You can also hit the differential cover with rubber mallet if you're afraid of causing damage with screwdriver.

Think the manual recommends 80w-90 for most applications or 75w-140 for towing or heavy duty use.

Awesome Job! I have have a low mileage LJ and need to do this eventually…why didn’t you just order the felpro rubber differential gasket instead of the permatex? Is there an advantage/disadvantage? Thanks again and happy new year!
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia Жыл бұрын
You're correct, I probably should have gotten the Felpro (excellent gaskets). Maybe the only reason to use permatex is price. If you are changing this often for some reason, then permatex is cheaper (but messier). If it is a "one and done" then, the gasket is probably a great alternative.

Nice job. Quick question. After you have cleaned out the differential it self and the brake cleaner and remaining oil from the differential drip out, can you still recycle the fluid? Just getting started and want to start off on the right foot. Thanks
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia Жыл бұрын
I typically dispose of it with other hazardous fluids. I have local place that takes those. Once they are all combined like that, I am not sure if they can really recycle it or not.

What type of paint do you recommend for painting the diff cover once I remove it. Just regular ol spray paint? Thanks.
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Any automotive paint will work or you could just use Rustoleum. Make sure the cover is super clean and degreased so the paint will adhere (I use acetone, but be careful around seals with acetone). Use a good primer and you will be good to go.

Can this also work for the rear diff?
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the process is essentially the same.
@jacklambert1169

Be sure to use a friction modifier if your rear differential has limited slip.

You left out the magnetic drain plug and if there where any metal chunks on it
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia Жыл бұрын
Valid. That should be checked as well. However, if you do have any substantial metal particles in that drain plug, you have bigger problems than just needing to drain and refill the diff.

How does one check the fluid level without losing half of the liquid?
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia Жыл бұрын
Valid question. "Technically" the vehicle has to be on a perfectly level surface (with stock spec suspension). It needs to sit for a while (so everything drains down). Then undo the plug. If any come out, "technically" you don't need it because the "fill level" is below the level of the plug. Note: 99.9 infinity amount of the time, the differential is over filled and will make a mess when you do this...which is why you just pull the entire thing and refill it to the proper level. It helps to wear your cleanest white dress shirt while doing this, just to add to the fun. Hope this helps.

@HNXMedia so if it's overfilled and drains out, would it be safe to put the plug back in since you drained out the excess? Or would I have to pop the cover off and have to refill it

@@HNXMedia Are you towing a lot? Or have a towing package? I have a trailer hitch on my TJ but I've never towed anything and don't intend to. What oil weight do you recommend?
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia 2 жыл бұрын
@@NishantGogna I have towed all kinds of things with this Jeep. I have an aftermarket tow package / hitch and I have maxed it out quite a few times. I routinely pull a trailer loaded with farm equipment, mowers, generators, wood etc pushing 3000lbs at highway speeds (it takes 3 hours to get to my farm/property). The most I have ever towed with this Jeep was when a neighbor was broke down and had to be towed 5 blocks to his house. I used tow straps and pulled his full size Suburban, which was hooked up to a trailer loaded with landscaping supplies. I towed the entire things (very slowly) for those 5 blocks with no problem. A Jeep is far stronger than people think (especially the old "straight 6" engines like this 2003 has). As far as motor oil goes, I have never used anything other than 10w30 (every season) for the life of this Jeep and it has over 205000 miles on it. I do, however, replace 1 quart of the 10w30 with an entire bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil with each oil change (I also put a couple ounces of MMO in the gas tank with each fill up). It's worked for me for 18 years of owning this Jeep.
