway show us the hertz on you meter what is the importance of this. Your vids really help me understand small engine and I do plan to get a generator for our 30 Amp travel trailer but have been worried how to maintain a generator but after seeing your videos I feel pretty confident I can maintain one and if need be refer back to your videos. The hertz tells me what speed the engine is running at (60 hertz =3600rpm). I want to see that the engine is running a little above with not load and the a little below when under a heavy load. Ideally I would set at 60 hertz and the generator would maintain that. Only inverter generator will stay perfect or any generator with a computer controlled servo on the throttle plate. Most generators use a mechanical governor with flyweights. Unfortunately they sag a little under load. Also if the engine is down on power then the hertz will drop excessively or the engine will stall when under load. The most import thing with a generator is keep the oil clean and the fuel fresh.

There is a chart that might help in determining torque specs. Searching for "bolt size vs torque spec" or similar term, it will take you to several links. The recommended torque specs is based upon the bolt size, thread pitch and grade of bolt. Apparently bolt torque doesn't matter if you are bolting to a cast aluminum block with or without a gasket or a block fo cheddar cheese.

Probably 40 NM, which is about 30 FLb. My old Honda lawnmower had such wired torque settings for the blade - 37 NM. I just hit the bolts a couple of times with my impact driver. They never loosened or came off. I use the same procedure on flywheel nuts on chainsaws and have not lost a key, yet. It is a lot easier than blocking the piston to put a torque wrench on the nut and torquing it to 25 FLb.

I'd like to get an inch-pound torque wrench but how are they calibrated or does one need an error table. I saw some reviews on Amazon and they seem to be all over the place. I don't wanna spend a bundle and I don't even know who would have a tester. I know the Snap-On truck has them, but I don't really have access to that truck. Would the tool stores have them?

Im in the UK, where metric is mostly used.. Seeing that the service manual is in mm, (clearance for valves), the cylinder head torque will be in NM.. (newton meters)... 40nm.. which is 29 ft/lb...

If the torque is in metric, it will be 40 Nm which is 29.5 ft lbs. Chongquing is mostly under water right now, I wonder if this generator was put together as someone was running out the door from previous floods. Interesting that Ryobi is a badge engineering company.

Why are governors such a problem on engines? I've had engines that started running bad and someone said it was probably the governor. They didn't want to touch it.

Glad it was just the carb. I was thinking with how bad the oil was that the gov was gummed up and was going to suggest throwing some seafoam into the oil and running it for a bit no load and see if it would clean up and start working.

Are the Ryobi generators any good ? Just had one given to me after it blew the head gasket. I have a 20 inch Ryobi chainsaw that has ran great for me since I bought it even though the crank broke on me last year and luckily I had a parts saws that I got the crank from

Default torque unit in metric system is Newton.Meter. 40 Newton.Meter is 29.5 lb.ft

For oil to do that you're looking at about 400°. And it was making a lot of noise. Someone ignored the racket.

Did you try to reset governor? Loosen governor bolt and turn governor shaft clockwise as far as you can. Then retighten governor bolt.

I tried resetting it twice. It ended up being that the last owner turned the idle screw in so far that it was holding the engine at 3600 RPM at startup. After warming up, the speed would increase, but the governor could not close the throttle plate any more.

James if you had to buy a reliable gen what gen would you buy ? At my farm upstate we loose power regularly during the winter for days ! Most gen if you run them for days they will fail sooner or later ! So far lost several gen in several years cost to much to fix !

With so many discovered loose bolts, I would not have trusted any of them to be torqued correctly. I would have completely stripped it down and reassembled it from scratch. If the manual specs seem questionable, you could probably use the same as with other makes of engine without any problems.

Looks like it's never had an oil change in it's life. I've fixed a few like that. I soaked the head in degreaser overnight and then used my power washer to clean and it came out looking almost like a new head

How was the ryobi sourced head gasket packaged? Also did you resurface the head or check warping?

I checked the the head for warping is it was right on the edge of junk. Did not resurface since the head just barely passed. The Ryobi gasket was packaged in between two pieces of cardboard I think. The other was just sent in an envelope. It did not make the journey.

What can get a generator run hot ? Mine is a 7000 power horse and it was sitting for almost two years and did the carb and tank cleaning., check oil level And work fine for the next 20m and all of the sudden was smoking hot , the valve cover start it leaking oil and engine was really hot . Any ideas ?

You should pull the recoil and air shroud off make sure the fan on the flywheel is not broken and no mice have made a nest blocking the air from traveling over the head. Valve cover should not leak if hot. Might also check the head gasket and check the the breather hose is not clogged or kinked.

James Condon fly wheel fan was missing, now I have a blown head gasket and I can find the model number to order the parts , some of your videos shows is on the valve cover but this one is not there . Any idea?

I would suggest synthetic oil for these generators. It has a MUCH higher breakdown temperature.

30 ft lbs would be about right, they look like M8 bolts. Def not torque to yield style either, but I've never run into a TTY bolt on a small engine. I think without that service manual you'd have come to the same conclusion of 30 ft lbs based upon bolt size. But it's interesting knowing at least some values to convert. Clearly, that's Nm/Kg.

LOL. If you sell this gen set you can tell the owner that it has been well seasoned. I would be worried about the valve spring, and ring tensions after getting that hot. They may have have had the temper taken out of them.

Yes good point. Was not really expecting this one to come back. But since it handled a load without issue, would say that it is doing what it should.

@@jcondon1 Lets hope so. If it can run through a tank with a good load on it, and there is no excessive oil consumption, then you are probably right. You have obviously been doing this for some time. You are maybe enabling someone to have a functioning generator who would not otherwise be able to afford one, and you are keeping a lot of these things out of the local land fill. I am glad I found your channel.
