Good video, just a couple extra points from someone who's done this a few times. It's always good to take out the fill cap first to ensure it's not jammed or stripped, because if you drain your diff, and then can't fill it, that's a bit of a nightmare. Also, based on the colour of your fluid coming out, I'd say your seal was either leaking before the change, or more than likely you've got an axle seal leak. Fluid should be clearish with small "sparkles" in it, when it's this chocolate milkshake colour it usually means you've got a leak somewhere.

Also, if you do a lot of off-roading you could be getting some water in through the breather when driving through deep water. Might want to consider extending your breathers if that is the case.

Ryan B- I watched the video to make sure there wasn't anything wonky going on with a fluid swap and I read your comment. I thought "Huh- that's smart." The front went quick and easy. The back? The fill plug will NOT come out. I even put a breaker bar on it and it still wouldn't budge. If I'd have just removed the drain plug, I'd be dead in the water. As it stands, I'm driving to Reilly's in my Wrangler to pick up red RTV and brake cleaner in the morning and I'll do the rear Differential then the transfer case/tranny afterwards while the RTV sets. Thanks brother!

im slowly learning how do things myself cause autoshops chsrge a lot. Was gonna get charged 400 for this. And brake fluid etc. I not only want to save money but also gain the knowledge of my vehicle so when im off roading i have a better understanding of it and can fix things without relying on going to a ship everytime. Now sometimes it is necessary cause I dont have the tools or knowledge they have. So I loved this video and all the comments. Learned a ton and if it takes me awhile so be at. I want to learn. Took my 10 hours flr my bumper, battery, winch. Skid plate and lights. But hey I got it done and learned new things. Love the jeep and off road community. :)

You should add that you need to just hand tighten the bolts and allow the gasket maker to harden for an hour, then tighten the bolts to spec. I did my truck the same way you did and I keep getting a leak. Even the package that the gasket maker comes in says to hand tighten for X amount of time then tighten bolt to the recommended torque!

You must change your diff oil often. The old gasket was still new. While scraping the old gasket cover the gears with news paper so nothing falls inside. The oil is really thick and hard to squeeze out. Almost impossible if it's cold. I recommend sitting your oil inside overnight if it's cold out. If it's summer let it sit in the sun for a hour. It's to thick sitting in the store with temperature control A/C. Regular driving, change it every 3-5 years.I go off roading and work those gears hard, I change mine every spring. Before recycling my old oil I like to use it to bring life back into my hand tools like crescent wrenches and channel locks. I use a flat shovel in the winter so I rub it on my shovel so come winter time snow doesn't stick to it. I also use it on the hinges of my shed doors. I heard you can pour it around your foundation to prevent termites. Keep in mind, diff oil stinks bad.

Wouldn't lazy way to do it be through the drain plug? JK diffs have a drain hole on the bottom. Remove the plug and drain oil. Put the plug back in. Remove the upper filler plug and pour petrol. Close the plug and rotate wheels for couple minutes. remove both plugs and drain everything. Leave both plugs removed to let everything dry, or also put pressurized air through for several minutes. Put the lower plug and fill up. Put the upper plug back on and call it a day.

I wouldn't recommend brake cleaner inside the diff. There is no way you can get it all out of there. Now you have fresh oil and brake cleaner inside the diff. That reaidual brake cleaner is just destroying that new oil.
@daisy8luke
@daisy8luke 6 жыл бұрын
Brake cleaner is an organic compound designed to dissolve other organic compounds similar to it. Organic compounds simply dissolve other organic compounds in to solution without changing their properties like, say, acids do. So breaking down the gear oil is not an issue, especially if you also take care to wipe as much of the brake cleaner out of the diff before adding the new gear oil. Also, the tiny amount of brake cleaner compared to the large volume of gear oil makes this a non-issue.
@KarasCyborg
@KarasCyborg 6 жыл бұрын
I was wondering this myself. Would seem like a good idea. Some say that it might prevent the oil from bonding to the gears inside -- which is really what you want to happen for proper cooling and less wear and tear. I am not an expert on it.

Brake parts cleaner is a solvent, so more than likely, whatever little amount of it, not picked up by the cleaning rags, would have evaporated by the time he finished making the gasket and installing the cover back up. If you really want to make sure you got it all, you can blow air with a compressor before closing it back up.

While it is true that you can DRAIN the fluid by removing the plug, you can't get out all the junk and gunk without taking the cover off. And removing the cover and replacing the seal is no big deal and doesn't cost much at all. If you want to do it right, do it this young man's way. Otherwise, you're leaving a bunch of crap inside the differential to mix with your nice clean oil. But, hey, if that's your standard, more power to you.

At the beginning of the video, he pointed out the drain and fill plugs and clearly stated that it could be done using them, but that he wanted to show how to do it by taking the cover off. I personally would take the cover off and do a thorough inspection and cleaning of the area.

@@PhatJeepsvideos Brake clean will take all the oil off the bearings and it will run dry for 1/4 mile or so.

It is foolish to spray a solvent into an oiled assembly. The detergents in the oil will keep the parts clean if you change the oil often enough. Brake cleaner will only break down the oils ability to lubricate!!!!
