Yes! Great video, had random cylinder misfires just like this on a 2001 4.0 Jeep Wrangler with AT. Had a new aftermarket crankshaft position sensor, all the other things too, new plugs, new coil, checked all injectors for resistance, etc etc. Saw this video along with another one from South Main Auto Repair, both said to use the factory original Mopar part, so I took the chance, replaced the aftermarket crankshaft position sensor with the factory piece and problem solved! Thanks for posting the video! Great videos as always!

Gotta rewatch this whole video, this is exactly what's going on with mine to a certain extent. These are the exact codes I have on my 97 jeep grand Cherokee. Edit: exact codes and problem Edit 2: disconnected the CPS to see which part I have to pick up. Reconnected to get to the store, and jeep is running great. Misfire problem I've been chasing for months is finally gone. Thanks SD

Thank You I like your video. I was waiting 3 years to put a new wiring harness in mine and finally installed super heavy duty cables.did a bran new Bosch alternator which are hard to find and a bran new starter and battery today. What a difference when I turn the key. I got the harness for 200.00. I think it came from Vegas I need to check paperwork. Was well worth it. There are a few great custom wire companies out there but I'm happy I picked the one I did. I just did my crank sensor and doing my Bosch iridium plugs and coil pack next week. So I can relate watching your video.

The Premium Channel is where it's at, guys - no better bang for your buck out there, I can guarantee you that! Caleb is going to be a world-class tech in no time flat. I wish I had been learning this stuff at his age - problem is, OBD-II didn't exist back then! LOL :D I'm finding it's alot harder to retain things as I age, compared to when I was in my mid to late teens. That's what makes ScannerDannerPremium so great - I can go back and watch the vids 100x if I need to, until it "sinks in" as they say. I find it beneficial every so often to start over watching Chapter 1, and go through all the lectures to the end, just to make sure I've got it. I still have a long way to go, but I'm alot better off now than where I was before the channel and the book! No question I'll continue my subscription, even after I've got the stuff down pat - we never stop learning, and having it there to look upon when I need it is WELL worth the asking price! Thanks again, for all you do for us Paul!

Thank you Paul - God bless you as well! Sounds like you and I are alot alike - I've struggled with that my entire life. I can still recall comments made to me 35 years ago, and they still cut deep. Pointless to dwell on that, I've learned, but still doesn't make it any easier - it's just the way I'm wired. I overlook all the great things that have happened in my life, and focus on the negative. I guess that's just human nature. You're only human, Paul! :) Don't let the trolls discourage you! You're one in a million - there are probably a handful of people on this planet that put forth the effort to help others as much as you do! What I've seen on KZfaq (and the internet as a whole) is that even if God Himself posted a PERFECT video, there would still be negative comments and thumbs-down votes! The net is a strange place. I always tell my friends, if you want to lose faith in humanity, sell things on Craigslist - I don't know what it is about the internet, but it brings out the strange in some people! LOL

excellent find and description, ive replaced my crank sensor and i got no felt with it. something i will need to check. ive replaced about everything on my 1996 jeep and breaks down under load in gear, i replaced with a new distributor, sensors on throttle body, exhaust uppers and lowers, fuel pump, plugs, ill do plug wires too i think. for people who have little money this is a wonderful video. we all are not well off. i will re look at crank sensor adjustment. after my jeep cut out i put a new crank sensor in, i started jeep ran like new, switched it off thinking great work have a coffee. that was it never ran properly since the first start. and months of replacing stuff has not fixed the jeep. ive had no car, and until it wont go after 10 years of reliability im lost with out it.

Speaking of of air-gap impediments, I have an oil leak in the transmission that gets on the sensor and returns Interim Cam/Crank Disconnects. But now, I don't think oil's a problem interfering with the magnetic sensing. I've been driving it for a long while under that condition but now, the missing is out of control on all cylinders (like your situation), the coil's good, with cam and crank sensors both replaced within the last 2 years. I'm thinking to replace the crank again.

On the green crank trace I noticed usually the first of the four pulses was dropping out when you increased rpm, my first thought was to far away for the sensor to pickup the detail under rpm. Is there any discernible difference in wave form to determine if its too close or too far or just smashed up?

Whats really funny is that it took probley hundreds of electrical/electronic engineers thousands of hours to design that ignition system. But when there is a fault the mechanic has to know how the system works and there are hundreds of different designs, how to go about troubleshooting it and then how to fix the problem. This takes someone with the qualifications of a college degree'd engineer. how many people are out there that can do this type of repair????? There are only so many Danners, Ivans, Eric O's,

It’s critical these days to have some kind of way to research the system. Sometimes an OEM just does weird things, and MOPAR especially. They’ve paired with so many other OEMs, and you can see the various design and engineering philosophy differences between model years. Vehicles have different virtual modules inside one physical controller, different communication protocols, etc, etc. I actually found this video because I was trying to find a way to look at the secondary patterns on this quasi waste spark coil on plug ridiculousness...

How is the adjustment done with those sensors so as not to hit the flywheel? Does the CPS air gap apply to jeep renix engines? The sensors for those engines do not have an elongated bolt mounting holes. The CPS should have .5v when cranking. Mine has .2v but starts. What issue could be the result of .2v? thanks in advance

Hey Brother, Ive' had my Grand Cherokee Laredo 2001 since begging.. 145K miles. Done most of my own work on it.. Hasn't been to problematic. But living in Texas, and not long ago the radiator cracked and leaked out all fluid(replaced it 8 years ago). Got it home, but it heated up past temp max. Was receiving code P0307 - Missfire on Cylinder 7. Did some troubleshooting and swapped spark coil 1 w #7 and it moved to #1. So replaced Ignition Coil. All good? No more codes and replaced 4 sparks on right side of V8. But now it Idles bad. It's noticeable right away to me, because I had it for years. At first thought it was a misfire or a piston not firing, But now think It might be fuel related. Will check fuel pressure and replace Fuel Filter(Fuel Pressure Regulator) JGC 2001 has them both in one. No engine codes. It starts and ides for 4-5 min roughly.. t hen eventually goes idle high then low and dies. Using Torque App on Android and OBDII. I think I successfully loaded all GCJ PID codes. Nothing red comes up on real time data. Any suggestions? Tanx

Very informative! I have a 95 Cherokee which runs pretty good, and its getting better with every fix I've been able to do on it (Crank sensor being one of them). One thing that has been robbing horse power is a weak spark, and I am not sure what is causing the weak spark (purplish orange, almost no blue). All the grounds and positive connections are good, and I have replaced the coil. Any suggestion would be helpful. Thank you
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 жыл бұрын
an orange spark is not necessarily a weak spark. a narrow air gap will give you an orange look to the spark. The distance the spark can jump is a better indicator. It should jump at least a half inch, with ideal being around an inch. I am betting on your low power complaint NOT being spark related.
@Presto218
@Presto218 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, well I will have to review it again to see how far the spark will jump. I hope to get a better (more blue) spark anyways, because then the engine will get a better burn. I am considering testing with another coil, since there's always that off chance of any aftermarket replacement being crappy from the start.

Never in park or neutral. Giving it gas brings it back to even. I changed the pcm, the cam sensor, coils, plugs, serp belt. It will also jerk coming from low rpms up a hill. High rpm it runs great. Hi I have a 2007 Liberty 3.7L V6, 117,000 miles. Owned it since 67,000 miles. It operated perfectly for the first 30,000 miles and then it started getting a #1 Cyl misfire code P0301. It also seldomly gets a #1 cyl fuel injector circuit open P0201. It must be a very mild fault as the misfire freeze frame data shows it always happens at less than 350 rpm and when cleared it comes back immediately at next startup, cold or hot. So it seems to only happen once on startup as its moving up to regular idle speed. The miss isnt noticeable when driving or idling. Its getting 15.5 mpg fuel mileage. Doesnt burn oil. Doesnt smoke. Has great power. I've changed plugs and coils but no difference. Cleaned air intake, air filter, and ran cleaner through system. I've cleaned and inspected the injector plug and all wires but no difference. Dry / wet compression test of #1, 3 and 5 cylinders all read good: 160 / 175 psi. I'm wondering if there's a mild wire defect for that injector, or just a flakey connection somewhere. Has anyone tried to use a new set of compatible gauge wires and run them to a place closer to the injector control? I can't see where the wires go though. I'm not sure if I should just live with this, or troubleshoot it more. I don’t care about the engine light as we don't have emission requirements. Now that I know the compression is good, I'm not so worried about it. Any suggestions of what to do next? Thanks!

Great vid! I have a 02' wrangler that is having similar issues. Missfire on idle occasionally sets code for missfire and o2 heater and gets hot after running for a while. New t-stat new water pump. Could the missfire lead to higher engine temps?
@ScannerDanner

I'd focus on the overheat first. Could be a head gasket issue, which could also set misfire codes.

I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, which I know I should replace, but I have little to no reason to at the moment. Though, I have a rather huge reason to now. Just recently, my Wrangler died on me, on I-85(just north of the metro Atlanta-area, in the dead middle of traffic), but no fault codes ever generated from the ECU. The Wrangler wouldn't crank back up and run, even though the battery had a good charge, and the engine was turning over extremely well(still, not one fault code) Once one of the "HERO" Units helped me push it off of the road and to the shoulder, it stupid vehicle cranked(almost immediately, but still no fault codes). I had an issue a few month later, after leaving a Starbucks in Rome, GA, where my Wrangler refused to start. The vehicle turned over, again, extremely well, but the engine would fire to life. Even then, no error codes. All of this was approximately three years ago. Well, today, of all days, as I was cranking my Jeep Wrangler(to see it running as well as possible, as I rarely leave home(due to disability; always remember: Never, ever just leave a motor vehicle "sitting", without cranking it, running it, and driving it, even for just 5 to 15 minutes. I shouldn't have to say that, but experience has taught me Albert Einstein might have been correct(if he even really said the following) when he stated: "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." ...but, I digress...) an error code finally generated. It was error code P0351. So, thankfully, I finally have a place to start to try and correct this. Now I just need to finally replace my current JK Wrangler with a Wrangler Rubicon. Thank you for posting this video. Great work.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 2 жыл бұрын
okay, first, if it doesn't crank (no starter engagement) and the battery is fully charged, it will never be the alternator that will cause that. Second, the P0351 code, you are on the right video my friend. I have other Jeep videos with this primary ignition code too

So I found out the hard way after rebuilding a 01 4.0 grand Cherokee engine that the crank sensor was suppose to have an air gap, set the sensor in just a bit too far and nipped the tip and got the intermittent signal loss for cam or crank sensor code as well as a bad miss, the miss didn't come til about a min before shutdown on the 30 min engine break in. Put in a new sensor making sure it wasn't too far in this time, I'm now getting a misfire on cyl 6 code, watch the misfire counter on the scan tool and its a pretty consistent miss. the trans is shifting a bit higher in rpm than it should, also a bit harder than it should as well, could this crank sensor be too far away and causing these issues? The plugs are new and have resistance tested the coil rail, each coils primary windings tested out of spec, actual - 2.5 ohms on all coils, target - .71 - .88ohm, secondary windings tested in spec on all. I'm really scratching my head with this, I don't have any scopes, just a dvm and an autel mx808 scan tool. Ive watched 3 or 4 of your jeep cam crank sensor videos and just don't know what direction my next step should be, any insight you could lend would be greatly appreciated my friend. Keep up the truly awesome work that you do Danner, you are a blessing and an asset to so many people like me.

Alternator and coil pack replaced. PCM replaced with mopar upgrade software. Came to me like this. What's up?

I had an engine changed out. When they buttoned things up, they stripped the mount bolt of the crank sensor and I later found they epoxied to "hold" it in place. In two months, I suddenly had a horrible mechanical noise under the hood. It was the sensor bouncing loose on the flywheel teeth. It never even threw a code but the sound made you think a rod had broke.
