In this video I offer my opinions and observations after using Jealous Devil brand charcoal for the very first time. I believe it is made from quebracho wood. I have no affiliation with the manufacturer or retailer of this charcoal brand.
This charcoal was a gift from someone who bought it through www.bbqguys.com/jealous-devil...
You can find out more about Jealous Devil at jealousdevil.com

It performed well. I can understand the leeriness. The JD brand has a lot of hype. That hype has been off putting to me. The claim of XL pieces and a lot less ash is just hype. The claims of no sparking and higher temp burning are truth. It is a premium charcoal at a premium price. As I explained to another commenter it is like the difference between Regular 87 octane gasoline, and Super Premium 93 octane gasoline. I can see why competition teams use this, for the same reasons race car drivers use high octane high performance gasoline.

I love the fact it doesn't spark off like other brands . I would feel safe using it out on my deck. Thanks for the review.

Yes I was very impressed with the non emittance of sparks. I don’t have a wood deck, I have a concrete patio but it is covered a ceiling made of vinyl siding. Wouldn’t take much to melt holes in it. I felt much less nervous and quite safe using this lump under my covered patio than the RO lump I had been using. I suppose you would feel the same safety about this type of charcoal on your beautiful wooden deck.,

Everyday BBQ & Cuisine I want to see how they compare too. I’m very interested in FOGO (the Portuguese word for fire). The two brands should compare similarly because I believe they are both made from quebracho wood. I have to admit that at my age and high level of cynicism and skepticism, I find FOGO’s style of marketing more appealing. It seems to me that JD tries to sell a coolness factor and manly sexiness. While, Fogo focuses on being serious about selling charcoal. However, back in the day, my 24 year old self would have thought that JD was really cool man I would have bought in to the hype. My older wiser more cynical self finds the trade dress and marketing style of FOGO more appealing. I can’t get the association of Dirt Devil vacuum cleaners out of my mind either. Maybe it is the Red and Black color scheme that I find unappealing, associated with the Devil and demonic forces such as the Atlanta Dirty Bird football team. That red and black is the evil opposite of the holy and heavenly Black & Gold of the Saints. 😂

@BigLewBBQ
@BigLewBBQ 5 жыл бұрын
MeatCranium BBQ AND REVIEW yes Barbecue is all over the world and usually on lump charcoal. The second oldest cooking fuel known to mankind. Second only to wood. It has been used for more than 5,000 years of human history. In various places with various woods. Some areas of the world lump charcoal has to be used because the available native forest woods are wholly unsuitable for cooking. Did you know you can make lump charcoal from pine? You can’t cook with pine unless you want food to taste like turpentine. However, if pine is fully carbonized to charcoal all the volatiles and impurities are removed and you can cook with it. Many areas of the world where pine forests are all that is available, the pine is reduced to lump charcoal in order to use it as cooking fuel. However, there is no way pine lump charcoal could ever be marketed and sold in the USA. The quebracho wood (a very hard wood, not pine) charcoal has a great chance of being very successful in the USA market. Jesus Christ himself used charcoal to cook fish see John 21:9. There was no funky smell, it did smell different but it wasn’t an unappealing or unappetizing odor.

Interesting. I see that it runs hot but how would it do on a snake method with wood chips for low and slow? Is it designed for fast cooking only?
@BigLewBBQ
@BigLewBBQ 5 жыл бұрын
budlightdaddyjuan many people claim, including the manufacturer that it is excellent for low and slow in Kamado and drum smokers. As for the snake method, I would be skeptical of any lump charcoal. I haven’t tried to use a snake method with lump. Lump is naturally carbonized pieces wood with inconsistent shapes and sizes. Briquettes are made from carbonized wood saw dust or shavings. The tiny particles are mixed with an adhesive called a binder. This binder often made corn starch or gum Arabic, Holds the compressed carbonized saw dust together in a briquette shape. These binders usually ad nothing to the BTU of the burning charcoal, usually these binders subtract from it. Which is why lump burns hotter. The trade off, since the briquettes are uniform in shape and size they can be counted on for a constant even burn rate of time and temperature. When using the snake method, the dependability and consistency of this burn rate is crucial to the success of the snake method. I would only use briquettes in a snake method. There are some premium briquets that are made only from hard wood sawdust and use a binder that does not detract but may even add to the BTU value. You cold try those if you wanted a higher temp on a burning charcoal snake.

simplemans BBQ Yes “but” is a conjunction, like “and” or “or” it is considered improper grammar to begin a sentence with a conjunction, which should be used only to join clauses or words in a sentence. I am a language teacher, you know. Did I use “but” to start a sentence?

simplemans BBQ Adverbs such as; however, still, yet, nonetheless, nevertheless are all appropriate ways to begin a sentence. Grammar standards for speaking are always more lax than writing. As for expensive charcoal, when buying any fuel, you are just burning your money. I buy regular 87 octane gasoline. Nevertheless, many folks purchase premium 91 octane and super premium 95 octane gasoline. Think of this JD charcoal for your barbecue needs like super premium gasoline for automobiles. Harry Soo, and the competition guys need charcoal like this they way race car divers need high octane fuel. My 19 year old Chevy pick up is just fine with regular 87 octane. And most of my barbecue requirements only need the Walmart Expert Grill brand charcoal. ( It is made by Royal Oak)
