How about a video about grief in ancient myths. I would love to see if your experience with grief has changed the way you read stories with grief. Or if you’d rather not mix topics, I understand. I will watch all any video and agree that grief and mental health are so important to talk about. It helps remind us that we’re not alone. You have tons of internet friends along with those in real life that care about you ❤️

To be honest I don't think I want to blur the topics right now. Maybe in the future, but it's all still very raw for me just now. Thanks for asking though :). And thanks so much ❤️

When my grandmother died three years ago it hit me very hard. We were very close. I think one of the hardest things to except was exactly what you said “this is my new normal”. For the longest time I kept waiting for life to get back to normal but accepting that life was profoundly altered was one of my biggest hurdles. I applaud you for being kind enough and brave enough to share you mental health and grief experience with us.

I’m currently rereading The Song of Achilles (one of my top-five books of all time), and I read Circe earlier on this month. Just learned about your podcast, so I search it on iTunes and am thrilled to see Madeline Miller as a guest. So cool! Very excited to give it a listen. ✌🏻

My dad ( Charlie) died March 2017. Grief hits me at weird times. I'd 🤗 hug you if I could as I'm in London but all my family are back home in Ireland.

Sending bookish hugs for you too Xxx Even though it does get easier to deal with you never really "get over " it ❤️ Especially someone so important in your life like your dad ❤️❤️(My dad passed away 9 years and I still miss him so much) xx As a wise Ol' bear once said "How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard" ❤️❤️Xxx

I'm glad you're in a better place now, my dad passed away 11 years ago and I still feel grief. It will always dip and you'll feel it to different degrees. but in a way losing someone let's you think about them, learn things about them and appreciate them in a way that it's hard to when you have the person with you. I use books and music particularly to think about my dad and it's amazing being able to have these kinds of things :)

Iv'e just discovered your channel and what a discovery it is :) I'm heading into a Classics MA at Newcastle this September so lets hope i can emulate your passion and success. On grief, I can only offer personal experience, but for me grief has dulled with time but never left. I lost my mother when i was thirteen and turned to reading to escape and help managed my mental health. Iv'e learned that i will never fully come to terms with her death and i don't want to either. For me, closure suggests that you box them off and arrive at a state of comfortable amnesia...iv'e found that coming to terms with the loss as a constant in my life has helped me to accept what happened and live with it, instead of trying to pretend that my grief can be eliminated. Closure's not worth having. Sorry for the essay, seems slightly weird leaving a comment like this to someone i don't know but i related to your situation. I'll be following this channel as long as it lasts, i hope you keep pumping out the content, good luck!

I lost my dad very suddenly earlier this year and am still struggling with it majorly. I've recently discovered Griefcast - a podcast which consists of a different comedian in each episode talking about somebody who they've lost. It is a serious podcast but quite lighthearted at some points and this has helped me majorly. I can relate to so many of them! Give it a listen x

One of my favourite myth is the one of Persephone & Hades. I love this one, especially the complexity of it, not just "oh, the evil god kidnapped her" but also the domineering mother, the fact that the young goddess did eat the pomegranate when she knew she was not allowed to etc... I thought it was more complex than it seemed at first. Did you do an episode on that Jean ? Thanks !

The podcast was so fun to record! I’m picking up THE MERE WIFE this weekend, but I still need to pick up Beowulf spark notes. Lol! I’m really interested in how different authors approach retellings, so if you ever got Jeanette Winterson on your pod to talk about WEIGHT, I would melt with joy. Or Kamila Shamsie. Or Rick Riordan. Just so many options.

..When I was sixteen (..thirty-seven now - eek!! lol), I'd lost my father to Leukemia and had enrolled in a grief recovery session at my church which had helped stem an emotional tide.. After the session, yes - grief management had been a full-time job, but despite this, I'd managed to earn a graduate degree, write two novels, and travel Europe!! Hence despite a loss (...and my apologies, Jean), The Best Is Yet to Come!! Proof: Ph.d student, Booktuber, Podcaster, etc..?? Wow!! Please keep it goin' (..and we're rootin' for you!!), and All the Best!!

I lost my mother at age 57 and my dad at age 33 so I empathize with your grief it is a process and never leaves but does lessen and your memories pop up every day. It is hard but it has made me better equipped to help others. It is a unique experience to everyone- you will go through it your way but you will make it through. You are not alone- hugs to you from across the pond❤️

Thank you for being so honest. It's so easy to hide our struggles, especially online. It would be wonderful and such a brave thing to do to share your experience. Good luck with your PhD deadline. I'm still battling with my MA dissertation and all I want to do is read my own books. I just bought The World's Wife on your recommendation, can't wait to read it!

I've never thought of grief as a rollercoaster before but that is definitely a good way of describing it. Personally, I would welcome a video about grief as I've found talking about it rather impactful in helping understand grief, and try to make sense of it. I also really ought to get around to listening to your podcast.

Congratulations, Jean, on getting half-way to your Phd! It's a very impressive achievement. Yes, I think you should be do videos on the topic of grief. You're right on how so many of us live our lives as in denial of its centrality of it to our lives.

I would love to see more videos on grief if they aren't too hard for you to make. I lost both my parents in my early twenties and I felt very alone as hardly anyone my age has been through it. Your relationship with your dad sounds lovely, you obviously loved him a lot. It's something that comes in stages, you can be fine for ages then often something silly brings it all back xx

I would definitely be interested on a video on grief. I do think we (if they are comfortable of course) should talk about it more because it is a taboo and yet it is part of life. And a difficult part of life at that. Looking forward to your PhD videos as well, I find it really interesting! :)

Why do I have a feeling the author you might be talking about it Pat Barker?! I hope it is anyway - I can't wait to read 'The Silence of the Girls' I only started watching you earlier this year so whilst I've heard you speak about your Dad I didn't know the story behind it, I'm glad you're better now but like you said I think it's important to talk about it all (when you're ready) so people know it isn't a linear process. Would be interested to hear about your PhD, I'm going to study for my Masters this year and I'm very excited!

Thank you so much for sharing your reflections on grief and mental health! It's so important to break down the stigma around this - and you're doing a great job making it normal to talk about. So, thank you so much for this!
