This is the video where I give up the secret to keeping the undercarriages on my vehicles looking pretty nice and I install a set of MetalCloak Overline Rocker Rail Guards on the Autoedit Jeep Wrangler JKU Rubicon!
If you just want to see chassis detail skip to 10:22 but check out how fun it is to install rocker rails on your Jeep... I appreciate the support!
Here's where to find the cleaning products and some of the Tool box buddy
www.amazon.com/shop/autoedits...
Next week, I'm running the Rubicon trail and was doing my normal pre trail run preparations and decided to order the MetalCloak Overline Rocker Rails to match the fenders I put on almost two years ago!
The install is fairly easy and these are the highest clearance and toughest rocker guards MetalCloak makes. I was torn between these and the Overland rocker guards because those have this awesome flip step that makes getting in and out easier but I opted for the more simple and tough option.
Here's a link:

Great video to augment the Metalcloak instructions. One strong suggestion: you will need to install at least 4 threaded inserts, possibly many more depending on your vehicle configuration. The supplied “tool” is pretty sketchy and prone to causing errors that are difficult to fix. If you use manual strength to install as shown, you will wind up pretty sore. If you use power tools, the inserts will strip. Save all that hassle and use a proper insert tool like this one from Amazon - Astro Pneumatic Tool 1442 13" Hand Rivet Nut Setter Kit, that’s about $50. You’ll also need a properly sized mandrel for the 3/8” threaded inserts, also available from Amazon for $15. There are others that are cheaper, but regardless of which one you use, the inserts will be properly seated without stripping. The tool will pay for itself, especially if you are also installing the rear fenders, where there’s dozens more inserts to install. Also, a step drill is far superior to standard drill bits for drilling through the sheet metal without binding or tearing and leaves a much smoother finished hole without a burr. It’s much faster too. After center punching, I drilled a 1/8” pilot with a standard bit and then went to the step drill for the 3/8 holes and 1/2” for the threaded inserts. I then chased the 3/8” holes with a standard 3/8” bit for bolt clearance and for the insert holes, finished them with the 17/32” bit that Metalcloak offers. After trying the bit sequence for gradual size increase with standard bits and still having the bit bind and tear the sheet metal, I tried the step drill combination described and didn’t look back. The install of all 4 fenders and rails required more than 50 holes to be drilled and the step drill method was the fast and left a perfect hole that didn’t require additional deburring.

Hey that's great! I never really though of using a WD40 type product for that. In your earlier videos I had just assumed you regularly power washed it and hit it with Rustoleum or similar. And also, because California. I'm in New England, where there are 5 year old cars that look like they came off the Titanic. WAYYYY too late for my cars, but I'm definitely going to do this if/when I get my Rubicon :) I had asked you about black a few weeks back, I ended up passing on that one. Going to hold out for one of the colors I like more.

I just did the Rubicon Trail with my 2015 Rubicon Hard Rock Unlimited with a 3" lift, 35" tires, stock Dana 44 axles, stock Hard Rock rock rails, stock driveshaft, stock skids. Damage? Yes. But mostly my aftermarket rear bumper and skids. Zero damage to the body, tires, driveline or any suspension bits. It was a blast. Coming down Big Sleuce and going up Cadillac Hill was pretty interesting. Only high centered once and had to use my winch.

Were you there??? I just came back from the Jamboree! Made it through, slightly intact.... I thrashed two front right tire sidewalls, demolishing one wheel in the process, and I totally bent my right nerf bar into a V shape... Ha! Had to borrow a really awesome dude's spare tire to drive home since my patched spare wasnt safe for the freeway, but the patch job the mechanics did for my spare was short of a miracle. I got through Cadillac Hill unscathed, minus a jammed up valve stem on another tire. Too bad I missed ya, but I hope you had a great time! I'll be sure to check out these side rails... I'm definitely in the market for some new ones. 😜 Happy Jeeping! 👍👍👍

Great stuff, I have trouble keeping things clean up here in Canada. Also, what I do when I fab up bumpers, after paint i coat them with RockerGuard for a more durable finish that wont chip and rust as fast. Its more resiliant than plain old black gloss paint like Tremclad or Por15 by itself. Its just a really nice textured look... that being said, I'm surprised you haven't coated your steel rockers and fenders with a textured rubberized coating like Rockerguard... although i suppose its way hottter where you are so maybe you dont want a coating like that, might get soft in the summer, iuno.

Keep up the great work Jason. Even here (Portugal) on the other side of the Atlantic ocean you've got fans. ;-) Now, if you allow me: i own a 2019 Wrangler JL (diesel version) and i'm looking to install some good solid rock sliders. I've seen your video and a few others a couple of times and found a guy that said and i quote ".. I really liked those but went with the Patriot sliders from Rock Hard 4x4. Really didn’t like that Metalcloaks bolted to the pinch seam and not the frame. I’ve seen guys bend rock sliders mounted to the pinch seam up into the Jeep and damaging the rocker panels." My question: i don't really care about any other model that person installed, but concerning this specific that you've installed from Metalcloak, what say you? Strengh, resistence, durability, etc... Thanks and again, congrats on a fantastic work.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 4 жыл бұрын
Howdy! Unless you are a competition rock climber... needing to mount your rocker rails to the frame is overkill... plus the body is mounted on dense rubber mounts so there is a bit of flex and I'm not sure how frame mounted sliders accommodate that bit of movement. I have been extremely happy with mine... used a hi-lift jack to lift the entire side of my jeep in the air with them and smashed them on rocks. Strong like bull. Get a set that you like the looks of and have a few good reviews. The MetalCloak sliders I have are extremely well design and tie into both front and rear fender and body armor.

The detailing as simple as it is - looks great, do you follow a similar method for the engine bay ? - I find cleaning the mud and dust from my JKU a time consuming task after every playtime

Yes it does work for engine bay!

Is the Lucas spray lube safe on bushing? I was told WD-40 eats bushing.

Awesome install video. Just a tip. Might want to antiseize those nutsert bolts too. I've had them spin because the bolts would seize inside.

Great suggestion, I did put a bit of oil on those before tightening them down!

autoedit ok. I put a set of genright rocker guards on my LJ and I went to take them off and the some of the bolts were seized and the nutserts would just spin. Very frustrating! Good luck!

You're really good about keeping your Jeep clean. How do you clean behind the MetalCloak Rocker Rail Guards? Do they have to be removed?

Just wipe it with a rag after washing the Jeep.

there is a trick when you go mudding to spray baby oil on the chassy and it keeps mud from sticking think same thing applies when you are spraying the lucas tool box buddy on the chassy.

is it ok to spray WD40 on the front and rear differential and the shocks ? will this do any problem with the differential coating ? is it ok to spray WD40 on a rubber , pipe or Bushings ?

It is a petroleum product so over time it will probably break down rubber but over the decades I've done this... it's been fine.

Amazing products unfortunately we don’t have it where i’m living.. question please: i tried the WD-40 works good but i heard it removes all the grace where it supposed to stay, am i right? And one more thing, does it damage the rubber by long term time? Appreciated! Thanks!

I used wd40 before this on all my dirt bikes and didn't notice any problem on the rubber parts. How would spraying this remove grease from spots that need to be greased? It's fine.

Are you still very happy with your Metalcloak lift kit? Also, how about the six pack shocks? Thinking about getting the 4.5" long arm from Metalcloak

I used to clean up my frame the same way. Then, I realized the oil exposure was fading my frame. It’s all ‘nice’ and grey now, instead of black.
