The Fast Lane Car 12:03 This is a random question, but are you sure this is a feature that cuts off all 4 tires from spinning? Or is it simply just a lack of torque? I also live in CO and actually live really close to this actual trail myself. I've always been taught that when all 4 wheels freeze up like that, it's because of a lack of torque to the wheels (in other words, not enough low gearing in 4 low or just an engine that cannot produce enough torque). It happens to me too and also a lot of off road vehicles, and when elevation takes away engine torque due to reduced engine aspiration, it just makes the situation worse :/ Regardless nice video! :) Love you guys bunches! I'm just wondering if this is the case
@TFLcar
@TFLcar 6 жыл бұрын
Great Question and we decided to test this as well. We drove the Renegade up a very steep hill (much steeper than GMH) but with traction. No problem, no cutting of torque. We also asked the Jeep engineers about this and they said the AWD system cuts power to the wheels to protect the drivetrain.

The wrangler would lose When there is no differential lock, the 4wd system would likely get stuck in mud or in the air on a “rear trail? Whereas the more adaptive awd systems of the Renegade and Compass can send the torque to the necessary wheel. They all have low range, they all have good enough grand clearance and pretty good angles. The wrangler would definitely lose. Just because it says wrangler doesn’t mean it’s amazing off road.
@NotSure876

Zack Hall My stock 2000 TJ with 31”s and disconnected sway bar went places the renegade or compass couldn’t even make it to the trail head. Lockers are overrated. All you gotta do is apply the ebrake slightly to get the same result. Clearance, angles and articulation on the wrangler are far ahead of either of these.

My renegade is almost identical to the one they tested. I tell you what, when i went out to buy a new car, i wanted to get a car. I was looking for something that was good on gas, good in snow, and dependable. I want thinking truck or SUV, I was thinking Awd little car. I left with a renegade because it had more than I wanted but was also cheaper than a Subaru that I was also looking at. This "little guy" passes most traffic in Canadian snow storms, and can go from 75 down the interstate to a muddy path in a snap without pissing away your gas. I does everything I NEED it to do.

@norfolksouthernrailworks1543
@norfolksouthernrailworks1543 2 жыл бұрын
@@jarredl990 Actually I would have to agree with Danny, it also can depend on the weight of the vehicles. One of the drawbacks Wrangler vs Renegade in mud is the fact that the Wrangler, especially with bigger suspension and heavier drivelines, can sink in easier. The Renegade was built for light weight, which unfortunately made the Wrangler unsuitable for the hill climb because of the heavier weight making it roll easier.

How about this for an idea - Jeep: how about a real transfer case with an actual low range and not one with a pseudo low range, which just locks the transmission in 1st gear and makes the torque converter do all the work? Will you guys ever turn traction control off? It's really a shame you are not using these 4x4s as they were designed to be off road. For instance from the Compass user manual pages 137-138: Partial Off (Four-Wheel Drive Models) Or On (TwoWheel Drive Models) This mode is entered by momentarily pushing the “ESC Off” switch. When in “Partial Off” mode, the TCS portion of ESC, except for the “limited slip” feature described in the TCS section, has been disabled, and the ESC OFF Indicator Lightwill be illuminated. All other stability features of ESC function normally. This mode is intended to be used if the vehicle is in deep snow, sand or gravel conditions, and more wheel spin than ESC would normally allow is required to gain traction. To turn ESC on again, momentarily push the “ESC Off” switch. This will restore the normal “ESC On” mode of operation. NOTE: To improve the vehicle’s traction when driving with snow chains, or starting off in deep snow, sand or gravel, it may be desirable to switch to the “Partial Off” mode by pushing the “ESC Off” switch. Once the situation requiring ESC to be switched to the “Partial Off” mode is overcome, turn ESC back on by momentarily pushing the “ESC Off” switch. This may be done while the vehicle is in motion. Full Off (Four-Wheel Drive Models Only) This mode is intended for off-highway or off-road use when ESC stability features could inhibit vehicle maneuverability due to trail conditions. This mode is entered by pushing and holding the “ESC Off” switch for five seconds when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is running. After five seconds, the ESC OFF Indicator Lightwill illuminate and the “ESC OFF” message will appear in the odometer. Push and release the Trip Odometer button located on the instrument cluster to clear this message. In this mode, ESC and TCS, except for the “limited slip” feature described in the TCS section, are turned off until the vehicle reaches a speed of 35 mph (56 km/h). At 35 mph (56 km/h), the system returns to “Partial Off” mode, as described above. TCS remains off. When the vehicle speed drops below 30 mph (48 km/h), the ESC system shuts off. ESC is deactivated at low vehicle speeds so that it will not interfere with off-road driving however, ESC function returns to provide the stability feature at speeds above 35 mph (56 km/h). The ESC OFF Indicator Lightwill always be illuminated when ESC is off. To turn ESC on again, momentarily push the “ESC Off” switch. This will restore the “ESC On” mode of operation.

Someone cited the same thing on the Mazda CX-5 from Mazda's engineering blog and yet these vehicles stand with pitiful off-road reviews. I understand you want to represent a layman taking these vehicles to task but a quick leaf through available materials on these vehicles could have shown that there is actual added value to the packages and not lipstick on a pig.
@icosmicvii3568
@icosmicvii3568 5 жыл бұрын
The traction control was off 🤔. This is also from the manual. “Full Off” is the only operating mode for ESC in 4WD LOW range. The ESC system will be in this mode whenever the vehicle is started in 4WD LOW range or the power transfer unit is shifted into 4WD LOW range.

The Compass and Renegade both can fit and have the proper brackets for the 3.7L V6, but the whole point of these vehicles in the minds of FCA is to make SUV's that appeal to the economic mind, not the Jeeper mind. That doesn't stop Compass and Renegade users from having fun with them though. Those engines can produce a mean amount of torque considering 180 hp. That 9 speed gearbox is slower 0-60 given the lower range gearing, but, the gear shifting is definitely smooth and the amount of gears helps keep the engine in optimum RPM for Fuel efficiency

They didn’t dumb down nothing! It is good. It was good before the torque vectoring. Out of the front wheel drive dominant AWD systems out there it’s the only one that doesn’t peel out before it catches traction. I live in the springs, work at a dealer and have tested them in the snow. I’ll repeat Honda’s AWD system is good. If you want to off-road in the Pilot you put it in sand mode. The CRV will go up that with the traction control off, if not on. They raised it 2” don’t get me wrong I love my 96 XJ and it’s 4wd. The new cheaper Jeeps don’t have anything on the CRV.

It is a computer limitation when you use “rock mode”. It limits the power so you don’t slide around and bottom out the car on accident. They just need to leave it in auto or sport and put it in 4 low with the traction control and esp off.

I love this video.. the fact you offroad tested these vehicles is so cool. THUMBS UP! Hillclimb vehicles operate usually in 4x4 at lowwww speed But neither suvs have enough lift/ correct suspension or tires to properly go through that last obstacle. Its really steep and deep. Flooring it wont help. Creating momentum was indeed the best option but be careful not to scrape the undercarriage of those beauties.

This problem wasn't related to traction control. Some vehicles back off on the throttle to prevent driveline damage (or perhaps because they have weak drivelines to begin with?). These Jeeps could have made it, had the vehicle not backed off on the throttle and allowed full power. It's quite common in crossovers, unfortunately.

I think they simply may have screwed up in which mode to choose. I believe in rock mode it will stop you from going over something too difficult or flipping a rock over, and so simply halt like it did here. But if you choose a different mode like mud then the computer won't just cut power as it was doing here. It was an electronic limitation, not a power issue, and thus probably resolvable by reading the owners manual.

A Wrangler is obviously better than these two off roading, especially the more hardcore stuff like stage 3, but these two would drive so much better on road than that bouncy loud brick in the wind Wrangler, especially the Sport which would be around the 30-34k mark and their visibility sucks in comparison. I do love the look and color of that Jeep Compass Trailhawk though. There are not many if any that can drive excellent on both the road and off road that is actually affordable brand new. @PatrickRich

they don't and it doesn't. it just doesn't have enough wheel torque at those engine speeds to be able to brake 2 wheels in the air and have enough left over to turn 2 wheels on the ground on a steep hill. The wheels on the ground are getting the full might that the engine has to offer but at those speeds its insufficient.

Yes Brake Lock Differential is a awesome system but without a true low range it is limited once you're encountering steep terrain or obstacles. I've got a 2011 Liberty (with a true low range), in that application I can go over some ridiculous obstacles with ease because there's always enough torque to turn the wheels. It's a shame they couldn't have put a real low range in these (like the new Cherokee).

This is a good demonstration of the modern approach to off-roading. The cars just throw electronics at the problem, and if that doesn't work, then they just shut down. In the older vehicles, even in stuff as recent as the TJ, if you press the gas, it will go. It will go until something breaks or you get yourself out. That's the big advantage to using an older generation Jeep. They just keep going.
