This is a follow up to my previous video where I mistakenly provided instruction on configuring this DRO for use on a lathe for diameter vs radius readings.

G'day Lee I stumbled across your channel as I was looking for info on how to use a DRO as a beginner. I have exactly the same make of DRO on my mill and lathe and your right about the instruction manual! I would like to thank you for showing how to set them up and this video explains a lot and your right I would never have found this information! Hi Lee, I have had a Smithy for 20 some odd years and finally installed the jingce DRO about 6 months ago. Tremendous improvement! The manual that came with my unit was crap but it did discuss pressing the mm/inch button on startup to enter the parameter menu. I have ordered a PrecisionMatthews lathe so I downloaded the PrecisionMathews DRO manual listed under the PM727 mills. The mill dro manual is closer to the jing than the lathe dro manual. It also discusses the 6 presses on page two. Look for the "PM DRO Manual 1-15-2018". Keep up the interesting videos. Thanks, Dave Rupp

Hi Lee. Thanks for this video it pointed me in the right direction. I have a 2 axis panel similar but not exactly the same as yours. The little s doesn't seem to do anything, but the . does. And yes 6 times on the Metric/imperial button once it is booting up does get you into those settings where I managed to change the Mill 3 to Mill 2 but storing it was something else. Enter didn't do it, but in the end I found the . stored the info. Not particularly intuitive, but it got there in the end. Many thanks lee for pointing me in the right direction.

Soft ware I have been following this post closely as I also have the same model DRO as you have been describing and I have come to the conclusion the no two have the same software, it seems to me that with each shipment they upgrade the software and I have tried to contact them with the website they provide, but that does not work, Like yourself slowly I am getting there I have tried many other postings on U tube but even though they have the same model number they behave quite differently, while they are a good little DRO they let them self down by not having any place you can turn to for help. Anyway thanks for what I have learnt from your posts. David

I have the same drop.You are right about the manual not being very understandable. Please post more on this. Dro as you discover how to use it. I've been searching for anyone who can bring some light to this. Btw l live in eastern nc also. In the Kinston/Goldsboro area.

Now, transferring from the calculator to one of the axes would be useful to me. I have a different brand of DRO, but the way these guys copy each other's features, I probably just need to look for it on mine. TY for the video.

You inspired me to try on my DRO, which is not the same as Lee's, but hosts much the same buttons in a much different layout. I found that I could transfer an axis into the calculator by using the up or down buttons, so the the "mode" display showed 'CAL R', then pressing one of the axis zero buttons (eg X0). However, everything then seemed to lockup on mine :-( Didn't seem all that useful at that stage! I could more reliably transfer from the calculator into an axis. Once again using up or down so the mode display showed 'CAL T', then pressing the appropriate axis zero button (eg X0). BUT, the value was negated on that axis after leaving the calculator.... Is it just ropey software? Would be interesting how others go (in a not so cold shed!)....

On my lathe DRO (Sino brand) I can transfer only to Y after I press the up arrow, Y0 and exit calculator mode. On my Mill (T-Pac brand) I can transfer a calculation to any axis with just the X0 Y0 or Z0 key, however it transfers 1,000 times my answer, e.g. 55.0 instead of .055. Not so useful.

My smelly manual says what Lee has found, Lathe modes use the 1/2 button to switch between radius/diameter modes. Mill modes allow you to use an edge finder on opposing edges to locate the center point using the 1/2 button: First edge, zero axis(eg X0); second edge press Axis (eg X); press 1/2; press axis again and value is set; wind to zero for center.

I think that the symbol represents the compound set at 45 degrees. That changes the radius to the diameter if you use the compound as you feed.

Thank you. Any information on import DRO's is helpful. Since the manual for these units are difficult to understand and are really incomplete, I'm thinking that I MAY try to gather as much information on their use and functions and then creating a PDF. So if anyone has a tip for using them, let me know.

The mm/inch button gets me into the menu, once I find the mill3 setting how to I lock it in? It keeps returning to lathe3. Is there a button to keep it on mill?

I have the same display, but this procedure does not get me into the setting. It doesn't even show MILL 3, it shows LC instead as it boots up. Any ideas, on how to get into the settings?

Hi Lee, I just found you channel. Wonder if you could give me a hand. I have the same dro and rules, but it seams they don't work. Both are connected but no numbers changing while moving the scale. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Nope, so far it appears that the settings are “sticky”.

I have ordered a jcs900-2ae on aliexpress, and got the new version. It has 4 less butons an verry clear manual. A good improvement. Nou thay have a special chapter for the radius and diameter in the parameter setings.

@@eeneihoorterbij i think i found it online. Its pretty plain. I talks about tranfering info from the cal to any axis but the cal must be in cal mode 1. Can not find cal mode 1. Have fun with yours.

jsteifel Be sure to read the replies to James' first comment. That's where the 6 times info was first shared. James's comments & the replies to it lead me on a quest for more info that has revealed a couple other items that either aren't mentioned in the manual or are different than the manual.

I have exactly the same unit on my lathe, and the three axis version on the lathe. The manuals are absolutely terrible, I have to agree. Simply not worth opening at all. I am going to try your radius/diameter trick tomorrow. I would be very, very interested to see a video on everything else you have learned about this unit. Do you have any idea at all how to use the Tool function? One of my dros has the tool button, the other doesn't. Neither of the manuals actually matches their respective units, and the Tool button doesn't seem to do anything at all. There's zero useful information in the manual, of course.

Well, I couldn't wait. Turns out my 2AE and 3AE are quite different from each other. They have different buttons, some of them are not even in the same places, and I cannot find a button that does anything if I press it 6 times during startup. I guess I'm stuck with having to fudge the radius/diameter thing, unless anyone else has any ideas.

It is working great - just a few little quirks to deal with in transferring a calculator value to an axis, but once I figured out what was going on I simply divide the value by 2 before transferring from the calculator to an axis (it doesn't recognize the radius/diameter setting and doubles whatever is in the calculator). I suspect some programmer was tasked with the duty of considering that setting and simply got it backwards. I'll do another follow up soon on more things I've learned how to use on it. I will likely be purchasing one of these for my surface grinder. Thanks for stopping by.

I don't think your information was bad to start with because the end result is still the same. The half function is essentially performing the the same task. The manual is total gibberish nonsense.
