Jeep Would Just Randomly Shut Off

Had an issue with my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle would just randomly die while running down the road. No warning, just completely shut off. I would lose power steering and everything. I could try to put it in N and start it again. Sometimes it would. Sometimes I would have to pull over to the side of the road.
At first I thought it was a bad fuel pump. But I wasn't getting the surge and lack of power that might be associated with a fuel pump issue. So I ended up taking it to a local mechanic. Once he hooked it up to his scanner he could see that it was an issue with the Crankshaft position sensor. There is a recall for "some" 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees related to this part:

My VIN didn't qualify for this recall. But it obviously had a problem with the sensor. Replacing it did fix the issue. It starts immediately now and runs great. I've made a few trips into town and it hasn't died a single time.

Same happened to me. No car mechanic could find the issue and it's amazing how everybody says "it's the fuel pump", it was so frustrating I was about to give up when finally a neighbor took it to some shop across town and they properly diagnosed the sensor and also did some modifications because the sensor would get lose, got it all snug and has been working fine since. I was so happy when they finally solved the problem.

The guy I took it too, he saw something on the scanner he hooked up to it. But it was a small shop. But the guy has been around for a long time. Just glad to have it running smooth again.

I had the same issue years ago with my Jeep Cherokee. I spent about $3,000 on 3 different shops and they couldn’t find anything. I ended up selling it and found out this same information 3 months after I sold it. I do love jeeps but that was the last time I ever bought another one. Some jeeps even have the plastic radiators that cause issues too. I needed up buying a new tacoma instead.

Yeah, I've had cooling issues with this Jeep quite a bit. Granted it is almost 20 years old, but it seems like the issues have started piling up.

Since the ECU is mounted on the firewall the connections inside the computer get hairline fractures. Pull the 3 main cords off it pull it out bust it up. Remove the silicone waterproof and get your multi meter. Do continuity test

There's a reason why I own a multimeter, code scanner and a fuel pressure test gauge. I did a look up on the part number you provided made me laugh as soon as it showed it having 4.0 engine. This engine is used in multiple models and years, and there are those who could've assisted you had you asked them. Doing a web search would've provided you a link to a Jeep forum that would've provided you the solution as well. Don't be offended, your just not Jeeple. 😜✌

I have had the engine shut down issue for 8 years now and considering everything I have done I am convinced that it cannot be fixed. I honestly think only a god could fix it, and I even question that.

I'd be scared to drive it anywhere. I had my Jeep turn off on I-30. Luckily I was on the right hand lane and could just pull off the road and wait until it would start again. Then it stopped a few times in the middle of town at a red light. Had a few people honking at me that time. I was happy to find the fix for mine.

I went through the same thing.. for a long time... it started with cutting off while I was driving.. then weeks later it did it again . Random, right out of left field, then it started happening every few weeks then Every other week .. Every day....10 x a day.. I replaced almost every thing attached to the motor..lol.. then it happened again.. that's when I said enough.. Jump to moral of story... I FIGURED IT OUT . IT'S A MANUFACTURER DEFECT..

My WK hemi was the crankshaft position sensor, start up on first try everytime now.

Mine just died, I turned the key off and restarted it no problem. A few days later it died and could not get it started. Ended up being a large plug behind ECM coming loose! I replaced the crank senser before finding this problem!

Can you tell me what large plug are you talking about behind ecm? Mine died while running it cranks but no luck TIA

I'm having the same problem with my 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo it runs for awhile then shuts off I have to wait about 20 minutes before it starts again I'm going to replace the crank shaft sensor today thanks for the information

Worth paying forna diagnosis. Nothing worse than the parts cannon and its still not fixed.

Agreed. But I have had instances where some places keep thinking they know what the problem is. So I keep paying for labor and parts and still don't get it fixed. But this time it worked out great...

My 1995 grand Cherokee jeep keeps shutting off when I shift gears while going low speeds. I don't know why it keeps doing. I can still turn the car on but it shut off when I shift. If anyone can explain why please let me know.

Is it an automatic? Or you mean manually shifting gears? Sorry I doubt I can help, but asking a clarifying question for anyone that might can.

@@homestead_diy It has a shifting gears on the bottom. To where you got to put your foot all the way down on the brake then grab the shifter and put it in overdrive is what I normally do. It might have to do with my overdrive because my dad says it doesn't work well.

This and overheating issues have been the biggest problems I’ve had. I’ve got around 160k miles on it

Ive been having this issue for about week now with my 2004 JGC v6 it had shut off at stop light so I threw it in N and cranked back up kept goin and I notice it will kinda struggle to pick up speed if Im driving it I took it to mechanic and it stalled as I was pulling up to the shop to see if they could use scanner on it but my engine light isn’t on so nothing shows up and when the mechanic drove it he said it didn’t do anything with him so I left and right when I turned on my street it shut off

Hope someone is able to figure it out for you. Mine got worse and worse. It got to the point, that I didn't want to leave the house with it.

It's a straight 6, no V6 in any WJ JGC

@@ctdope You are correct. It is a straight 6. I typically do the same thing. I just mean 6 Cyl but say V6. But you are right it is a straight 6. And that's the reason I hate to give up on this jeep. The motor is just awesome. The rest of the jeep is a rust bucket.

@homestead_diy I also have a 2004 GC, but its a 4.7 V8. I got it from PA, shipped to Florida. It has rust from up there sadly. So that means, it's days are numbered shorter than if it was in a western state. I love it, but I know, I won't be able to keep it 4ever. It has its issues also. The computer doesn't seem to like O2 sensors that aren't MOPAR, and MOPAR wants almost $800 to replace all 4. It's crazy how some parts are so expensive for an old vehicle.

@@ctdope The people I bought mine from had moved down from Illinois. So it was exposed to a lot of salt. The big rust spot I have was repaired at one point but rusted out again. It isn't worth it for me to mess with again. When the GC is running good, it is a blast to drive. It would so through just about anything.

Mine was behind the ECM, it could be above it, but there is 2 large plugs, my problem was the larger plug

I had the same thing happen to me. I replaced the fuel pump and then found out what the real problem was, it was a bad computer.

good thought but didn't seem like that was my issue. I've got the same stock gas cap from 20 years ago and it is working fine now. Well as fine as a 20-year-old vehicle will work.
