96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo stalls/turns off when driving (PART 1 OF 3)

My 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo started to stall/turned off randomly after owning it about 8yrs. I was able to pin-point the problem after a few taps...here is how.....check out my video... DONT FORGET TO CHECK PART 2.

Jeep should've had a recall on this problem.I kNEW SIX OW NERS THAT HAD THIS PROBLEM,all owned a six cylinder.They converted the PCU for the eight to run the six,after aging the PCU tried to go back to eight.

I have the same jeep and it was doing the same thing but mine was the Throttle Body sensor and Idle Control Valve. It was a really easy fix and it was only $60. I hope that’s helps people with a Grand Cherokee

Thanks i ended up changing the computer and everything got fixed.

I’m having a similar issue with my 2004 Laredo, but only when coming to stops at traffic lights/stop signs.

Have you tried checking your knock sensors?

So I’ve got the same jeep as you and I’m having the same issues. It starts & stalls I’ve changed the pcm & checked all my sensors. In your opinion what else could it be I’m stumped and I need the help. I am having the same issue as you were having, but the pcm is changed what else could it be

Some people are saying that there are 2 screws in the PCM that if screw very tightly it makes contact with the board and damages it

You have to make sure you got a 8 or six cylinder,as needed. New.

Clean all the connections with electronic cleaner , such as CRC .

Great video mine stalls at stop signs it idles until I'm ready to take of then it quits as soon as I touch the throttle any ideas?

Well, without knowing what kind of maintenance gets done, nobody can really provide a solution. Without information and access to the vehicle how do you expect anyone to provide a solution? It could be as simple as the throttle body and idle air control module needing to be cleaned. Do you want guesses? There's a reason why some own diagnostic scanners and tools. 🤣

I have been dealing with random shut downs for 8 years now. It has been in the shop a dosen times over this and the guy keeps telling me he can't find the problem.I have replaced the computer, all three sensors on the carburetor, replaced the crank position sensor, replaced the distributor and the spark plugs and wires. I have replaced the air filter, the transmission oil and filter and some other sensor I don't remember what it was. I replaced the intake manifold, and the battery. I don't know what the hell there is even left to replace except the entire engine I guess. This shut down issue happens only in warm weather. In the winter it never shuts down. I have been telling various people over the past 8 years and there seems to be no cure for this at all.

Hey. •DO watch this quick video, you're describing the same thing I've had, and after replacing and testing everything. The reason this happen when it's hot vs cold is the wires become more pliable when hot which allows them to both Relax and wiggle easier as well as Expand ( very slightly) in length. So any wire with compromised insulation will move more freely under the engine vibration and contact nearby metal parts and short out. My issue turned out to be shorted wiring The easiet way to find a short like this the "Wiggle Test"... Start the engine, then systematically start wiggling wires looking for one that will kill the engine. *Also, note that a wire can short thru a micro-crack in the wiring insulation that's not visible to the naked eye. So if the wiggle test kills your engine but you don't see exposed wire, seal everything I'm plasti-dip or liquid tape anyway.

@@saltyfox7056 Problem wasn't the Jeep. It was the owner not taking it to another shop or asking a person who actually works on them. For one, no Jeep that has a ECU or BCM uses a carburetor. As for wiring, most of them are kept in a wiring loom to keep them safe or are wrapped. Not to mention their kept on posts so they shouldn't touch any hot part that could melt and cause a short. I most folks don't do diagnostics or much own a torque wrench for example and want a cheap fix so stop being salty as your going to have an issue with any vehicle regardless. Event Tesla's need service. 😜🤪
