Most people do to. It’s quite pointless to annotate random stuff that you’re not interested in if your not reviewing the book or something. People annotate cause they like quotes or wanna write how they felt about something so don’t feel alone in this.

I love to pop sticky notes in my books and write whole paragraphs on specific points or the syntax. If it’s an educational book, I like to add my own little cliff notes as if I were teaching this subject to someone else so I can better understand it. I also like to highlight vocabulary words I don’t know and compile them at either the front or back of the book so I can try to learn them.

I'm sorry, absolutely no hate to people who do write/highlight/underline in their books, but I personally just cannot justify making any kind of annotation in my book aside from putting tabs on. If I need to write something about it, like a burning theory I have, I put it in the 'My Comments' section of my reading journal. For me personally it feels so wrong to write in books. Also, (this is a legitimate question) can somebody please tell me how they can re-read their books when it's all highlighted and written in and underlined? I know that on the first reading of the book it helps readers slow down and appreciate the book more (hence why I put in tabs) but what if it's an amazing book and you want to re-read it? Don't people get distracted by the colours?
@alex1937

Personally I mostly annotate my books on a second reread because annotating all the books I read is a pain so I only reserve it to my favorite books that I do reread. And no, those underlines, writing, highlights or bookmarks do not distract me from reading at all!! It actually makes me happy reading past me comments or my past impression of that scene. It adds more to my experience and it makes it absolutely fun!! Edit to add: this comes from someone who is NOT neat or aesthetic or has beautiful writing, my fave books look messed up and crazy in some pages but because all that matters is my reading experience and that its my book idc

I cant relate to people who only do tiny notes on books or think it “ruins it”. I love scribbling and making random notes or even full blown descriptions- and analyzing a bunch on my books. I think it makes it personal and mine. I love letting out those feelings of excitement or anger or sadness right next to the text. The first book I ever annotated in was the sorcerer’s stone and I was only nine years old. I reread it as a sixteen year old and I think it was so surreal and fun to see my own thoughts and how much I have grown up. If you’re reading this, scribble all yours thoughts. Future you will love it. Remember that it’s just paper and that it’s not that deep.

I annotate but not for the aesthetic lol. Not that that’s bad. I’m an English major and when I annotate I like annotating with a purpose-or just finding lines I like in books. I don’t always annotate. Sometimes I don’t really see a need to. I try to only annotate when something is important to me, or is necessary for my understanding or something. I always annotate books for class, and doing that is helpful for writing papers or even class discussion as I can go back to my exact thoughts when I initially read it. Sometimes I’ll see something I may not have remembered if I didn’t put it down right there.

I don’t like putting tabs on my books because I’m a little grossed out by the idea of putting glue on my book but I love annotating so I just highlight underline and write stuff in the edges and sometimes when I wanna write like a lot but tere isn’t any space on the page I go and write at the end of the chapter cuz there’s usually space there. I’m the very rare scenario that there’s no space there either I’ll just slap on a sticky note and call it a day

I plan on starting to annotate my books in my own way. Tabbing pages and writing my thoughts in an actual journal so I can keep the anxiety side of me calm and still be able to write my thoughts :3

I use a silver pen for everything. Especially for writing my thoughts (usually a few words) just in case I screw up, I can make it look cute.

My books need to look lived in and loved and I do that by dog earring pages and writing every thought directly in the pages. They’re spaces I reside in and they show my marks on every page

I don't like to scribble on a book unnecessarily. & Never with a pen, not even in my dreams. But those sticky notes are something which I'll do from now on. It looks cool✌️

Me: I wanna annotate! Also me: NOOOOOOOO YOU'LL GET PEN MARKS ON IT, GIVE IT BACK!!!!!! Edit: I am annotating now. I color the side of the page a certain color so I don't use tabs that obscure my vision while reading and those colors correspond with a highlight I have on that page. I use pen as well. It's really fun!

Isn’t that just a wast of energy and distract your attention form engaging deeply with the book? I think if i do this and try to match stickers by color I would be annoyed by reading at all 😂😭 though i like to put my thoughts in the margins but I wouldn’t care if they are neat or messy because this is not the point at all in my case.

useful tips! HOWEVER prioritize content over neatness guys, your annotations do not have to be immaculate they just have to be useful for you!! nothing wrong with adding flair or neatness but don't spend so much time on making your tabs and writing look perfect that you are reading in between writing instead of making notes as you read. 😁

I didn’t get the “letting me annotate their book for them” .. what do you mean? You’re not having the same thoughts or feelings while reading that book.. I’d it cause you wanna see what this person thought they put the book ? Or am I missing something? That’s like sending someone a page and being like “write my thoughts”.

3:58 I don't have those transparent post-it and various sticky notes. So, my method is consisting seperate media to do annotation, like in digital journaling. I use app called *Notion* to do my reading journal. This app is a hell if you are beginner to it, even Notion's long life community says the same. But, once you get used with it, it wouldn't became much a hindrance. _I created a template that contains each section of:_ • Reaction section • Story elements section The *Reaction Section* are where I do the comment on a paragraph or page that to me was interesting. Or at least, worth to make a note. It contains my honest and immediate reaction while reading through the books. It could be (stupid) thoughts, quotes, or rant. I wrote it in disordered bullet points. Sometime I wrote what page I commented, sometimes didn't. _The story elements section basically are:_ - *The characters* Who the characters were, my impression to them (likes or dislikes), and what type of person that I got from their personalities. - *Dialogue* This section oftentimes I did not use, I rather combined it with the 'Reaction Section'. - *Worldbuilding* Its for fantasy books. I'm not writing every bit of lores and rules or magic systems in this section, but a _in-a-nutshell_ summary of my impression as whole with the worldbuilding. All of this so I can understand the world better, so I can make fan theories, so I can study it for my own fantasy drafts, or even so I can spot a plot hole and avoid the same mistake on my writing. The lores, rules, and magic systems I'm usually added in different section, which there's never "usually". Because, I never really done it, I'm too lazy. Fortunately, now we have wiki fandom, thanks to the dedicated member of whichever book I was reading. - *Themes* This is only for literature analysis. I wrote my interpretation to what the author was trying to convey in their writing, or nothing at all. This section is where I wrote the symbolisms, metaphor, or any other literary devices. Very often I didn't do this, its tiresome to reread a book. I only do a quick note for what theme the book was. You can say I'm not a fan of rereading even tho it defies the whole meaning of annotating. Haha. Maybe that's it. This is my digital anotation process. Alot messy, but works for me. Also, sorry for my messy English.
