Matt's Off Road Recovery

We got a call from a couple fans that were stuck in a sinkhole!
They were clear up in Salina Canyon, which is about 3 hours away from us.
They had come out from Denver Colorado to purchase a 5-speed Jeep Cherokee.
Of course, they had to go wheeling on the way home, because it's a Jeep thing!

For those who say this should be aired by History Channel and the likes... Any professional TV show would insist in adding drama and their own spin to the story line. We would lose the great production ran by Matt and team. I say keep History Channel and/or Netflix types out of it! Don't mess up a good thing! But then that is a choice Matt and team would make, I'm just giving my opinion. Great work guys... always well done. Keep it up!

I love watching your videos brother. I'm a mechanic working for the Border Patrol in far west TX. Part of my job duty is having a CDL and running tow truck recovery missions for vehicles that get stuck out in the field. We have an old military 5ton a wheel lift and a couple of roll backs that we use. It is crazy how no two recoveries are the same, I have seen a lot in my 10 years of doing it. Mad respect for what you do brother!!

Matt, I hope you've discovered air bags by now, if not, this was a perfect contender. You could have set a bag or three with some boards in that hole under the car, and once it filled a good bit, slip one down between the "wall" and the fourby. Glide that sucker right out. Please never _ever_ get underneath a load suspended by unstable soil and a recent land shift. Crazy dangerous. I manage construction sites and as far as risk assessment goes, that was an extreme risk of serious injury or death number you did there. Love your work but be safe.

Airbags might have trouble pushing up.. airbags are jacks. You need to jack things up more often. Jacks prevent puttung the alignment out and breaking stuff .here with the crevace below, you can put ramps or boards across the gap, and then jack up to get boards to under it right height. Avoids damage and failed attempts.

He could see that the portion of the road everyone is standing on is still pretty solid, no more risk of that washing out because he's down there than if he were standing on the 'road'. As for the Jeep collapsing down, the whole side of the 'mountain' would have to crumble for that to happen. Considering the Jeep was wedged between two solid pieces of Earth with no room to slide further down without massive amounds of dirt collapsing, there's very minor risk (at least no more risk than standing on the road).

Matt, epic recovery and story. Though I thought perhaps you missed one useful trick? At 15:35 when you added your weight to the rear tyre, I was willing for you to swing the spare wheel carrier and lock it in the open position. There was a nice counterweight there with a heavy wheel on a steel fulcrum. Making an 18" stirrup from a rope to add body weight to the wheel could have helped. Wasn't needed as it turns out, but you know, 'one more arrow in the quiver' for next time. I've been off roading Land Rovers for 30 years in New Zealand - just love your work and the hype free way you present it.
