How she performs in high wind is the tell tale detail. Call she fly her sails and move without heeling over?? Does she have to sail close hauled just to move ??

A keeling design that is deeper in the stem relative to the stern gives power to the sails . The keeling line has more resistance ahead of the travelers at each mast and the wind force is transferred to the boat before the boat heels. The stem should be the deepest point of the boat by hull or blade than the rest of the boat.

@@markcampbell7577 When you are that big you are very often close hauled because the apparent wind is always going to be important. Unfortunately unless you have extremely efficient hull and rig, your speed will always look slow compared to the size. Unless it blows really.

That's sailing for you. Going slowly where you do not want to go with uncertain timing. I am sure if Jeff wants to travel fast and on time he will take one of his cars, jets or rockets.

​@@williambakker745 Ever been on a boat? 8 knots might be slow but it feels like 100 mph, with thw waves and the wind. Slow is the last word I would use. Plus by the time a motoryacht runs out of diesel you only just got going. Motor boats have to travel slowly to be efficient. They CAN do 20 knots but it burns fuel like crazy. Better to go 10 knots and not run out of fuel after 100 miles. A sailboat like that can probably do 15 knots. That's fast. That's 3 knots short of what most tankers and container ships do (18 knots). Titanic was considered very fast at 21 knots service speed. Of course she could do 23 but she never got the chance to light the single ended boilers needed for going above the service speed. Cruise ships too, they do like 16-18 knots. Speedboats yes. They go like 50 knots. But not very far or very long. Not crossing the Atlantic in a speedboat without a tanker waiting every 100 miles.

I doubt if Bezos will spend any time aboard at all under those conditions, so it probably doesn’t matter.

Engineering wise, surprised hey haven't made rollers that keep main cabin flat. You could lock it once level. The keel, sails, outer structure would keel.

As a self-made businessman who started from scratch and eventually provided dozens of well-paid jobs which sustained kids at school and college, please do not think I am anti-wealth or would deny their toys to those who work hard. The engine would have to stay on to supply electricity, so why not slip it into gear. There is a following support ship too because a sailboat cannot have a helipad. This typifies the new green movement. All flash.

​@@barryonthefly doesn't need to have propulsion engines on but, generators going. I use the generator at anchor primarily but, will turn it on if the temperature drops in the freezers while underway. It's nice when nothing is on, quite peaceful sailing.

​@@cindyreid6404 Well that thing uses a bit more juice than your 32 foot sloop? Could be diesel electric. Generator just runs at the required load and the engines are electric. Reliable, powerful, cheap to maintain... that's how I would do it if I had Jeff money. Probably giant bank of lithium ion batteries so it can turn off the gen at night and Jeffy doesn't need to hear a very slight humming in the background. I mean the poor guy. Must be exhausted. If anyone deserves sleep it's him. Not us minimum wage peasants. We are not worthy to scrub the barnacles of that hull. If she sails close to you, you are expected to open all seacocks and perform a courtesy scuttle.

Close to wind speed probably on a beam reach. My guess is that 15 knots is very easy on a windy reach. The old Schooners where doing 15 in the proper conditions.

It’s not an ego thing in my opinion. Bezos is kind of a private life guy. He doesn’t do many or any interviews and not many public sightings. I think it’s just, I got the money and I’m gonna build me a big boat and get out of the U..S which is collapsing as we speak.

I would have faked it with an occre yellow sheer line. You can give the stripe a bigger sheer than the hull has, exagersting the effect. Used to be done lots back in the day, so you saw sheer lines on lots of boats (Titanic, Mauretania, Aquitania etc... even old saling yachts like HMY Royal Caroline). Back then it was universally considered beautiful tmfor a ship to have a sheer or at least a slight one exagerrated by a sheer line, usually in a bright colour on a dark hull, yellow or gold for the fancy. And often the puter bulwarks painted white with the transition between white and dark also having more of a curve than the hull and that's where the sheer line usually was separating light and dark. Later it became fashionable to have it lower, the sheer line on RMS Olympic was moved down a row or two of a hull plates. Looks kinda cool, you see it in pictures of her later career in the 30s.

But he has a 175’ support yacht that carries a helicopter and a bunch of small boats and water toys. I’ll give him credit for building a sailing yacht but he doesn’t deserve any type of award for being an environmentalist.

There's definitely a few large diesel generators providing power for electricity. Didn't see any solar panels. Gotta heat the water, cook, electric sails.
