I loved this video so so much! Books are such a great way to connect to people - even when they're no longer here, because they showcase what that person cared about and different aspects of what interested them. My granddad was a huge reader and after him and my grandmother passed away, their book collection was passed on to different members of the family, so now I own quite a few of his old books and they're all so special to me. Some of the books on your dad's shelves were even the exact same editions as the ones my granddad owned and I couldn't help but smile when I noticed them :)

This was a very extensive an illuminating tour. Well done. I do wonder, though, about a couple things. Firstly, what happened to the bulk of your father’s books by authors beginning with “A”? That section seems sparse - I spotted only 13 "A" books on those first three bookcases. Also, how well are you able to locate a given book among these 17 bookcases? If I may, I’d like to offer a “Find This Book In Your Own Home” Challenge: 1. Permission by Saska Vogel 2. The Book of Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges 3. Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie All have appeared in this video. Good luck if you choose to go on this scavenger hunt. 😉

@LilyMichaelis1
@LilyMichaelis1 4 жыл бұрын
I used to be a give awayer but now I'm a "collector" lol I used to be very precious about my books but give away book I didn't like, now I keep them because I consider every book I read a valuable part of my life as a reader but I'm not precious with them, I write in them, I highlight, I break the spines, so even though I collect books and keep every book I read I don't think anyone would call me a collector for the way I "treat" my books, in fact, most people call me a monster lol

Bookshelves like these look attractive, and I have seen shelves with more overspill than yours. Have you noticed how often glossy home magazines like *Interiors* and *Period Living* feature rooms with exquisite books on white shelves? The current issue of *25 Beautiful Homes* (February 2021) has a cover of bookshelves stacked with old Penguins. I like the way your books range from Brecht to Broch's The Death of Virgil and Charlotte Bronte's Villete to George Mackay Brown, Lenny Bruce, John Buchan's Prester John and Charles Bukowski whom my late brother knew in his years in Los Angeles. My book-haunted imagination is such that I just went into Google and typed in *Books in a room on bookshelves* which led me here. Recently I have started buying Edwardian books with embossed covers and spines such as an abridged *Don Quixote* and GA Henty's *The Lion of the North: A Tale of Gustavus Adolphus and the Wars of Religion* and Henty's *Saint Bartholomew's Eve*. Graham Greene, who read Henty as a boy, said he often dreamed of second hand bookshops. Two of my favourites shops are Voltaire and Rousseau's and Caledonia Books in Glasgow and Moss Books in Henrietta Street, Cheltenham. Don't miss *Allan Massie: Toast to Sir Walter Scott 1990* KZfaq, the best thing I have heard in a year.

It's so nice that you're surrounded by all these books and that you share your parents' taste to some extent. My parents have always encouraged my reading but they don't read a lot themselves, and unfortunately our tastes are vastly different. My mum reads exclusively chick lit and trashy erotica (I like some chick lit every now and then but most of hers are mildly misogynistic) and my dad mostly reads economical politics and I'm interested in politics but not the economy. When they die pretty much all of their books will go, I think.

There's something wonderfully ironic about someone (jokingly) saying they don't listen to physical music anymore because of course they don't this is the digital age, while also purportedly owning over 3,000 books because of course they do, when most books can be owned digitally as well now. I know they're not actually the same and maybe it's because it's just so early for me but the apparent disconnect there was just hilarious. Maybe that was the point and I missed the intent but still got the joke, all I know for sure right now is that the more I think about it the funnier it is to me and that alone makes me happy this video exists
@JeansThoughts
@JeansThoughts 4 жыл бұрын
Aha I mean I get it but CDs also require a CD player and often the sound quality isn’t anything special where as physical books are nice. I actually do listen to records because I like the sound 😂 but yeah I get why it’s funny!
@poorlyfleshedskeleton5873
@poorlyfleshedskeleton5873 4 жыл бұрын
@@JeansThoughts Yeah they're definitely not the same in terms of accessibility and also the the type and quality of the experience of either the physical or digital versions, I've just had to think about this kind of thing a lot because I've moved a lot recently (and will again soon hopefully for the last time for quite a while) and people have also just always given me crap for not digitizing my books, music, or movie collection (I really like having physical copies of everything still.) So that's kind of why my first reaction was, "wait, both can be digitized." But if it means making more room for books, I fully support tucking away a CD collection to make room!

Folio editions are delightful but DAMN they're expensive. I wanted their HP Lovecraft limited edition cos it looked like a thing of wonder but I couldn't justify spending *that* sort of money on it. Especially since I've owned so many editions of Lovecraft as it is...

my mom has a huge collection of books as well. gives me anxiety, really. I mean, 3000 books... I don't even read 100 books a year. That would take me 30 years to read. xD

I mean I highly doubt I’ll read all of these aha I don’t even feel the need to as they’re mine, my mums and my dads aha. Some of them are just memories.
