This is the conclusion to the 2020 Jeep Renegade Uconnect 5.0 to Apple CarPlay 8.4 using OEM parts sourced from Infotainment. During our first go round with these parts, we encountered some issues such as a blinking odometer and CarPlay disappearing after a proxi alignment. This is our second attempt and conclusion video. We have a replacement 8.4" screen from Infotainment to install plus we also sourced a new climate control panel so the client could have a volume knob.
**PLEASE NOTE: the OEM 8.4" parts used for this video were part of a beta test and are not currently available for sale to the public**

HOWEVER - there are aftermarket stereo options that will work. Pretty much any iDatalink Maestro compatible radio will work such as the Alpine iLX-407.
***IF YOU WANT AN AFTERMARKET Apple CarPlay or Android Auto radio for you 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 Jeep Renegade - you will need:

Good morning from Texas! Great two part series; hence, our son has a 2017 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk Connect 5.0 with no apple car play. So we want to upgrade with an aftermarket product. Could I ask a few questions? When installed, is the navigation system operational? Thoughts on wireless vs usb port? Actually looking at Alpine or Pioneer 2770NX. Thoughts on average cost for an after market business? (Jeep dealerships not doing upgrades) Thank you and I hope you see this… as it’s for his birthday. Lol. Have a blessed day.

Good afternoon from rainy CT. If you replace the radio, you'll lose the navigation unless of course you purchase an aftermarket radio with GPS navigation built in. Most clients are happily using Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and use the maps from their phone. However, if you're in an area with spotty to no cell service and you need to use GPS navigation in those areas, then you'll want a receiver with the satellite GPS navigation as well. Wireless vs wired. Totally a personal preference. I prefer wired. It's cheaper and I'm always needing to charge my phone. Parts and labor cost is going to vary widely across the country. I'm not sure what labor rates are in your neck of the woods from a professional shop, but you're probably going to be somewhere in the $1,100 - $1,300 range installed with all the necessary installation parts for a basic iDatalink Maestro wired CarPlay radio without GPS (like a Kenwood DMX709s or Alpine iLX-407). Not sure on Pioneer. They got bought out by an investment firm a few years ago and I feel like it just hasn't been the same since.

Did you keep the modified climate control panel to allow for knob control with the final installation? If so, could you provide the part number or link for that as well? Also, is there an adapter you can purchase to allow for wireless control with apple CarPlay? Seriously thinking about doing this mod to our 2017 Renegade, I hate the factory radio controls! Thank you!
@carstereochick
@carstereochick 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Juli! We did not keep the alternate climate controls. Mainly because I wanted to have everything else "factory" for the Maestro module to communicate and work properly. It might have worked, but since it was a new vehicle and still under manufacturer warranty, if the client ever had any issues, I wanted them to have the OEM HVAC controls in the car. I'm not sure if this would be the same module for the 2017, they have a few different variations. The one we tried was part # 07356941380. Keep in mind, we did previously bring the car in to the dealer for a proxi alignment so it had actually been coded to work with the 8.4" touch screen which also works with the alternate climate controls. I don't know if it worked because we had previously had the proxi alignment done? Or if it would just plug and work without any type of coding. I almost forgot to answer your second question. Yes, there are adapters to convert any wired CarPlay stereo to wireless, but truthfully, I'm not huge a fan. The ones I have tried/seen do degrade the sound quality and I'm pretty sure they all work the same where they're doing the audio over Bluetooth (which is why the sound is not as great) and the visual part of CarPlay is done through like a WiFi connection to the adapter that plugs into the stereo's USB port.

It has to do with the programming that the dealer probably didn't do right. Somewhere in the comments section someone explained it. There is a programmer you can buy and do yourself which I had not been aware of. The load resistors are needed to put in aftermarket speakers on a factory, non premium sound head unit, but not for changing the head unit.

Thanks Eric - so unfortunately at this time we don't have an OEM CarPlay upgrade kit that would allow you to just add Apple CarPlay to that OEM radio. Infotainment is definitely working on it, but the Beta test we tried just didn't work out in this particular year/model unfortunately. Technically there are some aftermarket add-on CarPlay modules that are not OEM from companies that we carry like ZZ-2 and Naviks, but the screen size is stretched, it looks a bit funky and there are limitations to adding CarPlay to a system like that rather than swapping the hardware and using a kit that has the features built-in. For example - with a ZZ-2 or Naviks add-on CarPlay kit the features of CarPlay only work when you are actively on that input. They wouldn't override other sources like SiriusXM. Whereas an OEM kit from Infotainment or an aftermarket system like the Alpine iLX-407 would work seamlessly regardless of what source you are listening to. You could go aftermarket like we did and get something with sat based GPS and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, but for it to fit properly, I'd recommend sticking to a standard 7-inch double din. Something with Garmin and wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto that is Maestro compatible and can retain the OEM reverse camera, steering wheel controls and access to vehicle settings would be any Kenwood unit like the DNR476s for example.

@carstereochick 2 жыл бұрын
Do you have audio and CarPlay working? The camera might just start working after a couple sleep cycles. The Wrangler's are like that too for some reason. The blinking odometer is something I couldn't fix and you need to either have a coding tool (which I was unaware of when I started this project and Infotainment told me I needed the dealer to do a proxi alignment to eliminate the blinking odometer). However, someone on this comment thread mentioned another coder so you can do it yourself - Mousa Samuel said he had success using the Alfaobd app. I have not tried it personally, but that may be worth a try and if I was going to try this again, I would try that before bringing it to the dealer. Good luck!

Drill a small hole and they snap in place. catalog.pac-audio.com/catalog/usb-hdmi-aux-extension-cables/usbdma1 We did try to retain the OEM USB with an adapter, but we couldn't get CarPlay or any audio to play through it with the new radio.

@carstereochick
@carstereochick 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, anything is possible, but all depends on how much time/money you're willing to put into it. You'd want to find an installer who's good with custom fabrication. Basically you'd have to fabricate a way to hold the new screen in the dash behind the OEM bezel similar to how the OEM radio mounts. Additionally, the Alpine screen will need some type of trim to fill in the gaps above/below the OEM bezel. You could trim it with thin ABS plastic. We did something like that in a 2012 F-150 for a client that needed to replace his 8" Ford navigation radio (before iDatalink made a mounting kit for those models). We re-used the OEM radio trim and just added some ABS plastic to fill it out: carstereochick.com/2016/02/06/replacing-a-defective-factory-navigation-radio-in-a-2012-f-150-with-kenwoods-ddx9902s/

Dealers typically don't know how to code this stuff, it's all theoretically possible but the dealer has to program the car through a proxi alignment to allow it to accept the new radio. That was the whole issue. We tried an OEM radio in our earlier video that had actually been coded for this VIN and it worked initially, but we had a blinking odometer which happens when the car computer sees a CAN bus communication issue. The proxi alignment took care of that, but in the process something happened where it took out CarPlay on the radio. The dealer suspected it was just a faulty radio, so we got another one, but that one didn't even give us any audio output so we just went aftermarket knowing that the Maestro module would retain all CAN bus communications and we wouldn't have any blinking odometer with the aftermarket radio.

@@alanmoser OEM part sourced from Infotainment. We use their kits in a wide variety of years, makes and models, but this was the first time we tried BETA testing with them. For most cars, the products arrive programmed for the VIN or they include a programming Genie. Sometimes it’s a quick plug and play install, other times we have to just do a sleep cycle. But I think with this communication system there’s more involved in the programming side of it that we just didn’t have access to.

Granted, we can usually figure it out, but sometimes a tech will spend a 1/2 hour to an hour trying to track down the answer online and it turns out the client didn't order it with the right adapters for their car. When they do get it right, I can see how it's an attractive cost effective solution, but these are not products you'd want to build an audio system with (unless you get one with toslink and plan to utilize that feature, but still for that, I'd rather use the Stinger HEIGH10). It's more of a product support thing for me. It's really important to me to sell brands that stand behind their products and that includes having helpful people answer phones when you need an answer to a quick question so you're not wasting anyone's time.
