Jeera Chicken Recipe - Kenyan Style Cumin (Zeera) chicken - Our Restaurant Sell-Out Dish!

In this video, we show you how to make Jeera chicken which used to be a popular sell-out dish in our restaurant. Jeera is also known as cumin or zeera and is the main ingredient in this delicious recipe. It is made with chicken wings and although you can eat it with naan or tandoori roti, we prefer to just endeavor it with our hands! It's really THAT good!
The Jeera Chicken is packed full of flavour and has a tangy spicy sauce that brings this dish to life!
For the Jeera Chicken Recipe, you will need:
1/2 cup oil
4 tbs partially ground Jeera (cumin seeds)
4 tbs partially ground Black Pepper
Blend together:
2 medium tomatoes
3 green chilies
3 tbs yogurt
1 tbs ginger garlic paste
1 tsp coriander
1/2 Kashmiri red chili powder
salt to taste
1 kg chicken wings
Before serving:
1 tsp mint sauce
dried Kasuri Methi
fresh lemon juice
fresh coriander
As you can see, the Jeera Chicken recipe is made using minimal ingredients, however it is super delicious and packed full of flavour!

So I just finished cleaning my kitchen after feeding my family this exact meal..this dish was super easy to make and the results were outstanding! My kids and husband were mainly silent whilst eating because they were too busy lapping up the food..however the only thing that kept getting repeated by them all was “oh man this is delicious” “mommy this is sooo tasty” so thank you for sharing this exquisite family gem!

This was absolutely amazing - I did make adjustments the second time - added another 2 tbsp of jeera because we love the jeera taste, it's never overpowering - also possible our jeera batch isn't the freshest and lost some of it's hit. We also added a couple more tomatoes (to create a little more sauce), added more green chilli's and omitted the red chilli powder, and we blitzed in fresh garlic and ginger - made for a very very slightly more peppery taste and the garlic and ginger came through more (always a symptom of using paste - for weekday convenience, paste all the way, but for weekend cooking, fresh stuff does make a difference). This is the beauty of eastern dishes, slight tweaks to adapt texture/taste and also depending on available cooking time. The recipe itself is gold dust, tried quite a few others and they just weren't the same as this even before the small mods, and also not as easy to do (one-pot style). I've also made it with breast pieces too (marinaded in some salt and fresh lemon beforehand to help keep tender) and that is where this recipe works so well - my partner isn't a fan of boned chicken but boned is easier to cook with and stays tender - breast is really tricky to get tender (quality of breast also plays a factor). Thanks for the recipe - it's become our staple jeera chicken method!

How long do you leave the Jeera in there before adding in the he paste? Looks like i might of over-Cooked the Jeera. Thanks!

Just a few minutes (2 to 3 minutes - the time it takes to make the paste) until the jeera releases its aroma. I hope this helps. :)

Also, assuming you meant to say cook the chicken for 30-40 mins on low heat right once bubbling (thought i heard you say 10 mins but the text says otherwise). Big thanks!

@@imran.familykitchen I wouldn't call this Kenyan food, seems more South Asian. Zeera/Jeera Chicken is a common dish served on menus in India.

I made these jeera chicken wings, Don Imran’s restaurant style. It looked exactly like yours and tasted very good too. Everyone in my family enjoyed so much. The only thing i used little less was that black pepper powder as I mentioned earlier. Next time i will try to cook with exactly how much you recommend and see if it tastes very hot or not.

Ahh that is absolutely wonderful to hear that you made the recipe and your family enjoyed it too! It makes my family and I so so happy to hear that! Please do try it with the extra black pepper as it isn't as hot as you might think and it really does elevate the flavour! It is definitely one of the top three dishes in our household and up until this video it was a closely guarded secret recipe too. @@imran.familykitchen Hi Imran, fantastic recipe. Didn't quite replicate the fantastic taste that I experienced when your Dad cooked it many years ago! Had to use chilli power instead of Kashmiri and crushed fenugreek seeds instead of kasuri methi. Anyway, sure I'll nail it sometime soon. Many thanks for all your fantastic recipes over the last few weeks. Good work 🙏🧘‍♂️👍

@@darenkitching1156 Hey Daren, ahh that's great that you made the Jeera Chicken. It's one of those dishes that you never forget the taste even if you had it many years ago! It's ok to substitute chili powder instead of Kashmiri chili, the later is not as hot as chili powder and gives a deeper colour, so it's best to add according to how hot you'd like it. We wouldn't substitute crushed fenugreek seeds for the kasuri methi though as that would give a completely different flavour (even though they are the same plant). Instead, we would just omit the methi if you don't have any. I'm sure you'll get there next time you try! Thanks so much for your support, encouragement and kind words! 🙏

Yesterday I cooked Jeera Chicken according to your recipe. It turned out so well that everyone liked it and want to repeat next week. I made it with chicken thighs and legs. Will I get the same taste and results if I use chicken breast ? (to be a little more health conscious) Thanks!
