Open the oxygen flaps underneath and leave the lid open if you want to measure highest heat value. It needs a steady source of oxygen. Closing the lid is not going to get you the maximum heat value. I bet it can get up to 1000’F or even more. I used Kamado Joe Lump Charcoal which had super large Lumps and I got it ripping at 1200’F. Absolutely amazing sear on AAA Angus high quality 1.5 inch thick New York Strip-loin steaks and 1.5 inch Ribeye steaks. Amazing Charcoal. Thank you for the hands on practical review, it was very helpful. Based on your review I’m going to stick with FOGO and Kamado Joe Lump Charcoal. 👍👍

It would be cool if you did a review of Japanese binchotan charcoal. It is very expensive but it’s claimed to be some kind of super-charcoal made by the Japanese for centuries. It takes weeks to make it. I have never seen it before.

Hey when you get a chance put FOGO to the test as well. I like JD, I just think it takes some getting use too when you actually cook with it. Ribs in my PBC came out great, but I remember thinking that the chicken I made had this weird flavor to them and I think it was from the JD charcoal. Don't get me wrong, they weren't bad, they were just not what I was expecting I just had to get use to it. P.S. Did you happen to notice that B&B is coming out with a XL Premium Lump soon?

I have used JD for about a year now. I find it far better than the usual Royal Oak in many ways. Royal Oak seems to get beat up in shipping or they fill with really small pieces. JD is always medium pieces with some large pieces mixed in. JD produces much more heat in the application I use it, a Kamado sytle cooker, Primo XL oval. JD produces much less ash than other brands. B&B in my experience has a ton of snap, crackle, pop where JD has none. Using a ceramic grill, I don't typically use a chimney to start the coals, I use the big compressed cardboard I guess they are or wax cubes. JD burns hot and a very small amount of coals can get me to 400 º no problem. The obvious comparison here would be JD vs Fogo. Great review.

There’s a video that compares JD with Fogo Super Premium. In that test, JD was much less hot than the Fogo for the first 20m and then it caught up and surpassed the Fogo temp later on. I’m curious about whether this is repeatable/consistent. Did you notice the JD getting much hotter after a bunch of time passed?

You mean the grill surface temperature right? I use a Thermoworks HVAC gun in comps. But at home I normally use a dual zone and spin the grates. I hope that makes sense. But if you have a chimney of JD it’s a hot burning charcoal. Another way is grill spray normally burns off at 450-600. So at least you’ll know you really hot there. I hope that helps

I like that charcoal, but it's really pricey, I don't think it's worth the extra expense, like you said, the bag is tough, but due to the price, I won't buy it again or try FOGO and any other so called premium charcoal, it doesn't perform that much better than Royal Oak, IMHO, to warrant double or more, the price. I'm gonna try B & B since you and other youtubers seem to get great results from that brand, the price is just a little more than Royal Oak. I'm just a backyard BBQ guy, but your videos do help in determining what's good and what's not, so thanks for the review!
@jamoney45

good, can't wait to see it, but whatever happens, I think it's hard to justify the price, maybe for you competition guys it's a great option, I just didn't see that much better performance, I've long cooked killer briskets, ribs and pulled pork with royal oak, which is really a common brand here in so cal, But for just a few more bucks, I'll give B & B a try
