Hey jct great video, liked and subscribed! I’m doing this in my Jeep and I want to replace my stock amp and stock sub and keep my factory head unit. I already have everything but was wondering if I need to remove my stock amp to be able to use my aftermarket amp? And also I was going to tap into my stereo harness sub wire in the back of my stereo. I noticed you tapped into it right at the sub in the back, which would you recommend if time wasn’t a issue?
@JCTFIXIT
@JCTFIXIT 3 жыл бұрын
If time isn't an issue, tap the sub wire coming from the back of the stereo. Depending on your vehicle configuration, this may bypass the amp. Like in my vehicle the oem sub amp was in the trunk and I obviously do not bypass it. Your stock amp doesn't have to be removed and won't draw much power if it is not energizing any speakers although it wouldn't hurt either if you wanted to remove it. Just make sure that its only powering stock sub. You don't want to accidently remove power from other speakers.

Great video bro! Answered a lot of questions! But I do have 1, do you find a difference in sound quality to the sub between using the "speaker input" option for signal compared to using an rca converter? Not sure if you have ever used one before
@JCTFIXIT
@JCTFIXIT 5 ай бұрын
In my case going to the oem sub, the line could be filtered or clamped already. But the same could be the case for rear speakers in some vehicles as well. Surely you will get absolute best sound by replacing your head unit. But as far as using a line out converter, it wouldn't really change anything from utilizing high level inputs.

I'm about to do this soon... Just to be clear, the ignition original fuse was 20A, I noticed you put two 10A fuses. Is this because the fuses are run in series, so 2 10s in the fuse adder works the same at one 20 in the original fuse box? TIA for your response.

Thanks for the video. Does your car have a factory amplifier powering that factory subwoofer? I'm beginning to install a sub and amplifier in a similar automobile and was told to make sure that I tapped intothe speaker signal prior to the factory amplifier otherwise I'd be running too many watts into my aftermarket amplifier. Thanks.
@JCTFIXIT

Yes I am downstream of factory amp. I have not had any problems, but it is probably best practice to tap signals upstream of factory amp.

I’m considering going with a powered sub to add a little bass to my factory stereo, wondering if should go with the Rockford fosgate 300 watt that goes frequency response: 35-200 Hz or if I should spend the extra $140 and get the 500 watt that has a frequency response: 20-200 Hz, that seems to be the only difference is a little bit deeper bass. Curious what watt your amp is and what you think I should go with
@JCTFIXIT
@JCTFIXIT 2 жыл бұрын
If it were me I would go with the p-300.
@ColtinCountryman
@ColtinCountryman 6 ай бұрын
I think it's worth mentioning that while this is a quick and easy solution, it may not be the best way to do this to protect your factory speakers, and get the best signal. Your factory head unit is designed to lower the bass frequencies down at higher volumes to protect the factory speakers. This means that your amplifier isn't receiving as strong of a signal as you'd like it too and you may become prone to push your amp beyond what it can handle to compensate. Also, tapping into the speaker outputs in parallel like this means that the head unit now has a lower impedance on it than it usually would have due to a less electrically restrictive path made possible by the circuitry in the amplifier's inputs. It probably won't be a problem in most cases but some factory head units may not be able to handle it.

Nerd alert ⚠️. Thanks for the extra thoughts.
@braceyourselvesfortruth2492
@braceyourselvesfortruth2492 6 ай бұрын
The amplifier speaker level inputs should have a significantly higher input impedance than the speaker outs on the head unit, on the order of thousands of ohms. This will keep the impedance basically the same on the entire load, like 3.97 instead of 4 ohms. This is exactly how they are intended to be used. Going back to the first issue, I have found that the best way to combat this is to set your levels at your ideal listening volume, but of course you are ultimately limited both by gain staging and speaker power handling. Thanks for the video!

@JCTFIXIT Ай бұрын
Your wording is a little confusing. Without knowing your setup, it's hard to say. Generally though on an amp, the rca inputs are for signals that are low and not being driven already. High level inputs are called such because they can handle a higher watt load incoming into the amp.

Technically you could wire this to the ignition and I find this is easiest to do on the ignition fuse by adding a circuit

I have a 2016 Chevy Malibu and it doesn’t have rca outputs on my head unit. How would I tap in to the speaker wires if I don’t have rear deck speakers?
@JCTFIXIT
@JCTFIXIT 3 жыл бұрын
Run from rear door speakers into panel between front and rear doors then down under carpets to back seats to trunk. If your amp doesn't have a high level input, you will need a line converter. It takes the speaker signal and dumbs it down and switches it to rca to go into your amp.

So question for ya my guy. Now as far as the internal wiring goes, did you tap into any radio unit harness for anything or was everything practically done in the trunk??

The way you worded this question is a little tricky so I don't want to throw you off but if you are going to an amp that does not have high-level input then yes you would go to a line out converter then to your amp input

So when you tap into a speaker are you sharing the power from that speaker with the sub or is it just the signal?

It is used as an input signal to go to your amplifier. Then the output on the amplifier goes to the subwoofer.

I have a factory sub in my trunk as well. I just tap the speaker wires between the amp and the factory sub? I would love to not have to open my dash. On my amps manual it says to connect speaker outputs from receiver to high level input connector of amplifier. I could go into my dash and do that?

Thank you so much for this great video, trying to move a sub and amp over to my new car but I don’t have a head unit so this comes in handy. Few questions for ya though, 1st: is there a requirement for the amps on the add a circuit fuse or do I just need to match the output of that fuse? And second: I only have the L and R inputs so is it even possible to have a frequency input without an aftermarket head unit, or would I be able to splice the input wires I have and run them from my rear deck speakers? 4:11
@JCTFIXIT
@JCTFIXIT Жыл бұрын
For the add a circuit fuse honestly a 5 amp is plenty as not much amperage goes through to tell the amp to turn on. Yes you can absolutely just utilize your rear deck speakers you do not have to have a sub already. They actually make a line out converter that will detect when there is voltage on the rear speaker line coming in to it and it will provide a remote signal for your amp thus removing the need for the add a circuit. Check out the link at the bottom. I am also seeing some amps that will automatically turn on based on when they detect signal. amzn.to/3oUcuyj

Have you listened to your system with and without the 8" sub? That seems like it's asking for phase issues, especially with how they're currently positioned. I've often thought about experimenting in similar ways but it just gets expensive to even things out as much as it would cost to make it work with one sub.

@@JCTFIXIT if you like it, that's all that matters! But if it sounds good without it and it doesn't make a material difference that's notable and makes your eyes wide and you go "Oooh," I would unplug the 8. Just my preference.

Distortion can happen if you run speaker wires along with the power wires which give off static. So separate on each side of car.
