France’s leading young harpsichordist performs works by two masters of the French Baroque. No surprises there, perhaps … but the harpsichordist in question is Jean Rondeau and the album is called Vertigo. It conceives the harpsichord in vividly theatrical terms. Vertigo takes its name from a dramatic, rhapsodic piece by Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer, who, along with Jean-Philippe Rameau, forms the focus of this album (recorded in the sumptuous Château d'Assas on its magnificent harpsichord).

Your might be suprised, i have a few recordings of late Mozart sonatas played on the harpsicord, it sounds wonderful.

Fun fact: Rameau was originally inspired to write this after listing to Native Americans from the Illini confederation perform at the Theatre-Italien in paris.

Quand j'étais jeune, je voulais apprendre le clavecin. On m'a proposé le piano . J'ai dit non je veux faire du clavecin. En réalité mes parents n'avaient pas les moyens de me faire donner des cours et de louer un instrument de musique. Les temps ont changé heureusement. Comme Jean Rondeau est doué et merveilleux! Sans aucun doute passionné car il en faut du travail pour arriver à ce niveau ! Merci, mille fois merci. Je n'aurai sans doute pas été à son niveau...

What a baroque feast for ear and eye! I needed it after watching an unspeakably drab video of the same piece danced by people in slum clothing doing some sort of Hip Hop.
