When we bought a 1998 jeep grand cherokee in February, I noticed while driving in the snow that the ABS was not working, and there was no ABS light lit on the dash. We found that the ABS fuse was pulled and so was the pump plug. We pulled a diagnostic code 30 which means there was no power to the control unit ECU. We found your video through searching the web for code 30. Thanks to your video, we repaired the ECU. The positive pole was dead due to cracked solder. THANKS!!!

Thanks. Did this yesterday, reinstalled it today and the lights out and ABS is working. Saved $1,300 doing it myself.

I watched this video and did this repair about 4-5 years ago when I still had my '98. It worked like a charm, I was surprised a simple reflow job could fix this. I also recoated the area with a few layers of conformal coating to make it somewhat waterproof again. Thanks for your help, a new module at the dealer was like $800 at the time.

@mdsuave13 the module is fitted under the actual ABS unit , you can remove it without draining the brake fluid . you need a little socket and get the 4 screws out . (look with a little mirror ) then it's pretty much sawing , soldering and there you go . its the pump connector wich fails .pump motor and unit never fail to operate. i wouldn't pay either so thats why i got into this .

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with ABS light always on. I replaced the module (used) about 5 years ago and it worked fine till about 6 months ago. I bought another module (rebuilt) from an eBay seller for $60 plus shipping last week. I am having it installed tomorrow morning and will ask for the defective one to repair myself as a spare. Thanks so much for this video.

Thanks to your video, this DIY was quite simple. The hardest part is cutting the cover off and taking special care not to damage the board.

Thanks for the vid. I will try this out today. I resoldered the interior dash light switch panel just about 2 months ago. I hope the ABS problem is just the solder points. Easy fix, saves hundreds of dollars.

@mishnishfourseventy1 thank you for sharing your experience , in your case i think you should recheck all connections and plugs etc sometimes the pump connector breks the new solder when you put it back on . so i could be you have to do this again , another thing is the relay under the bonnet . you should tap on it or change it with the ac relay to see if it is broken or damaged

@esjayay the cruise control uses 1 sensor in the gearbox and it uses the wheel speedsensors which are also the abs sensors . if your abs is not functional your cruise control can be out of function . so check your wheel sensors (resistance should be 1120 kohm ) or replace the gearbox speedsensor.

@curtbeginner i'm sorry there is no sound in this video (and you won't need it also ) this works for ATE brake modules only , this is a repair when you get the ""pump circuit failure "" code (on a jeep ) but if your tahoe has an ATE module it could be the same easy repair . first check simple things like fluid en broken wires . then measure each sensor (should be around 1120K ohm each ) then simply put power on your pump motor , when it starts running your motor is good .

the only thing that needs to be fixed on this , is the high current terminals and sometimes the coil terminals . they usually fail by poor design or to high current going through the abs pump (exceeds 10 amp ) the terminals only need a good resolder and you are good to go

this is the control unit . it is located under the aluminium distributer block with the pump motor on it . when looking at the engine this is under the place where you refill the brake fluid .

you can try to switch no 4 and 5 if the code reappears for injector number 5 , the injector is broken . you can also try measuring voltage on the wires to the injector a common failure are the connectors wich are located on the firewall . they get water in them .

when you hit the brake on mud or ice the pedal should feel like it is vibrating , you can hear a grinding like noise but thats normal .test your abs with two wheels on the road and your other two wheels going throug the side of the road . it should be like above . this vibrating sensation is made by the pump , which takes over control whenever wheels are locking up . it releases the brakes and then pumps them back to high pressure very fast .

@martijnbaarn also check for broken fuse etc , if nothing else seems broken maybe your module is broken . 90 % of time the connections are loose inside the module , just open it up carefully and see what's inside . but a broken sensor is what happens most (all sensors should read around the same resistance , if not the lower or upper measured value is the broken one )

@ddietr yes it could be this unit but that has nothing to do with excesive pedal travel , there must be some air in the system , i know the abs systems are very hard to bleed and get them air free. dealers electronicly manipulate the pump to get the air out .

@esjayay you should get rid of all the other lights before you can diagnose the abs system . basic systems must be good and checked . the rear brake shoes and front brake pads must be in a fair condition . the brake fluid must be at the specified level and the sensors should all be in reasonable state. the hydraulic units on a (grand ) are very strong and pretty much bombproof (unless water got in it )

@jfnovae i apologize for answering very late :P but the sensors are easy to install . a professional mechanic should do one sensor in less than 20 minutes a diy mechanic should do it in half an hour , the sensors are easy to change and no further precautions should be made other than secure your vehicle when working underneath it !

@timal74 yes you can see clearly what's wrong wit the terminals , i looked to them trough a microscope and they were crakced all the way which causes the pump circuit to fail and give you the amber light . did you know this method often works on other devices from cars etc where strong currents go over a cicuit board

so....reading all of this i would say , first check out if the abs warning light is still there and make sure the car is really equipped with abs (sensors etc ) then as a next step you have to confirm the abs fuse and wiring are allright . when still nothing happens you should try to swap the abs computer for another similar one (no damage can be done doing this ) in the worst case your abs system is put off in the engine ecu , this can be undone only with a good reader or dealership

hoi , je kan het best eerst even kijken met een stukje van een spiegeltje , dan kun je beter zien hoe het zit . de boutjes zijn een soort sterkopjes sommige dopjes passen er wel op en andere niet meestal werkt een 12 kant dopje prima officieel moet je eigenlijk een E4 dopje hebben , dat is net zoiets als torx maar dan aan de buitenkant . het blijft een gepruts in ieder geval maar het kan echt !

@ lewis , i dont know if you can keep driving your dodge , you have to make really sure the brakes work as they are intended to do . you should get the car to a proffesional mechanic if you are not sure before driving it .

this can be caused by a stuck ABS relay or a short circuit in your abs control unit just open it up to see if it can be repaired

@ddietr there is no sound any more because of bad comments on my voice / speech but for your jeep : are all sensors good ? just measure them is the pump allright ? just put power on it (12 volt ) and if your unit is an ATE unit it could very well be this problem

Vielen, vielen Dank. Bei meinem JGC 98 ist dank der Anleitung die ABS Lampe aus und kein Fehlercode mehr abgelegt. Nach dem Tausch eines ABS Sensors, der Prüfung der Pumpe und finden von 3 kalten Lötstellen auf der Platine ist nun endlich der Fehler weg.

Hi, there. I´m from Agerntina. i´ve got a jeep cherokee sport 98. the abs warning light turned on.I took my car to service and they told me i had to change the computer or drive my car without abs. The problem now is that when i brake the rear wheels stop each one different. Thanks for your time.

hi , i think you should check te brake pads or linings , maybe they are worn out or damaged . or one of your brake calipers is rusted solid . i don't think this is an abs problem

EXCELLENT and compliment you for mentioning that they are glued! I'm not working on the exact same module but similar and I must be pretty stubborn. I would have maybe kept trying till I broke the unit. Good explanation form throughout. Thank You!

My daughters car is having this problem and I saw your video and read the description, THANKS!Just had a few questions for you if you could answer them I would be very greatful. Is there a component under the silicone that needs replacing? and when you say its the poositive power connection is usually the problem are you referring to a cold or broken solder joint? Is that what I am looking for on the rest of the through hole connections you pointed out in your video?

abs code pump...could be relay switch? Horn, fog lights, Fuel pump works. abs lights stay on.

Thanks! Ik heb vandaag de hele pomp los gehaald, want de boutjes waren dol gedraaid. Klote klusje, uiteindelijk moest zelfs de slijptol erin. Ik heb hem los en gesoldeerd, morgen gaat de boel weer in elkaar. Gaat het lampje gelijk uit, of moet je hem ook nog resetten? Nogmaals bedankt!

I have no sound. We have 2001 JGCL 4.7 L V8 . We replaced all calipers and Master cylinder. Could it be this unit ? The pedal goes half way to floor before engaging.

Hi, thanks for the vid to start off with! I have a question, my hydraulic control unit (jeep gc 2000) is running constantly even when the car is off (runs battery down unless terminals are taken off) it sounds just like a small compressor. The ABS light is on, any idea as to what is causing this?

I have a Jeep Grand Cheeroke Laredo, 1998, engine 4.0 6L, equipped with ABS. The ABS does not work at all; besides that, the light on the board never turns on; not when the switch is on nor when the engine is turned on. I can see the sign of ABS on the board but only if I look at it with a flashlight. I connected a code reader that checks the ABS but it says that there is no communication, it cannot find the ABS. Where do you think this problem comes from?

I have a problem with ABS-1999Jeep GC 4.0 4x4. When I stop on the road its fine, when I'm on a dirt road or ice and hit the brake pedal, the pedal feels like it doesn't want to brake, like some kind of grinding feeling is pushing the brake pedal back out and I really have to push to keep it down. I believe I put in the right CV axelshafts with the right tone rings so what would cause this? Is this what happened to you? I mean is this the way ABS fails?

Question: which pin of the 2-pin ABS motor plug is the +12V side and which is Ground? (e.g. is the outside pin at edge of board pos or neg?). I want to test the motor (it ohms out to about 11.5ohms which seems high) but I don't want to apply reverse polarity, and both motor wires are black. RE: "...go to the corner i point out in the video. This is the corner where the pump connector is. The problem is the positive pump terminal " THANK YOU!

The motor is just a simple DC motor , disconnect it and put 12 volt on the terminals to see if it spins. The motor goes both directions so it doesnt matter if you reverse the + and - The motor usually is not the problem,its the terminals on the board that fail

Thanks for fast reply. You are correct! Removed 2-wire ABS plug from '97 Dodge Grand Caravan w/same type of ABS, with Snap On Ethos scanner showing ABS Code 30 "pump motor circuit". Put on some spare terminals on connector and connected to meter, and with ignition on, measured 0V. Then pressed sideways on connectors and measured ~8V, which is what Ethos scanner data showed as the ABS pump voltage!. Also measured continuity to ground, but only when pressing sideways on the outer terminal. Removed & opened module, and confirmed that outside pin has broken solder connection. The outside pin seems to be GROUND, and the inside pin comes from the FETs/12V inside module for power. Although the board has a "+" symbol near that terminal, it is the outer/ground terminal that is broken on my ABS module circuit board. It is a bit concerning that this part of board seems to be fed by one or maybe 2 Vias ?! Thanks again. I have a close up photo but not sure if I can add it here?

@@chrisaz7567 i have several photos already , with modern day camera its easy to see the solder id broken. I am very glad to hear this helped you out . Remember this because its a common failure on lots of things where wiring comes from circuit boards.

Cautionary note here: Although the MOTOR itself is able to run in either direction, the integrated diode built into the motor can be destroyed by reverse polarity. Inductive devices (relays, solenoids, motors, etc.) typically have a freewheel diode across the coil (normally reverse-biased) to prevent inductive voltage spikes from damaging the drive electronics when the coil current is shut off. It seems likely that the ABS Pump Motor includes such a diode, based on schematic diagrams for Teves Mk 20 type of controllers (e.g. www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/neonfsm/2004/18626-pl-chassis_sgmldiag.pdf page 47). So when testing a ABS pump motor, it's best to identify the polarity. For this ABS unit, the 'outside' motor connector pin (more squared-off one on the plastic 2-pin plug) is the ground side. Hope this helps anyone else reading this. Thanks again.

incidentally, the schematic shown in the aforementioned PDF shows the cathode of the diode going to pin 1 (which the motor plug pinout at the top of p. 43 shows as 'ground'). This actually seems reversed to me. Normally an integrated freewheel diode must be reverse-biased, so the cathode should be going to pin 2 (the power side). In any case, the important point here is that it's best to not reverse the polarity when testing the motor, in the likely case that the motor includes an integrated diode.

yes you can change it , on an jeep you can take it of without bleeding the brakes or losing any fluid .

hi your emergency brake should work , has nothing to do with this . the unit is located in the engine bay , directly mounted at the underside of abs unit . the abs unit is visible but this computer is not . the absunit is on the driverside of your car . the most common error code (DTC) is pump circuit failure and triggers the MIL to stay on (MIl = malfunction indicator light )

So this is simple , open it carefully . Then remove the silicone layer without scratching anything . Take a close look at the board . Then resolder the pump terminals ,they always come loose . Also check the coil terminals as indicated in the vid . Then close the unit and test the vehicle . After testing reseal the unit with some hotglue or household silicone . Abs brake light problem should be fixed now .

And also check the pump motor ,just connect it with 12 volt from your car battey to make sure it runs as it should . Connect leads on the motor on the plug that normaly goes to the pump module . If allright you can hear it making a buzzzzz sound .
