You just saved my ass. I tried replacing the tensioner pulley and heard something fall and just put the boat in and couldn’t figure out what was going on and I came on your video and realized I needed to hunt for a spacer! Thank you seriously

Neat video, It's funny how on the new pulley, they just added a couple of letters after the old part number.

That's a pretty common thing you'll see on a lot of engineering documents and parts to represent interchangeable revisions of the same part over time. I would normally expect to see something a little more logical, like my original pulley being an "A" rev, and perhaps my replacement being up to a "D" because of "reasons", but I guess Chrysler decided that "AE" is the correct revision level. I'm hoping that doesn't mean they ran through the entire alphabet once, looped back again, and are already up to "E" the second time. I'm going to guess it makes sense in a way I simply don't understand. Like Rev level A, supplier E.

I'd be willing to bet it's dealer-only and discontinued a long time ago. If you absolutely want the factory part, a junkyard would be your best bet. That said... I don't think there is anything special about it. You should be able to get something pretty close from your local hardware store, or McMaster-Carr, and adjust it to fit properly.

@@Elijah-dh7qg Frustratingly, the factory manual doesn't specify a torque on that bolt. I'd probably go with 35ft/lbs for that size of fastener.

So did you ever figure it out? I think my sound is coming from my alternator. What’s your guess on the torque for the alternator pulley bolt?
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 2 жыл бұрын
I ended up replacing both idlers and the alternator. All of that is in the playlist for The Jeep (linked in the description). Then, _once_ this spring, the belt chirped on start-up. 🤦‍♂ I quite suspect this pulley's bearing has very little grease in it. I don't think I popped the seals off to check, but I should have. If it gets worse I'll just replace the bearing. No clue on the alternator pulley bolt. My replacement alternator came with a new pulley.

@@dad3562 If you have a little bit of time on your hands, pull both idlers, pop the seals off, and grease them up. You might get out of it for no money. My alternator was an unrelated issue.

Chuckin' parts without correct diagnosis......HMMMM. Put a stethoscope on the idler pulley bracket to determine if that is the problem. Check idler bracket, PS housing, water pump housing, etc to determine source. Squeak...normally not bearing, more likely belt slippage on smooth pulley (not toothed sprocket, obviously) cold start. Did you check initial belt tension??? Bad idler typically gives grinding noise as bearing fails. Those idler pulley bolts are famous for seizing breaking on initial removal. Good move to anti-seize on re-install.

Oddly enough, this is the project that caused me to buy a stethoscope. 👍 Both idler bearings were bad.

I can document the history on mine back to about 20,000 miles so I would assume everything you see in the video is how it came from the factory. Is it needed? 🤷‍♂️

@@TheBrokenLife yes it's needed. the pulley would rub on the back if you don't have some sort of a spacer. Sadly, I'm trying to find that spacer, and am about to just get a bunch of washers. :(

Hi, Please watch my 2012 ML350. Do you think the noise is because of idler pulley? This comes only during cold starts (only first start in the morning and not later starts). Moreover it does not come in the summer or warm weather. I just replaced the PCV valve and intake gaskets due to P2279 error. This noise was there even before replacement but till date has never been an issue. I also changed serpentine belt an year back. Please tell me what you think after watching the video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n5hiq62Cx6-co4E.html

The best way to find out is to start it up without the belt installed and see if the noise is there. Then you at least know its in the accessory drive.
