I learned more fundamentals in my first few months at Acrylic University than in my previous 7 years trying to learn to paint well. The best money I ever spent, and there is always something new every month to keep it fresh.

Soooo true. I do this. Loose and bold then "correct" myself. And I kick myself. Doing it a lot builds that confidence, I think... Encouraging to me. Put in time. Thanks, Jed😀 .. give myself time limits and bigger brush.

I’m not a painter per se, but what i have learned in my trade over the years are: 1) a big part of staying loose is actually control (as in control over your mind) - knowing what you want beforehand (this is where experience comes in) will allow you to get ‘in’ and ‘out’ of the piece easily and comfortable throughout the process. This will help you see the bigger picture always, even when you’re working on the details. 2) Understand that giving emphasis to a select portion rather than the whole is beneficial. If everything is in focus, then nothing is the focus. This idea of ‘contrast’ can be applied almost everywhere - contrast of value, colour, form/ shape, weight, details etc.. 3) Having considered every aspect of the piece - the background, corners, edges, supporting elements, etc - does not mean that it has to be seen visually.

Paint fast as well to allow freedom to be express even if it is for a couple of mins.. There should be no judgement of the outcome but allow the hand to move to where it needs to move to.
